I'm doing a no-buy year this year. I am a shopping addict and I have a lot of credit card debt, so I originally set out to do a no-buy to save money to pay my debts, but it turned into a great way for me to realize what my environmental impact is! I realized that constantly buying new things doesn't align with my values of wanting to be more sustainable. I'm so glad I found your channel, I love your videos and your approach to sustainable living.

I recently read about the concept of a "depth year" in which you dedicate time to the things you already love do to, as opposed to taking on more tasks, projects, or hobbies. This sounded like the perfect way for me to get back into aspects of a sustainable life that I have been neglecting since my attention was elsewhere. So, that will be my goal for 2024. My word for 2024 will be "reconnection". I loved the video and your ideas! Also, your home is so beautiful with all the greenery!

One thing I’ve learned about myself, is that I do better breaking up my year into seasons, and setting seasonal goals. So my winter goal this year is to not let the cold keep me inside! I live in a cold province in Canada, and I usually give up walking to the store because it’s not nice out. I know if I bundle up in my winter clothes that I already own, I can walk to get groceries. In the spring it’s common to have organized community cleanups, so that will be my “spring goal”, to participate in some, and this year I’d like to organize one! I’m shy, so being a leader doesn’t always come naturally to me, but over the past year I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone more, and this year my word of the year is Confidence

My husband and I keep a notebook where we set intentions for the year and reflect on past years. We revisit them a few times a year to see how we’re doing. Some are measurable things like one creative date night in per month, or build a new composter. Some are less tangible and more like renewing commitments to the type of lifestyle we want to build.

My word is consistency and mastery. I have hit point in my life where I’ve discovered many things about myself. However, I keep trying to discover new things instead of mastering the things I have discovered. And putting time and energy into those things. Self discovery is important, but I believe leaning into the things that you find is equally as important. My New Year’s resolutions include: *Have a meal with a friend or family member once a week * Make a temperature blanket * read 35 books * master my recipe repertoire instead of always hunting for the new fix * Do a 30 day yoga challenge * schedule doing things I enjoy once a month

My personal goal for the year is to be more empathetic. I worked really hard the past couple years to build strong boundaries to cut off toxic family members. Now that I'm a part of a group of respectful and welcoming family and friends I'd like to mellow out again and be more empathetic. In my house I worked very hard to remove plastic cutlery, disposable plates, and plastic water bottles from everyday usage. We also do at least 1 vegetarian meal every week! 👩🏻🎨 creating >>> consuming. Whether it’s physical objects, media, projects, community. We evolved to apply ourselves! And from everything I’ve ever read and experienced, applying oneself in a sustainable way seems to be what leads to true happiness
@the_Pons Жыл бұрын
Ok, two points. 1: creating can lead to over consumption too. Most crafters and hobbyists I know buy and collect a lot of supplies and materials, of varying degree sustainably sourced. Often the overconsumption mindset doesn't go away, just shifts focus to a more "sustainable" consumption. Not saying that's how you will go about creating, just suggesting putting it out there as a caveat when discussing creating over consumption. 2: While composting is good, it serves it's purpose best when coupled with careful mealplanning to minimize the amount of food one buys but does not get around to using before it goes off. I know you do this Shelbi and have talked about it before. But it's worth reiterating, especially if there are people new to your channel watching this video. Keep up the good work! 😁👍🤗
@ckdraws41010 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right about the crafting overconsumption. I don’t know how many empty sketchbook pages and rarely used or even unused art supplies I have. And ethical art supplies? I don’t even know how to find information on the sourcing of pigments. You can search up “sustainable (insert art supply)” and the only things that pop up are tutorials of how to make it yourself (will not be the same high quality as buying for many supplies and may require buying pigment - again the problem of figuring out how it was sourced) or the same purchase links that pop up when you just search up the art supply without worrying about sustainability at all. From this point on, I’m going to try to use up all the art supplies that I have before purchasing any more. Or at least think carefully about whether I really need something before I buy it. I can also ask to borrow things from my friends, like white gel pens and white gauche for highlights. It could be interesting if I run out of some colors and have to work within certain color palettes as time goes on. I think the hardest part might be getting my family to stop buying me art supplies for my birthday and Christmas. A big reason my collection has grown so much in the first place is their gifts, but maybe I can shift them to donating to charities in my name instead. They’re really good about making sure a charity is a good, effective, fiscally responsible one before donating

