At low speeds on the SV650 with the standard exhaust you can actually talk/shout to pedestrians. I've gotten a few "shouting friends" on my autumn adventures on the Danish back roads. This wan't possible in the seventies on my GT550!

Retirement! I’m 70 in April and it’s getting close. The word is, you don’t retire from something, you retire to something! And the mental health. I’m in a ski town and I sorely miss riding for 5 or sometimes 6 months a year. But you click into your skis and the same thing happens. The focus and riddance of extraneous thoughts.

Great mutter TAYM and mental health is a problem for many so well done for mentioning it in this way. I do know someone who when people ride out with him spends the time trying to leave everyone behind not sure why really but it takes all sorts I guess , I am retired now and this winter has been hard for me but getting to the end now and hoping to start getting out , although the wife does NOT like bikes and would prefer me not to ride if I am honest ,so a certain amount of guilt ensues when ever I do go out probably because I had a good number of spills in the past even in a carpark messing about 😂. I will say watching the Tube does help somewhat though. Although it doesn't quite scratch the itch it helps 😉 good one

One of my "goals" in riding is simply to know my surroundings better. To make the greater area around my (current) home my "back yard" and thereby to feel more at home where I live. (This includes checking out cafes and restaurants of course :) mostly hillside farm-adjacent simple "taverns") Of course you can't see everything while staying on the road (legal offroading isn't a thing in my area). But you can see and experience so much more compared to riding trains and buses (which in Switzerland do work well). I can't do any hiking or mountainbiking for health reasons at the moment. Motorcycling is the most productive and interesting and enjoyable "exploring" I can currently do. And that sure brings with it some mental health benefits.

I had to stop and think about this one as it is a very thoughtful mutter. I thought I would share some things that I ;earned in the USMC sone 40 plus years ago - I'm currently 65. Don't be envious of the other guy - it clouds your thinking. Concentrate on you. You're best may not be good enough - a hard lesson to learn. You may not be the fastest, the most skilled, the best long distance motorcyclist (person) - do what you can do to the best of your ability. If you stand with your nose up against a brick wall you can't see how wide or tall it is, step back from the problem as you said. A Gunnery Sergeant, who was quite upset, OK I think he wanted to kill me, told me "don't do anymore stupid things". That last one can be hardest of all to live up to but it's saved my bacon in many situations from work to riding to confrontations. I learned many more things but one of the most important is to adapt. I've had periods when long days and high miles was all I cared about. I had periods when i worshipped speed. Now I like to stop, see things, talk to people, and just enjoy the fact that i'm still out riding. Been riding since 1974 with no breaks - I have a very understanding family who know how important riding is to me. That is the best mental health tool I have.

I must admit that for my own selfish reasons, I much prefer this type of video to the one with lots of photos (even my own!) as I can let my mind drift and ride vicariously with you. I said much the same thing to Economical Rides the other day too. Putting my Mental Health Professional Hat on for a mo' (hang on, it's a tight fit these days...) Riding a bike is a kind of mindfulness because most of your concentration is on riding, observing and manoeuvring, so you can't pay attention to the internal dialogue most of us have. So those thoughts that might otherwise have bothered you, just drift on by. Which is what doing Mindfulness is all about. And, I suspect it's also what keeps us riding, despite the associated headaches (Insurance, MOTs, breakdowns etc) We are longing for that inner calm, so it isn't really about Speed per se, although I do get a sense of satisfaction when I tackle a bend and it goes well.😀 Right back to Picture-in-Picture editing now.

Some of my most enjoyable rides have been when i had cheap work bikes which i covered in grease and just rode them in all weathers, something about being out in the fresh air all wrapped up warm and a bike purring away unaffected by the bad weather. I also very much enjoy riding on my own and like to document interesting finds with pictures. On the subject of retirement the 3rd time in my life I was made redundant I decided to take some time out & think things through, I decided to semi retire & just work 3 days a week. This I thought would give me more time to ride weather permitting & to get on with the long list of projects awaiting attention in my home workshop, not working the other 2 days a week effectively means I get a 4 day weekend all of which is good for the old mental health issues. Keep on TAYMing & I hope to see you at the REOC meeting at Haywards tomorrow, I will bring something a little different along.

20mph is incredibly slow isn't it TAYM. I was half- expecting you to be overtaken by a man walking a Jack Russell, in a trilby (the man, not the dog)🙂 Which reminds me of when I was on the Norfolk Broads one time and navigating across Breydon Water. It was just before slack water which was great approaching Yarmouth - but not so good as I turned up the Bure. Even at full throttle, dog walkers were overtaking me on the bankside 🤣 I don't like group riding these days for all the reasons you gave. Especially on Ernie. For me, and probably others too, I tend to ride according to what bike I'm on. A couple of years ago about this time of year I was on my VFR800X and pushing on a bit. The VTEC urges you to ride fast, exploring the cusp of that part part where the other valves kick-in and the nature of the bike changes. The airbox howls, the exhaust barks - it's very addictive. But I had a sudden epiphany. I suddenly wondered "why" and "was I actually enjoying myself?" The short answer was NO. I realised that time of my life might be over. The change to the T100 was almost spot on, but the Classic 350 I have now was actually a revelation! Having to actually work at it a bit more took me back to the feelings I had when I started riding many years ago. For me, it was spot on. Honestly, it was either time to slow down - or to pack in altogether. When the weather warms up a bit and the nights draw out I'll be taking myself off to my favourite little places whilst Mrs PGB catches up on her soaps. Just the thing for after a hard, stressful day at work and definitely good for my mental health 🙂 BUT, everyone is different and as long as we're riding and enjoying it - that's perfect. Anyhoo, have a great weekend everybody - might get out for a ride myself.
@TAYM9 ай бұрын
Absolutely 😁 similar thing happened to me when I bought Bertie, more out of curiosity than anything else, but it changed me completely and although I’ve always enjoyed riding, particularly fast, I found a whole new kind of enjoyment, the kind I had as youth 😁 funny isn’t it 😁 thanks PGB 😁

Sat on 2 bikes last week that i am interested in, Triumph 400 speed and a RE super meteor, did not like either one little bit so looks like the gs is staying.
