She said she hadn't yet developed the technique and stamina for 8 shows a week.

Do you have any tips to have a healthy speaking voice? Does it influence your singing in any way?
@elinat24142 жыл бұрын
I’m no expert, but I remember my choir teacher saying that it’s healthy to have the habit of breathing from your diaphragm most of the time, even if you are not singing. That will help keep your vocals healthy. Overall though, obvious things like speaking very loudly, yelling or talking for hours straight can tire out your vocal apparatus and impact your singing voice. However, if you speak at a normal frequency, pitch and volume, it shouldn’t impact your singing.

Below is Sutton Foster speaking about the "Thoroughly Modern Millie" performance you reacted to, which aired on the Rosie O'Donnell Show in 2002. SF is 27 years old: "...You know what’s crazy? We did that [performance] during previews, and honestly my voice was so fried that I couldn’t even get through the sound check of the song. I didn't have the technique or stamina yet for eight-shows-a-week - I was so green and so new. I remember my voice teacher Joan Lader warmed me up on the phone before because I couldn't hit any of the big notes during sound check. I thought, ‘This is going to be a disaster. I’m going to be flat on national television.’ And everyone was there: Steven Unger, my first agent in New York, Rob Ashford, Michael Mayer. But Joan warmed me up over the phone - and she’s the best there is - and she was able to get me there. I look back on it and there was so much fear. That was a big old fingers-crossed, please-dear-God, clenched-ass-to-get-me-through-it moment. It’s amazing people talk about it all the time and I’m like, ‘You have no idea!’..." yooo patti lupone is definitely one of the best, i mean 3 tony wins speaks enough. but her power, especially in her prime, outstanding, jus maybe enunciate more(i mean from a vocal coaches perspective, but tbh, i think it adds more depth, like it’s a signature to her, one of my fav things abt her, can definitely tell when it’s her because of it)

I got to see one of Sutton’s tour performances around 2008 - it was amazing to hear her live! Side story: Someone who was a part of a show I had just done ended up being picked for choosing her “random” song. [ahem…] He picked wrong. 😂 He chose a very commonly performed showtune, but… damn, I no longer recall what the option was that I wanted to hear... “The Story Goes On” from Baby is coming to mind. It was definitely something lesser known like that. There are times when Sutton’s voice is a bit too much for my ears, but there is NO denying her skills. To have a tone like that and pull off everything she can? 🫨 She was definitely a vocal idol for me, but my tone isn’t the same so I had to recognize my limitations. “Gimme Gimme” is probably my Sutton-limit. My favorite was “Monkey on a Pedestal.” I believe I did a portion of that one for a soundcheck. (I got a kick out of doing songs that sounded odd out of context. “Out for Blood” from Carrie got the best reactions.)