The date was chosen partly in honor of Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and the month's namesake. My theme ideas for this next year are action and creation. I panic tried a bunch of crafts right before Christmas hoping to give my relatives homemade gifts. It helped me realize that we have an obscene amount of craft supplies and tools (I tried crochet, beaded bracelets, resin art, and mini snow globes and didn't buy a thing). @sarasynfox Жыл бұрын
I find it interesting that a number of the things you're listing are things I already do! Feels like I can give myself a pat on the back for a few of these things because that means I'm on the right track for a lot of these things. I've always told myself if I want something, not a need, just a want, I have to visit it three times on three different days. If I still want it, and it's still there, it's meant to be. If it's sold, or if I just don't want it anymore, well, clearly I didn't want it that bad. Years ago I learned to knit and sew. Everyone told me knitting and sewing was way more expensive than buying, but my argument was the cost is paying for not only a higher quality item, but also something that took a lot of time to make, meaning I've gotten hours of entertainment out of simply making that item, so that's hours of time I'm not spending money on other entertainments. The way I look at it, if I broke down the cost of whatever went into the making into the amount of use it got, between the time spent in making, and all the time using it, the cost works out to be incredibly valuable. It's why I invest my time into crafting, because it's much more sustainable, improves my mental health, and results in stuff that are much better quality and personalized than I can buy. Every time I use the item I made, it's filled with all those memories, adding even more value. It's such a good new habit to build!

And like you said, it helps you think snot what’s important to you and hope you want to spend your time

I don’t do New Year’s resolutions but one of my goals this year are to minimize my personal belongings and to sell or give to family anything that I do not need/ want. So far I have sold a couple of dish sets and furniture pieces that I no longer needed on Facebook marketplace and am hoping to add smaller items to other sites like Mercari, postmark and eBay. In the past my instinct was always to donate but the more I learn the more I feel like selling, regardless of how long it takes, is the best option because it guarantees the item gets a second life with someone else. I’m also renovating my room to make it a more peaceful environment and working on some diy home projects. I also will be starting a full time job in feb. previously I was working as a freelancer for the company and with switching from freelance to full time I have a smaller paycheck so I’m also trying to be more mindful of my spending so that my savings do not change even with a reduced income.

That was the kickstart I needed to pull out my creative arsenal of fiber arts and to start learning new skills. I highly suggest people look up hand sewing, sashiko and darning. You don't need a sewing machine or a massive array of tools for clothing repair. You can get the bare basics of what you need for a small amount at any store. I am now armed with the knowledge of how to repair any type of clothing. Also started working on making my own so that I will have well made that will last me for years.

I love setting intentions. I try to start early so I can figure out the logistics or form the habit by the time the new year rolls around. Definitely consumption focused this year. The last half of 2023 I was using up non CF items and replacing with CF so that continues. Who knew that even tampons weren’t CF?! Gross! And I’m doing an in and out list each month to see what things I’m accumulating. Not food (yet) but other stuff- beauty, clothes, etc. It keeps me mindful of my waste. And I no longer buy backups for anything, even things I know I will replace. That way I have to actually think whether I still want to use the thing. It’s not a perfect system, but these things get a little better and easier when I’m consistently thinking about them.

One of my personal resolutions this year regarding climate and the environment is taking care of my neighborhood, there's areas that are really neglected and polluted and so this year i wanna clean them up,i have done it countless times before but the last time i did it was in 2021 so it's time to get back at it,i plan on cleaning up the area close to my house this feburary after my mock exam beacuse it's winter and all the greenery has died so i can get ny hands in there properly lmao, it's an area full of greenery and ingrown trees which really hides the trash and in the summer i plan on cleaning another area wich I've never cleaned in wich I've made the vast majority of my precious childhood memories, it's a place really important to me but it is so incredibly horrendous rn, it doesn't have that much greenery like the other one so it's gonna be easy to clean it up in the summer (not really doe 'cause there's a lot of trash) but yeah and the other in regards of community is to support local thrift shops and shop sustainably and to form a stronger bond with my community in the city in general and not just my neighborhood and join some charities and volunteer work, hopefully it's gonna be a successful year and we're gonna make it out alive 🧘🏽♀️👍🏼 LET'S GET IT EVERYONE 👹

Thank you for the role you play in making our household more mindful and sustainable. I give you a lot of credit for the changes we've made (e-biking to work instead of driving, switching to our local credit union, making lots of use of our "zero waste kitchen" cookbook and composting whatever (much less) food waste we have). This is a super helpful video for knowing where to focus our time and energy, to make the biggest sustainability "bang for our buck".

I don't do resolution per se, but I create a "could do" list in the week between Christmas and New Year's. Really takes the pressure off. Plus, it's fun to look back in like, August, and remember "oh yeah, I kind of wanted to do this thing" and do it because now I feel like it.

something i’ve been wanting to do for forever but now taking the leap is homesteading. i’m focusing more on making my food from scratch and being able to share that with my family

I like new year resolutions and my word for next year is gentle (or gentleness it’s about being gentle with myself. Resolutions are good and can be done seasonally and throughout the year too I also worked on community in the last two years joining a sangha (meditation community) volunteering and joining and then starting my own book club 📚

I agree I think that this time of year is for reflecting on last year and looking at what our goals should be for the upcoming year. My new year’s goals surround habit changes. Things like daily exercise, journaling, saving money, being more sustainable and finding community. Making my vision board on New Year’s Eve with my hubs.

