I have such a hard time comparing! I loved Arches’ Devil’s Garden Primitive Loop, Half Dome, Rainier’s Skyline Trail and Angels Landing hikes. There definitely needs to be different categories for all! I would like to do the Narrows from the top down like you. We only got to do a couple miles with the rest of population! Thank you for showing us and all the effort you put into your videos. I’m sure you hike more miles getting in all the views for us.

My hubby and I hiked The Narrows early June last year in the other direction you took - yes, VERY busy! One of our favorite hikes so far in the lower 48 is the Highline Trail to Granite Park Chalet in Glacier National Park (the East side was closed at the time due to COVID). We also loved Peekaboo Loop in Bryce Canyon, the hike and rock scramble to Butch Cassidy's Arch in Capitol Reef, the hikes to Alberta Falls and the lakes beyond and starting at Glacier Gorge Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park, and hiking amonst the red rocks around Sedona, AZ to Devil's Bridge.

I did the top down 36 years ago. Took 2 days. Stayed overnight in the grotto, an alcove about twice the size of the one you filmed. Had deer walk past as we were boiling water for dinner. I found Big Springs amazing. It was the best hike of my life. I also did Angels Landing that same trip. At 64 I am working to get back in shape because there are lots of hikes I have yet to do.

Thank you for this. You and I are of a similar mind when it comes to being alone on a hike, so I am glad to see your experience, but may not try this one myself. My favorites in National Parks have been Upper Muley Twist Canyon in Capitol Reef (lots of arches, great views over 8 miles, and never saw another person), Druid Arch in Canyonlands, and hiking up into Cedar Breaks from outside the park. In Grand Staircase, I greatly enjoyed going to Broken Bow Arch (again, never saw anyone else). The loop in Natural Bridges is also wonderful, especially if you know where to look for the hidden ruins and rock art that the NPS doesn't advertise. I very much appreciate your videos; they are giving me lots of good ideas for my next trip.

these old people hiked the paved trail to the entrance of the narrows (we are in our 80s) and the down side was the enormous crowds. However, the beauty of Zion is incredible and it was a special treat to see you in a place where we had stood and looked and wished we were younger and more fit and could go on. So delighted to follow you down from the top! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I really appreciate parks for giving hikers separate hikes for people's capabilities. I love to see beautiful smaller hikes for the handicap and a 20 mile hike for more physically capable people. As I get older I've been on both ends of this and it's nice to see. Thanks for taking us people along who aren't able to hike the 17 miles anymore.

The narrows was so amazing. Renting the boots from the store and bringing our own trekking poles made a HUGE difference. The ankle support from the boots and having both trekking poles allowed us to move so much faster than the crowds and get deep into the canyon away from everyone and spend much more time there. It was incredible. Dont be a dupe and pay for a broomstick! Two trek piles will save you.

I did the through hike solo in Sept 2011’. The shuttles couldn’t make it to the trailhead due to the roads being too muddy. I decided to hike the last 15 miles to the trailhead anyways & literally had the top half of the canyon to myself. Didn’t see another hiker until about 11am the next day! Definitely my most memorable hike ever!

It's actually interesting and strange to see you hike in such a crowd, with all the chatter in the background and you looking a wee bit tense and ill at ease. So vastly different from watching you move through vast empty deserts, or scrambling up remote, obscure land formations without another human around for miles and miles. It adds to the great variety in your videos and makes them some of the best on KZbin, Tristan. Thanks so much for including this one. It's a gem. Just seeing the tent by your car in the opening was odd lol.

I absolutely love the hike to Union Falls in Yellowstone NP. It definitely passes the test of low crowds due to the location of the trailhead(s) and the fact it’s also about 17 miles.

Very enjoyable! I appreciate that you do alot of "normal" exploration, hikes, etc. You travel much the way I did in my 30s and still try to when I can now. Practical, seeing "toursity" stuff if it's along the way, seeking solitude where you can but not avoiding stuff that you want to see just because there are other people. I would send anyone to your channel to see what things they might enjoy

I did the narrows back in 1999 and for that time period, I would say it's definitely one of the best hikes I've ever done. I was lucky enough to do this before there were so many tourist. That would definitely take away the magic of the experience. I hiked with a few people and we camped half way. The camp site shown is the exact location and it was amazing. I would not go back to do this hike because of the people. But, I would say if you haven't done it, don't be swayed by my words. Some people aren't bothered by crowds and it is a fantastic hike! cheers!
@donnabrowne53072 жыл бұрын
I've not hiked the Narrows. I admit that the risk of flash flooding gives me pause, and I noticed the wear of waterlines on the canyon walls at about the level of your hat. I don't have your level of fitness or experience, but I hiked Zion's Angel's Landing four years ago at age 54. It was strenuous, daunting, and exhilarating, and I'm so glad I pushed through--the 360 view of the canyon and river from the final platform is breathtaking and worth every ache and groan. I learned that I'm not bothered by heights and that it was important to be always cognizant of my footing and center of balance. If a chain was present, I had a death grip on it. That said, I admit that the short sections where no chain was possible gave me the biggest rush--there I felt freest and most fully connected to this wonder of nature. On the way down, at the sharp curve under the overhang, a very strong wind swept through, almost knocking me off my feet and into the cliff face. It lasted 2-3 minutes, and I hoped anyone up on the fin's edge had a good grip on a chain, a very scary place to get stuck. A new video on SUV RVing has become the much-anticipated kick-off to my Saturdays. Many thanks, Tristan.

