@@superbolt1239 I just did it the second time, was a convenient afternoon's job. Consider resourcing some fuel lines before you start, will be easier to fit them back and today's gas eats it quickly.

Side note: I am having a hard time finding neutral when the bike is idling.... But it's so much easier when the bike is rolling or when the engine is killed.... Also the engine makes a gasp on a cold start

Thanks! Just bought myself a 2004 GS500 with about 19,000kms on it. Noticed a power dip around 6000rpm going uphill on the freeway and since the bike was sitting unused for a fair while I figure it's due for a fuel system clean. Your video is extremely helpful :)

Your tutorials are brilliant. I like the headings followed by video. I've been riding since 1998 but have just today started my first service thanks to your and a few other KZbin videos. I never even knew what a petcock was until I saw this video so thanks for making it simple enough for me. I look forward to being a more independent motorcyclist from now on. PS: I'm currently riding a 2011 GS500 and find your GS tutorials quite applicable to my model

I have a 2007 GS500F and I recently put an exhaust on it and upped the jet sizes to 142.5 main, 62.5 mid, and 20 pilot, and ever since I did that my bike hesitates and bucks at around 8k RPM and struggles to go any higher until I shift to the next gear. I have a video on my channel showing what happens. Would a dirty carb cause this? I sprayed a little throttle body cleaner (I didn't have carb cleaner for some reason) through the passages and I think it was clean. I've never worked on carbs before so I'm not sure. I also didn't touch anything in the carb except for the jets. I checked all the fuel lines and everything is good. I also checked all the vent tubes and vacuum lines and everything looks good there. I tried running my bike with the petcock set to prime so see if it was the petcock vacuum but it still bucked at 8k. I also looked at the spark plugs and they looked pretty good but they looked a little white so could it be running lean? The exhaust also pops a lot on deceleration. I have the mixture screws set to 2.5 turns out. I also have a oem style HiFloFiltro air filter. I would really appreciate any sort of feedback! EDIT: I figured out that the 142.5 main jets were way too big for my setup so it was running really rich at high rpm. I switched them out for 132.5's and it runs great now.

Great vid! When my gs is cold, it sorta bogs down and there's a light backfire when i start accelerating, but it all clears up when the bike is properly warmed up. Acceleration is ok hot or cold. I suspect that the pilot jet is slightly clogged. The bike sat for a long time with old gas in it, all been flushed...have a clue to this?

Awesome vid, very helpful. Before I do this on my GS500, my bike runs ok on constant speed and throttle openings but if I do say 60mph and open it a little more it loses power, if I pull the throttle harder and it goes faster again. If I do a constant 80mph is surges... little faster little slower all the time. Could this be dirty carbs / jets? Thanks man.

MisterDoctorProfessor always good to do a carb cleaning hpwever that isnt your problem as to why it runs rough in the cold. Inside the carb are jets, jets control fuel flow. Most likely the bike is jetted for warmer temps, this was make it act up in colder temps

Hey BaltimoreGS, I had to replace the carb on my 2006 GS500f. I finally got it running, and it idles fine at around 1500 RPM. however, when I pull the throttle it jumps and lingers at a high rpm then slowly comes down to idle. Friend says it might be the air screw that I need to adjust. Could it be because of the slack on the throttle cables like you said in the video? Great video by the way. Help me A LOT when I tried to take out and clean my first carb, but found out its FUBAR.

And then my actual fuel tap was leaking, so I’ve had to order that in. What are you struggling with ?

Radim, I have a similar issue and from what I read, it's the idle jet that could be clogged. When it's at idle, that's the jet that the fuel is sent through. Mine has the same issue: Start with choke on, let it warm up, close choke all the way and it dies. Can anyone confirm this?

Joel Hug hi i think i have different proble, which is like "delayed choke": vause cannot start, i have to turn the starter on for long time many times, and also have to put a throotle up, but when it finally starts and just a little warms up, choke starts to be functional and everything is okay, on neutral engine goes normally...And when i start when the engine is warm. it starts immediatelly with no problem. that´s why i am so confused of it. if someone knows what it could ba caused, please let me know

I recently spoke to a mechanic about this and it is most likely due to the carbs needing a good cleaning. This may be the only solution aside from running Seafoam or Berryman's B12 through each tank of gas for a while although I'm not convinced this is good for the engine to do it for long periods of time.

It´s warm right know here in Czech republic, so the problem with starting is okay, that means: starting WITHOUT choke only with a little throttle, but sometimes when i want to accelerate really fast, there is a pause before going fast. But usually only when i want to overtake rapidly. at the end of this moto season i would like to clean it up and also have to make more service. If i have some new info i will write it here. It's nice to see this much in the video. But for newer GS500s, it's missing a lot. 1. Extra line from the tank 2. Whole buncha electronics attached to the carb 3. The petcock looks a little different Would be nice to see details for that. Also, on newer bikes, maybe its better to remove, and put back, the airbox separately.

@@ELCLAVE300 The pilot circuit is the smallest circuit so it clogs up first and causes Idle issues. Most people turn the idle set screw up far enough to start pulling the intermediate needle up a to allow enough fuel to make it run. A proper Idle is fed only from the Pilot circuit. hope this helps!
