What is a "Xenopixel" Neopixel Lightsaber? Comparing Features and Prices

I just joined the custom saber community after years of only buying hasbro and master replica and disney sabers, I absolutely love my xeno pixel sabers. I have obi wan a new hope, obi wan ROTS, and Cal kestis's and Im blown away with the quality. The sabers are excellent display pieces being so much more accurateto the movies and I love all the functions of the neopixel blade. Considering the black series elite lightsabers are over $300 after shipping and tax you might aswell get a xeno/proffie saber!

@@FindingTheForce yeah I agree, I love them since they're more "on brand" but the lack of smooth swing, poor LED quality, thick necks and thick sabers, etc is hurting them too much. Not to mention the new obi wan black series elite saber is going for 278.99, and dont get me wrong I plan on getting it, but jeez for that price its almost highway robbery.

I am glad that Hasbro is trying, but they definitely need to switch to Neopixel. They should use the Proffieboard or Xeno V2, but I believe that the Xenopixel board is only used by certain companies.

I hear so many people saying that xenopixel is like the dollar tree version of neopixel/proffie but as someone who probably wont change anything because it already comes with so much, it seems like xenopixel is the way to go. maybe my opinion will change later if I get super into it but for now at least I'm looking forward to my xenopixel

Hey Richard, I think you are totally correct. The other boards have so many more features that most people don’t really take advantage of. Most of us just want to plug and play! Not to mention that it is so much easier to add and remove, sound fonts!

I now have 4 xenopixel lightsabers and I love them. I am in the UK and buy mine from Padawan Outpost who are awesome to buy from. I have never waited more than 5 days for a saber to be delivered and usually they are 1-2 days. I use them mostly for costuming and they are perfect for that as they are reasonable looking replicas which take take some knocks and bangs without getting too damaged or costing the earth to replace. The Xenopixel sound board is updatable, and DarkWolf/LGT/DamienSaber are releasing updates on a regular basis so that the capabilities of the board are always being expanded and improved upon. They are not as customisable as a Proffie/CFX/GH v3 for sure but they are customisable to a very large degree and the level of customisability is being improved all the time via the firmware updates. I believe Proffie V6 software now give access to change some things on the saber itself but from what I have seen it can still be a complicated process to get to where you want to be with a blade style etc... I think the more limited choices on the Xenopixel are actually an advantage as they make it much easier to navigate and configure it. Lastly KSith my favourite sound font creator now includes a Xenopixel specific version of most of their sound fonts when you down load them and will be providing the same with all new fonts. This means that with these fonts at least you no longer have to rename sound files from other formats. You can now just add KSith fonts straight onto your Xenopixel SD card. Perfect!!!

@@FindingTheForce Here in the UK you are legally able to make a warranty claim up to 6 years after purchase, however after 6 months, the onus is on you to demonstrate that the product has failed prematurely. So here a 14 day warranty would be illegal. You have 6 months to return goods for repair or replacement with no questions asked if they are faulty, and if you can prove the item is faulty and not just worn out from normal use you can return it for replacement or repair for up to 6 years.

Im sure someone mentioned it already but proffie OS 6.X you can edit most everything on the fly with "Edit Mode" feature. Its far superior IMO but much more expensive.

​@@FindingTheForcenah, seems like you have some upgrading to do to any of your proffieboard sabers, being that this feature has been available since Proffie OS 6.X as commenter said, and we are now at Proffie OS 7.X which is even better. You can edit certain things without hooking up to computer, but now there is Proffieboard Workbench/workshop which is just an editor for proffie boards. No code writing/editing through Arduino anymore. I highly suggest looking into it!

Great video as always. I have serval xenopixels as they are great for the money. I just have to add that the current proffie update added an edit mode that allows you to change just about everything from the lightsaber with no pc needed after the initial set up with a pc.