I have had so much fun thrifting old dishes for mosaics and making those garden plate flowers! and also hoarding all my sauce jars, and painting the lids, and using little knobs on the top/ decopauging them for spices and whatnot.i’m selling some of the plate flowers and using them to get more plant seeds! Its also helped me get to know my neighbors because they stop and comment on my little upcycled garden things

Very admirable goals! My local library collects food scraps for a community based kitchen in town! I am not creative in the kitchen either! I do bring my scraps to the library and I intend to continue to support that effort! I do support my local by nothing page on social media! I surrendered my car about 5 years ago! I live in a small city so I am so grateful that I can walk everywhere! I honestly appreciate you because I don’t know anyone else that thinks of these strategies to support the earth as you do! Much love to you from across the miles in CT ❤

My new years resolution is to be more mindful of the foods i am consuming, their origins and how they were grown. Gonna be gardening, canning, bread making, a lot more this year!

I never do them and hate them, but still every year I'm making sure I'm little more sustainable, I guess that's just so stuck in my head I don't event think about them in that way haha, happy new year, you have been my main inspiration on my sustainable journey since 2016!!

I dont know how to explain it, Shelby, but you are glowing?? you look and feel vibrant in your videos and I just love it! I got some amazon gift cards for Christmas and because of your videos I decided to buy sustainable, quality items (such as doc marten boots because I do not own any weather appropriate boots and I always regret that when winter comes). thank you for the inspiration to do better!

My Birthday is in January too, so I do have that frame of mind for exploring what’s worked well and to expand, and the time to consider what new things might be fun to check out! I do agree with your vibe about creativity! I do think it’s good for mental health as well!

I love my buy nothing group! My mom was able to get a really nice dining table for me and my daughter when we first moved out this year. I also have gotten other furniture and clothes for myself and my daughter. I've given my group books and clothes and toys that my daughter no longer uses. I will definitely implement these habits. The only one I cant do is cut back on driving. I live about 20 miles from work and then after work i pick up my daughter from my moms house who lives 30 miles from my job 🙃

I love that your giving creating and making things a go. I know it's not always been your fav thing to do but it is exactly what you mentioned we need to create things and do things with our hands for our own wellbeing and sense of self. It makes us feel good

I set goals at the start of the year that involve every aspect of my life like my friends and family to work and personal growth and finances while also focusing on my body and mind not in a “get abs” but a keep my body healthy. I then also review it 6 months it so i can see whether I’m on track and if the goals are actually reflecting me anymore or not

This is such a great video! So much good info! I was active in my buy nothing group and loved it and then was removed and blocked for no reason with no explanation. I never broke a rule, I helped so many people, I made new friends etc, I'm still shocked and hurt by it.

I'm def trying to do a low buy year. I'm not going hard core like "I can only buy another moisturizer when I have used the last drop of my last one" but I'm trying to be more conscious about what I'm bringing in my home and trying to ASK before I buy--meaning ask my siblings and other family members if they have something they don't like that I could have, or asking someone like my grandma for yarn before I purchase (and that's a good gift for my friends, too!). I'm hoping that when I get the urge to buy, I can "shop" via my grandma and the library lol. I'm going to keep a big list of those items I have an excessive amount of and what I have used for the motivation to keep going and not repurchase, too. I'm hoping I can pull it off! But I have also lived through too many natural disasters that not having backups of items is really anxiety inducing :( I will do my best!

I love making lists of things, so I make lists every time I feel the urge to buy a bunch of things. And if it's not a necessity, I try to wait until something shows in my lists multiple times over several weeks/months before purchasing. And also trying to research the best option of the item I want, often that lengthens the time before purchasing and sometimes I end up not even finding anything I really like so it goes to the back of my mind

Thanks for always give me something to think about! Being rural my intentions for the year look a bit different. I’m focusing on community building with the hope of building resilience. In my mind a prepared community is always more sustainable than one that is always reacting to a crisis. Also streamlining my homemaking activities to reduce inputs, always trying to grow more of my food, and cooking from scratch. Happy new year!

My top goal for the year is to get a good job 😩 it's been a few months now of applying with no responses so it's really starting to get stressful. I also want to read more books in 2024, explore my community more and try to find some fellow sustainability-minded people (maybe even vegans?!) now that I've moved to a bigger city (compared to the small conservative city I was in before). I live near a beautiful river now and I'd love to get involved in trash clean-ups as well 💚 so many things I could improve on honestly, but my current situation is really stressing me out.

My new year resolution is going to be GROW Grow in my job, grow in personal relationships,, grow intellectual, grow in my community. My restart is not usually the new year but during lent, and Christmas season. Lent, to me is the best since it’s paired with integrity. I can’t break a promise to God so easily as with myself.

I would like my kids and I to go hiking more next year and go camping at least a couple times next year. I also want to declutter my house, it got much worse this year, not better. I’m trying to remind myself that last year: -I bought considerably less snacks and ate more vegetables -I started biking, walking and taking the bus so I barely used my car -I survived So that I don’t focus on all the stuff I didn’t do: exercising, hiking, camping & decluttering
