For people who don’t know; this is not an isolated incident. This particular pod has attacked many boats near the coast of Spain, Portugal and in to the straights. They are a particularly aggressive pod with zero fear of man (and an increasingly scarce preferred food source of tuna…🤷‍♂️)

From what I have heard, this orca pod has discovered that if they harass fishing boats in this way, the crew will often throw some of their catch into the water to distract the orcas and get away. To them, if they do this action, they get free fish. Obviously, they don't know that your boat doesn't have crate-loads of fish for them to eat. They're just trying their luck with any boat they come across.

40+ attacks in the last two years. TIP: I have read the following in the cruisers forum: a) either have a wide berth around the coast (like 20 Nm) or b) drop all sails and put the engine on and start reversing at 2-3 knots. In that way the propellor should protect your rudder. Also: there are several yachts which have very solid rudders (either from steel/aluminium or from a steel construct in them like HR). Like, try to chew on that ONE Orca's hahahaha If I had a full aluminium boat I would probably sail on. I also read in some other forums that in the old days skippers would start to through diesel in the water from the bow to chase away any whales .... Not advocating that of course.

Yes to that. They are sadistic creatures this is why I never stepped up on the stern to lift my motor whilst they attacked as I know they are constantly watching for a mistake then they will have you. Drown you slowly I doubt they will eat you but they will definately chew you up imagine your any creature like a fly, fish, mouse etc and the whale is a cat. This orca problem has already got out of hand due to poor investigation work and no interest in actually fixing the problem. I've got PTSD from this experience but it hasn't stopped me from sailing the boat through uncharted territories and yes I've met bigger orcas since which triggers the events all over again so I arm myself ready to execute them and analyse the situation before commitment so I don't just kill a curious creature as its not their fault at the end of the day. All orcas are hostile in my opinion as I live offshore and pass these things just like someone passes the park or bus stop on their way to work or whatever.

@SailingPantera
@SailingPantera 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Graeme yes the only advice I can give you is be vigilante always be ready to cut off your engines/sonar/depth sounder, reduce sails as they can spin the boat into excessive jibes which is what happened to us. Minimalise noise (radio) etc. You don't want too make them too curious as they love attention. You could throw white paper overboard as we did which added a distraction for them. You could use an old white fender to throw in. Also if they get too close or do things your extremely uncomfortable with you can attach a flare on a long stick and light it then stick it in the water near their faces. This works well I know or if you have a gun or compound bow like me you can shoot them as its either you or them. I also counter acted the steering carefully as they were always watching me and what I was doing like a game. If I hadn't done this they would have broken my steering and shattered both my pontoons and we would of been lunch. I hope this helps and the orcas have from Morocco to the bay of biscay as a playground and they seem to enjoy the shallows more. They are territorial so do as I did keep the vessel moving on either slow or moderate speeds (2kts, 3kts) and no matter what they are doing to you eventually they will leave to go back to their turf. Happy sailing fair winds🤙🏿🌊⛵🏝️

GoPro: Orca Rescue in 4K - KZbin This may be a good clue as to why Orcas are following Boats as Dr. Visser the Orca rescue lady stated that they take captive orcas and get them "To Follow Boats" as part of their introduction to being set free in the ocean? As smart as Orcas are I think that behavior may get transferred to other pods?

There have been attacks on boats for a few months, cases are known in the north of the Galician coast and in the Strait of Gibraltar in Spain. They always attack the rudder. The reason for this behavior is still not very clear, games, attacks, training for hunting, it is not known. The crew of a Dutch sailboat, says that they avoided the attack, stopping the engine, and all the electronic instruments, lowering the candles and waiting until the group of killer whales left. It seems that if there is no persecution, they lose interest.

I wonder if they are starving Orca that have been scavenging off the bodies of refugees in those not very well built and seriously overloaded and often capsized refugee boats. It would not be a long reach for the already starving Orca to start deliberately knocking over boats once the behaviour was learned it would begin to spread from pod to pod as Orca switch pods to mate. It all seems to have originated in the area where the Refugee boats are traveling.

Have you had further thoughts as to why they are apparently aggressive ?
@SailingPantera
@SailingPantera 3 жыл бұрын
It's to do with the mother something happened to her to make her aggressive. I didn't see her and I was hoping to see her. I assume she got taken out by a bigger prop and turned into spaghetti as she was the one with all the scars cuts etc and she taught the young, so now that she's gone they are half trained in taking out boat rudders, props and keels. Plus they are mentally ill obviously due to them smashing their heads and bodies on rudders and props, I had quite a few hours with them and I like to analyse everything if I can. Near to the end of the video I was close to shooting them due to the damage they were doing. I feel sorry for them as humans are the problem and need to go unfortunately. There were 4 Orcas all male it was incredible watching their hunting tactics really fascinating but I have to be responsible for my boat and crew at all times. I hope this information helps. 👍🏿🌊⛵🐳

This has been occurring for months. It is not new. The frequency of attacks is increasing. Spanish (not exclusively, of course) fishing fleets have hoovered-up all available Fish from in-shore grounds leaving nothing for Orcas to eat. Result is Orcas attempting to chase away all Boats in their seas - they have not figured-out the difference between a fishing boat and a Sail boat, yet seem to realise that Ferries, Cruises Liners, Oil Tankers & Container Ships are not the problem. They are focused on the rudder, just as they would on the tail of a Whale, Dolphin or other prey species, as it will disable the boat. Smart creatures.

@@SailingPantera I don’t think humans are on their menu but with lack of fish in the area that might change. I think this particular pod is coming for revenge for some reason and targeting boats. It could be the sound of the engine or possibly that another sailor on a boat harmed them and they remember it or even that they blame boats for lack of fish. I’ve heard orca experts saying that they have seen orcas studying the boats and watching them take their food supply so maybe that is it. But yes if they have killed someone it’s most likely by drowning since they don’t like our meat but we will never know because we would have to have a survivor tell their tale. Anyways I’m so glad you guys are okay. I was scared for you watching it but you all stayed very calm and handled it like pro’s.

Who stands to profit from this action? There is a dry dock in the area ranked #1 among sailers for rudder repair and other sail boat needs, and they may even a a tow boat to bring in those rendered incapiable of returning to port.