@@ethanogorman6198 I don't know that much about Asteria boards. I've read on serval reddit posts about how they are good for the money but that proffie and cfx are still better boards. I my opion if you can get over the learning curve then go proffie as FETT263 is always working on new updates and features. A good alternative are the xenopixel v2, which are very affordable, gets firmware updates, and allows customization right from the Saber much like cfx does. Which ever you choose I hope you enjoy.

So I have been considering picking up a neopixel luke skywalker saber because I don't want to spend money on disneys version of the saber at galaxies edge because the adapter makes it look so chunky and I prefer the more accurate look to my sabers so I am definitely picking the saber up from this website

I got my very first "serious" lightsaber last week: an Atlas Xenopixel V3 from Imperial Workshop. Lifelong Star Wars fan, and I've been looking at the hobby for months now, and I can honestly vouch that I couldn't have asked for a better start. Sure I could've gone cheaper and gotten an RGB baselit, but I wanted something with some real oomph. I feel like as far as the price-to-value ratio goes, you can't really go wrong. Maybe I'll get a Proffie someday, but those prices are killer and I already feel spoiled rotten by the neopixel tier. Edit: this video is a year old now, and I think the chip shortages have abated a bit, so I'd like to point out that you can get a neopixel lightsaber for under $300 from a few different sites now, Imperial Workshop included. At that price point, and with the help of financing thru PayPal or Shop, it's a very good time to jump in.

For the xeno pixel I believe if Im not wrong that instead of having a slower sound play its the same sound no matter what just sounds quieter, and the faster you swing the louder it sounds. So it sounds great but i dont believe its a separate sound

@@FindingTheForce But the smooth-swing is sub-par, don't you think? The sound it plays is a one-size-fits-all and doesn't differentiate between differences in speed or intensity of movement. For instance, the sound that is played when one is whipping and slashing with fury (like when Luke is wailing on Vader at the end of the duel in Return of the Jedi and slashes off his hand), is the same sound that is played when one gently waves the saber around (like when Luke first handles his father's lightsaber in Obi-Wan's Hutt). It plays the same sound, regardless of how hard or fast you swing it or how slow and gently you maneuver it. The volume does change a bit I think, but it's not the same as a higher end board. I think the sensor the board has is just less sensitive or incapable of distinguishing the difference in movement intensity or speed. To it, movement is movement, all the same. And to me, that is a sub-par smooth-swing. Do you disagree? Is there a setting I am unaware of? If so, please tell me, I would love for me Xeno to differentiate movement. CFX and Proffie accommodate for these differences in intensity and vary the sound accordingly, I think the card's sensor is more able to differentiate speed and intensity of movement. I understand that the Xeno soundcard is half the price, which is great, and I even have one and do enjoy it, but it isn't on the same level as a CFX or Proffie. Also, while I do agree that the Proffie is not user friendly, the CFX is very user friendly and easy to add sounds fonts, colors, songs, etc. without any coding, just drag-and-drop, AND, everything can be edited on the fly! It' say favorite function. It doesn't need to be plugged into a computer, but you do have to have the bluetooth option installed. When one has the bluetooth option they can use an app that gives you amazing control over all audio and visual elements. I believe the name of it is ForceFX and is available on Android and iOS. Or if you don't have bluetooth, you can also just plug the saber into the computer using the normal usb charging port, without having to disassemble it or anything, and change it's setting live. Do you believe Xeno's smooth-swing is comparable to that of the higher-end boards? Is there a way to enhance the control problems I mentioned earlier? I have a Xeno and can't find a way to accommodate for sensitivities like this, so if you have some specific instructions on how to change this, please do share I can appreciate the Xeno and it does have its place in the lightsaber market, I just want to clarify its capabilities in certain things. Thanks you for your work and I am not trying to be a downer, I do still recommend buying a Xeno in some situations. And, very importantly, they are definitely superior to what you will get in any Galaxy or Disney lightsaber!

Hey, penguin, I know it’s complicated and I did my best to explain in the video. You can only add sound fonts, but it’s very easy to add, remove and change the fonts around. Make sure to make a copy of the whole SD card before you start doing that stuff though.

