From what I have heard, this orca pod has discovered that if they harass fishing boats in this way, the crew will often throw some of their catch into the water to distract the orcas and get away. To them, if they do this action, they get free fish. Obviously, they don't know that your boat doesn't have crate-loads of fish for them to eat. They're just trying their luck with any boat they come across.

40+ attacks in the last two years. TIP: I have read the following in the cruisers forum: a) either have a wide berth around the coast (like 20 Nm) or b) drop all sails and put the engine on and start reversing at 2-3 knots. In that way the propellor should protect your rudder. Also: there are several yachts which have very solid rudders (either from steel/aluminium or from a steel construct in them like HR). Like, try to chew on that ONE Orca's hahahaha If I had a full aluminium boat I would probably sail on. I also read in some other forums that in the old days skippers would start to through diesel in the water from the bow to chase away any whales .... Not advocating that of course.

@SailingPantera3 жыл бұрын
Hello Graeme yes the only advice I can give you is be vigilante always be ready to cut off your engines/sonar/depth sounder, reduce sails as they can spin the boat into excessive jibes which is what happened to us. Minimalise noise (radio) etc. You don't want too make them too curious as they love attention. You could throw white paper overboard as we did which added a distraction for them. You could use an old white fender to throw in. Also if they get too close or do things your extremely uncomfortable with you can attach a flare on a long stick and light it then stick it in the water near their faces. This works well I know or if you have a gun or compound bow like me you can shoot them as its either you or them. I also counter acted the steering carefully as they were always watching me and what I was doing like a game. If I hadn't done this they would have broken my steering and shattered both my pontoons and we would of been lunch. I hope this helps and the orcas have from Morocco to the bay of biscay as a playground and they seem to enjoy the shallows more. They are territorial so do as I did keep the vessel moving on either slow or moderate speeds (2kts, 3kts) and no matter what they are doing to you eventually they will leave to go back to their turf. Happy sailing fair winds🤙🏿🌊⛵🏝️

I assume she got taken out by a bigger prop and turned into spaghetti as she was the one with all the scars cuts etc and she taught the young, so now that she's gone they are half trained in taking out boat rudders, props and keels. Plus they are mentally ill obviously due to them smashing their heads and bodies on rudders and props, I had quite a few hours with them and I like to analyse everything if I can. Near to the end of the video I was close to shooting them due to the damage they were doing. I feel sorry for them as humans are the problem and need to go unfortunately. There were 4 Orcas all male it was incredible watching their hunting tactics really fascinating but I have to be responsible for my boat and crew at all times. I hope this information helps. 👍🏿🌊⛵🐳
@WildlifeObsessed3 жыл бұрын
This has been occurring for months. It is not new. The frequency of attacks is increasing. Spanish (not exclusively, of course) fishing fleets have hoovered-up all available Fish from in-shore grounds leaving nothing for Orcas to eat. Result is Orcas attempting to chase away all Boats in their seas - they have not figured-out the difference between a fishing boat and a Sail boat, yet seem to realise that Ferries, Cruises Liners, Oil Tankers & Container Ships are not the problem. They are focused on the rudder, just as they would on the tail of a Whale, Dolphin or other prey species, as it will disable the boat. Smart creatures.

@@SailingPantera What happened to you and your crew is unfortunate but if they are aggravated perhaps more violence will escalate it. Especially if you theorize that they may be upset about what happened to their mother. Perhaps consider quieter motors? Or wait for the scientists to respond. Killing them will cause them to go extinct faster. I do agree that they are clearly suffering from distress and mental health issues. That behavior is witnessed only in captivity when theyre under extreme pressure.

We were just leaving the Gibraltar straight (Towards the Atlantic) when 4 orcas came to play (let's sink the boat). 👍🏿😩 I just think about all the migrants who must of been fast food for these guys and no one is talking about that yet. I guess we will need a survivor but I doubt there will be one. 😔
@taytayb12313 жыл бұрын
@@SailingPantera I don’t think humans are on their menu but with lack of fish in the area that might change. I think this particular pod is coming for revenge for some reason and targeting boats. It could be the sound of the engine or possibly that another sailor on a boat harmed them and they remember it or even that they blame boats for lack of fish. I’ve heard orca experts saying that they have seen orcas studying the boats and watching them take their food supply so maybe that is it. But yes if they have killed someone it’s most likely by drowning since they don’t like our meat but we will never know because we would have to have a survivor tell their tale. Anyways I’m so glad you guys are okay. I was scared for you watching it but you all stayed very calm and handled it like pro’s.

I'm sure you know already that Nat geo, History and discovery are terrible platforms to learn from but I guess it's the best for people on land etc. I would do my own research and gather other intelligences like conservationists, marine biologists, whale experts to look at this as Nat geo will have information on this in about 20, 30yrs time. I was amazed it took them 20 years or something to discover that fish talk to each other whereas I was already in the water as a free diver knowing this information. Just an example. To be fair I don't even like to use KZbin either as it's mostly shit information on here 😅👍🏿

Yeah they are young and the mother didn't perfect her lessons for the calfs so they are quite shit at breaking boats but still extremely affective like I said before. Seems to me that these attacks happen in the same areas, but no where else in the world... What if these whales were trained to attack vessels? To try and render them helpless. Who stands to profit from this action? There is a dry dock in the area ranked #1 among sailers for rudder repair and other sail boat needs, and they may even a a tow boat to bring in those rendered incapiable of returning to port. Just seems weird to me, that this behavior with this pod of Orcas is an ungoing issue.
