I love everything Suzanne does. So, when I was buying Songs of Red and Grey I didn't know any of the songs (it was just the new Suzanne Vega album and I've needed to have it, like all of her works) and then I put the CD to play and I was presented with this incredible gem. It gives the mood of the whole album: melancholic, reflexive and beautiful. A lot of things brought problems to the commercial performance of the album: WTC attacks, the lack of official videos and, in my humble opinion, the wrong choice of Last Year's Troubles as main single. It should have been Penitent the logical choice, it's the best song! It's a shame. Songs of Red and Grey is one of the most beautiful, well crafted record of Suzanne's career. I listen to It on a regular basis.

Songs in Red and Gray was in my opinion the perfect distillation of her amazing albums between 1985 and 1996 (even the Days of Open Hands album had Men in a War and Rusted Pipe that stood out). Widow's Walk, Penitent and It Makes Me Wonder are all timeless classics, even though they will always be eclipsed by Luka and Tom's Diner.

I was in college when Solitude Standing came out, and collected that and her first (in no order that I remember) LPs, and wore them out. I completely agree with you. All the songs you name are in my personal hopper of Vega songs to study (I'm a guitarist).

I could not agree more!!! This album was overlooked IMHO. Exquisite insights, grace, beauty. Soap and Water, Song in Red and Gray, and Priscilla are also favorites - I love every song on this album though!

This is my favorite song of Suzanne Vega’s. Has been since the moment I first heard it. I’ve never been in a romantic relationship before and don’t know (beyond her incredible interpretation) what it is like for those out there who have. This song symbolizes that and many other forms of rejection. It symbolizes to me what being singled out means, and dealing with the consequences and motives of that experience. She seeks God’s existence and understanding. For me, I seek the reasons why I was bullied for most of my life, why I was chosen out of about 1 in every 250,000 people each year to battle a rare condition. Why I was singled out in these circumstances and so many others alongside them. Vega’s music means so much to me. Thank you, Suzanne, for being an inspiration to me and many others.

This has been my lullabye (with me playing it on my guitar) for my rabbit, for exactly one year: she was an Easter bunny that I rescued. I had to let a friend take care of her while I move, today, and, since my guitar is already moved, I sang it to her a capella. I love this song so much, and still can't do it justice. Maybe someday.

Rupert Hine productions in my view can be particularly difficult to render in concert because they tend to very heavily designed for a studio environment. That being said, Suzanne Vega does really well with 'Penitent,' making it more acoustic than the album version, but very much like it in terms of tone and pacing. It also helps that the instrument that is her voice is at the heart of things.
