I'd had a slight interest in learning what the deal was with arduino microcontrollers, and in the downtime that 2020 caused I decided to pull the trigger. I picked up a starter kit and ran through the basics of building circuits and learning basic coding, with the end goal of building a custom gauge cluster for my SV650 project bike. I spent most of the year stumbling through learning the basics and was finally able to put the pieces together to make a functioning unit, after 30 iterations of the code.
Then, someone took it upon themselves to destroy it this winter. Great. But, it gave me an opportunity to rebuild it and record this video, so while it was frustrating it was no great loss.
The tachometer function measures the frequency of the signal telling the ignition coil to fire, then does some basic math to output it in RPM. This is a 12V signal, so I have the input wire split into a voltage divider, with the ground going to the coil ground wire to minimize wiring at the arduino unit. I used this webpage ( ohmslawcalcula... ) to determine which resistors to use.
The speedometer function pulls data from the GPS unit and updates when new data is available. As I said in the video, the GPS unit is currently using velcro to stick to the back of the number plate, but when I (eventually) design a housing, it will live inside there.
The gear indicator was originally only going to be a neutral light, but once I discovered the signal was nearly 0V to nearly 5V I decided to incorporate a gear indicator. I will update this when I do maintenance and see which plug and pin it connects to on the bike.
The temperature sensor is powered and simply taped to the side of the radiator hose. It works well enough to give me a general idea of the temperature.
The fuel level sensor comes off of the fuel pump wiring harness. I will update this when I do maintenance next and see which plug and pin it connects to on the bike.
The oil pressure wiring comes from the oil pressure wire on the KOSO plug, directly to an analog input on the arduino. The KOSO plug's paperwork shows which wire this is.
The unit is powered by the KOSO plug's switched power wire and ground, which I soldered to a voltage regulator tuned to 5V, then soldered a wire with a power plug going to the 5V input on the arduino. This was to have the power switch with the key, as well as to maintain the USB port available to use the serial monitor to verify functionality, troubleshoot, and determine input levels to control outputs. My original intention was to have all the inputs to the arduino be through the KOSO plug, but most of the data going to the stock gauge unit is serial data sent from the bike's ECU, and parsing that is far beyond my skillset.
I will post a separate video going over the code.

Sikk! Now need to teach it to be a laptimer and to talk to the power commander

Not sure about talking to the PC, but I had looked into setting a geofence to kick over a lap timer. I'd have to program it in for each track, and put on a microSD card unit and code it to record it to that because when the arduino turns off all the memory is wiped.

I'm starting down the Arduino path to make a similar project for my 87 Hurricane.

use engine rpm and speed to calculate what gear your in, you can also use the 1-5v along with rpm and speed to pick a gear

I'd read about and thought about using engine speed/wheel speed to calculate and display gear, but I figured since I've got a gear indicator basically built into the bike I'd go ahead and use it. I may take your idea and incorporate engine speed to smooth out the gear display though. Thanks!

I've actually been working on it again lately after not riding/working on it much the last couple years. Working a lot and busy with life. I've been thinking about doing an update/work video though, might have to get one in the works sometime in the next few weeks.

Steering axle? Stem? It's the GSXR unit. The generation of GSXR that I swapped the front end from uses the same bearings as the SV one so it's pretty plug-and-play, you won't need to press out the SV stem and press it into the GSXR lower triple.