I did the Narrows hike in August of 2017 for my 50th birthday. It was and has been, up until this last week, my favorite hike! The experience I had hiking the Narrows was just incredible. We didn't experience heavy crowds on that hike there, due to the solar eclipse, most people were in other areas of the country 😊 This last week, I did a hike that was equally as magical as my hike here. 😊 This is a wonderful video of The Narrows. It really shows its beauty. I really like how you give so much good information on the trek 😊

I really enjoyed the video! Thanks! I always wondered about a top down hike. Shuttle, difficulty, campsites, permits. My bottom up four mile hike in April was great. Early shuttle and brisk hiking allowed me to get ahead of most people. Pants were waist high and I brought in water at that pool. I fell over once and my staff started to float away. I was impressed with how the wet foot Canyoneering Boots conformed to the river bed. The hike made for a top 10 day for me but I liked the Half Dome hike much more. Very fun and unique! I think using a bicycle to begin bottom up hike at dawn would be a good plan. I forget stuff too!
@timothylinn Жыл бұрын
My wife and I hiked out and back from the last shuttle stop (back before there were shuttles) and it was definitely breathtaking. It was August 2000. We wore shorts and tennis shoes. Left at 6am. No other people. It was literally painful to get in the water. By the time we got back it was so hot that we didn't want to get out of the water. There was more water than you had to deal with. There were points where we were swimming-my wife, at least.

Definitely one of the best hikes in the U. S. I was able to do it as a bottom up day hike in 2008 before the NPS closed the Zion road to cars. I was in the canyon at the crack of dawn and had it to myself all the way to the turnaround. Lots of people in the canyon as I made my way down canyon. You are right about it being a totally different (and much better) experience when you have the canyon to yourself. Half Dome compares to it as does Mt. Katahdin via the Knife Edge in Maine. Those would be my top three hikes in the U. S.

I'm glad I don't mind sharing trails with other people because the best trails do attract folks! But generally, we're all so happy that it's fun to smile and share the experience as long as it's not a huge crowd! My favorite hikes so far have been in the Tetons, and they do attract people, but I try to avoid the most crowded times and enjoy the friendly greetings when I do meet up with folks. Less risk of bears, too...

I have gone in from the bottom 8 times. I have gotten to Big Springs 3 times. I have been to 40 of the National Parks. I have shared with everybody that it is the BEST National Park day adventure. The crown jewel of the National Park System. It is a Natural Cathedral. Even after doing it 8 times I am still amazed that so many people....do it. This isn't a pleasant hike in a stream. You are walking on bowling balls when you can't walk the shoreline. I am so proud of the Hoard of people that take the time to do this. It does make me work trying to crop people out of the photos, but it is the price you pay to be in that wonderful river. I helped my eldest son do the day trip like you did. Dropped him off at Chamberlain Ranch and met him when he came out of the river. Glad you tried to document what I call "The Decision". Getting around that huge rock where the water got deep. Coming from the bottom I sit and watch people attempt to get around it going upstream. Trying to "decide" if I want to attempt it. Going up......to the left it is a friggin Deep pool. (I walked through it coming back one time, because I had a scare going up on the right. It was neck deep at its deepest....Ha)). And on the right (the way you went) can have a couple questionably deep smaller pools and very slippery rock ledges. Depth depends on how much sand has deposited. So glad that you have experienced the Virgin River Narrows. With that said........I can't imagine what the future holds for this experience. It is definitely one of the most over utilized section of grandeur in the National Park Service.

Beautiful! My favorite hikes are the random ones around BLM campsites. Such a feeling of freedom and solitude and beauty when you can use the gps and get in a couple miles here and there off trail. Those hikes make me sort of feel at one with nature and the early native Americans and settlers, etc.

Another terrific episode, Tristan! If you ever find yourself in NW Arkansas, the Indian Creek Canyon trail off the Buffalo National River is an amazing day hike! Also, the West Fork of the Oak Creek Canyon trail in the Coconino National Forest outside Sedona, AZ is similar to the Narrows in that it has a 3 mile easy in&out trail that's beautiful.... or there's 11 or so more miles and more beauty beyond the 3 mile mark, if you're willing to get wet.... very similar terrain as the Narrows. I'm sure you could hike it in a day. My daughter and I took our time & spent three days from one end to the other. Can't wait to go back! Really enjoy your stuff and appreciate all your efforts to bring us the sights & sounds & personal commentary.

I feel the same way about crowds. I have a video on my channel of what I think was my favorite day hike. I got up early and walked through Watkins Glen State Park with nobody there at sunrise. Epic. You’re right that the solitude or lack thereof impacts things.

The Narrows is absolutely my favorite hike. I’ve only hiked it in August when it’s nice and hot and the water is quite refreshing. A whole Nother world

Very nice! A gorgeous hike. We were there 4 years ago in May and it was like Disney World, way too populated!! We ended up taking different hikes, away from people that didn't require a shuttle. It's a beautiful park. Push your RV Mirrors in, or you will get them torn off, at the entry of the park! LOL Thanks for sharing! Thanks for your channel. I just subscribed.

I've never done this incredible hike. All I can say is that it's better than any day hike I've ever done or likely will do. At my age I'm happy to get out once in a while and walk a few miles in any of our beautiful public lands. I really appreciate the great work you do with this channel and Adventure Know How, Tristan. I live somewhat vicariously through you and some other amazing KZbin channels, but you all inspire me to get out several times each year.

The wife and I went there in November 2019. It was 40 degrees and raining. We saw like three people there. The shuttle buses were empty. It was incredible.

That was an awesome video. I like your unique take on it. I’ve seen several people and couples do it and clearly it’s a beautiful place. It’s true that you have to remember to look back since the light is often better and dramatic from that perspective. All that water and no go pro? Thanks for the visit.
