There is a coolant drain under the water pump cover in front of the clutch cover. The bolt in the water pump cover is for bleeding air from the system. Check the service manual in the maintenance chapter.

Oh yeah lol - never even noticed even on the 650 lol you learn something everyday. Cheers

650 water pump and clutch cover are quite different to the 1000. The drain plug on the front of the 1000 clutch cover (10mm hexagon facing to the front near the pump) is as near as you can get to the bottom of the water jacket. All but 50cc is drained from there. What stays in collects in the bottom of the two water ways between pump and base of each barrel. With careful use of a funnel you can catch all the old coolant to save spills and of course use it again if its a rush job and the shops are shut.

@Dirty Garage Guy Hey Matt, random cooling system question for you. When the thermostat opens, what is the direction of flow? I'd always assumed cold water flows past the pump into the engine, & hot water past the thermostat into the rad. On my car, though, the upper hose to the pump heats up very quickly while the lower hose to the stat remains cold until it opens. Do I have my mental flow chart backwards??

The drain plug is a bit further down and closer to the front cylinder and it is pointing directly down towards the right oil cooler line.... :)

Is that a aftermarket rad? i've been looking on ebay and all the one i see have that same extension for the cap. just wondering how its been and if the overflow works correctly ?

Great video. I have to change the coolant tank after a dickhead put his thumb through the old one checking out my bike the other day. Grrr. Have ordered and received the reservoir, now have to change it over. I'm new to any of this stuff, the manual calls for use of a torque wrench, and some specific tightening amounts. Am I right to just tighten it as much as I can or is it important?

you know, come to think of it, i can't find a single thing wrong with my Kawasaki as far as design goes, except fastener choice and maybe on newer ones the slightly short wires that cause stretching and breakage, and even though everything from that time seemed to have it, wires that seem to attract mice or something, can you find anything wrong with the design? 1985 Kawasaki Ninja 600 GPZ, or any Kawasaki for that mater, be sure to say which one you're talking about (question directed at Matt, but anyone can answer)

I don't understand why manufacturers don't put drain plugs in the lowest part of the circuit, so you get as much of the old stuff out as possible. I get the amount left in the pump is small but why not put the plug below the inlet to the pump or on a stem where the hose attaches, pointing down & away from your engine. Am I missing something? My Yamaha pisses oil over my front tyre during a change (well once was enough to learn) Do they do it out of spite?
@thedirtyworkshop7 жыл бұрын
Basically they design the engine with performance in mind. Then the turbo nerds get in there and start fucking around with emissions fuel consumption etc. After all that they sit back and pat each other on the back. Then someone says; 'How we gonna fill it with fluid?" They all shit the bed and work it out before tea time. But in reality you have to put the water pump etc somewhere and usually the cylinder layout etc denotes where that is. And we end up with this shit!

More proof that the designer hates mechanics? The coolant plug is on the RIGHT side of the bike, rather than the left, so the coolant pisses down the right side of the bike.