From what I know (about to buy, don't own, but been doing a crap ton of research) there is no big difference other than, with pixel blades, they have LED in them which can get jostled vs RGB which doesn't. Basically you'd just run the risk of messing up the LED's over no risk

Hey bud, that’s a great question. They are extremely strong even though base lit sabers are ideal for dueling. I duel with my neo sabers all the time, I just tell my son, or my friends to go have to force, it’s not about swinging hard but about form and fun.

Great question man. If two grown men we’re going at it, I’m not sure how long they would hold up. But definitely just lightly play fighting with your friends I think they would do fine. The blades are actually pretty thick and strong.

Hey Toast. The answer is no. They do have a Proffie section in their drop down menu under lightsabers. 👍🏻 You could always send your proffie to an installer and have them configure it for you the way you want. That's what we are going to do.

So I bought a xenopixel LGT saber and it was working fine until some button pressing I think. My blade color won’t turn on when ignited on only 2 fonts that worked perfect prior. All the tip drag, blaster deflection, color changing stuff all works too! Just that when the Obi wan font for example comes on, it doesn’t show the blade ignited blue. Has all sound and fx just not the normal ignition color. Any help please?

Xenopixel can do everything a Proffie can when it comes to sounds (as you can install your own) but you can’t program custom lighting apart from the pre-installed variants. That’s why they are cheaper. However, the Xeno’s still have several options already installed for both sound and light, such as blade effects and ignitions

Yeah ArtSabers is cheaper because EVERY SINGLE HILT from the films they sell are embarrassingly inaccurate. If you're wanting, let's say... Anakin's Episode III hilt, you gotta go with the 89 Sabers "Skinnyflex" version. THAT is screen accuracy at its finest. In fact all the Korbanth/89 Sabers hilts are absolutely perfect. ArtSaber's attempts at the Anakin Episode III hilt is laughably bad. All of heir "almost but not quite" character hilts are garbage. Every single one I've seen. Even if you don't care about screen accuracy, or you just want to get a random non-Star Wars character hilt, DON'T... You get what you pay for, and it couldn't be more true with ArtSabers. I managed to get an 89 Sabers "Skinnyflex", for $574 total, shipping from across the entire world included. It came completely preinstalled, two button setup, 32 inch Neopixel blade, Proffie 2.2, (loaded with fonts) a removable chasse with the cleanest sounding, most powerful speaker I've ever heard, (SO F*CKING LOUD) a removable battery, a battery charger/cable, a screen accurate blade plug, a screen accurate pommel, (No sound vents) another screen accurate-looking pommel with sound vents, a tiny hex wrench for the screen accurate blade retention screw, a very impressive clear display stand with a SICK lookin' Anakin Skywalker nameplate / plaque that's attached to the base of the display stand, a VERY SOFT (yet thick and protective) dark grey drawstring bag, with the Jedi Order symbol on the front, and official 89 Sabers logo, etc. on the back. Even the box itself is gorgeous. Very sturdy, and has a dense foam in the bottom half that protects and hugs the hilt via a precision cutout depending on what hilt you get. It doesn't get any better than that, and I'm not even sure if I mentioned everything. If you're gonna get yourself a proper, fancy Neopixel Lightsaber, then get one. Don't spend as little as possible on some shitty ArtSaber hilt. They're much cheaper for a reason. I looked around and got lucky with my Anakin "Skinnyflex". Normally I would've had to spend around a thousand dollars, probably more for everything I got. Do not skimp on Lightsabers, you will be disappointed. I don't have the kind of money to be able to spend almost $600 on a damn Lightsaber. I worked my ass off and saved up for a while to finally get my dream saber. It was worth every penny. Next up is the 89 Sabers Luke ROTJ Hero. It'll be a while until I can afford another saber like that, but just look at photos of 'em, they're absolutely perfect. -
