Shane Van Boening plays Corey in a 9 ball "mini", a small warmup tournament before the actual 8-ball event. Shane racks the balls, gets ready to break, Corey inspects the rack. Shane breaks, scratches, and rakes the balls. Then just drops out of the tournament.

I like the idea about the magic rack or sardo tight rack. About the equipment-you work with what you have. I commend the folks for hosting a tournament and making the best of it. These guys are trying to make a living at probably the hardest game in the world and reaping the cheapest of prize money compared to other professional sports. I think it takes great imagination and patience to spend hours and hours working a rack of balls for an advantage. Hats off to you guys. Pool has been manipulated since they invented bigger pockets and smaller tables. And let's not forget Earl's favorite-the jump cue. I've said enough. It's truly a beautiful game to watch. Especially when the right player is showing you how it's done. To quote: "You play a beautiful game Fats."

Given Corey's propensity for pattern racking, especially on smaller tables, SVB had to be thinking, "Are you kidding me? I didn't even look at your rack and you're going to inspect mine when you're up 1-0?" Then he scratches on the break and just throws in the towel because he knows it's going to turn into a re-rack fight the rest of the match. I think the better thing to do in that situation is take a 5 minutes break to cool off and then come back and discuss with Corey what the ROE for the rest of the match is going to be with regards to racking.

@melc8049
@melc8049 Жыл бұрын
So there's no chance of cheating the rack when you rack your own?? Pattern racking, leaving spaces between certain balls, tilting the rack, racking the front ball too far forward or too far back, or the blatant placing the 9 ball on the wing where your breaking at? These are all rack cheating methods when you are allowed to rack your own without someone checking the rack. Shane could have checked Cory's racks going forward too. He could check them every rack. It might have been bad etiquette on Cory's end, but certainly I think it's within his rights to check the rack. How else do you suggest someone can have confidence that the rack was done fairly, if you're not allowed to check the rack because someone thinks checking the rack is cheating? That's like telling someone to fill out the amount on a check you're about to give him, and you not checking the amount he put down. Unwise move if you ask me.

Corey has a lot of history with pattern racking and really bending the rules. It's frustrating and some find it really annoying. Then he has the audicity, after being up 1-0, to go up and check his rack. Shane doesn't need this, he'll just take the loss. He is considered to be the best player in the world by people like danny diliberto, even over Efren. Shane knows it to. He doesn't have to deal with Cory's shit. Also I'm fairly certain, Cory racked the first game with purposeful gaps, which is illegal. Notice the 9 goes in and doesn't even get kissed.

What looked to me what happened, Corey walks up to table, SVB seems unbothered, breaks, scratches and flips out (maybe ironic string of bad breaks) then SVB sit's down pissed off, and you know when you just flip out, it happens to most people sometimes, and just need a few to reconcile it, calm down, and Corey then seems to try and talk, interrupting that process, maybe even complaining. And it's like Corey should really kind of let him be, or hey let's take break? etc. Not be like "oh what was that". Maybe Corey didn't see what happened and was asking, which then SVB having to explain, is just as frustrating.

If they just brought back the sardo(spelling?) tight rack as standard for all tournaments, IMO a lot of these issues would just go away.
@creedolala6918
@creedolala6918 6 жыл бұрын
The way the Sardo worked was actually a bit deceptive... it looks like it just squishes the balls together by pressing the handles right? But that isn't the main trick that gets the balls tight. If you buy one and read the instructions... what they tell you to do is first is squish the balls together with the handles, and then press down hard into the cloth until you create divots. After that the balls can just be loosely gathered with it, and they fall into their divots and stay together. In some ways, that isn't really bad... the divots aren't deep enough to cause any real problems, and when it works then the balls freeze right up even if you don't have a sardo (cuz the cloth now has those divots permanently). In europe, 'tapped tables' with these divots are very common. If you watch eurotour matches, they just roll the balls into position without a rack and they just stay in place, like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX61f2aNrdWNm9k&t=292 The problem is if the divots aren't quite perfect and if the balls tend to have a gap even after settling into their holes. Then there's almost no way to fix them... you push the problem balls together, they fall right back apart again. So really the solution is a magic rack... same idea (divots for the balls to fall into) but if there's a problem you can fix it, by e.g. using a different rack. And you can remove the rack after the break so the divots don't affect the rest of the game. Magic racks are not impossible to cheat, but it's a bit trickier and more obvious, because the balls want to get tight easily and automatically, so anyone spending time fussing with the balls immediately looks suspicious.
@arkt1k
@arkt1k 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that. I always wondered why they went from Sardo to the magic rack. Pool use to be common on ESPN in the earlier 2000's and then seemed to have went away and I stopped watching for a while. Came to KZbin and found matches here and saw they no longer used Sardo. Thanks for the info!
@djough1
@djough1 2 жыл бұрын
@@arkt1k , Think about what forces are acting on the balls when they are in the rack formation. Other than the magnetic force at the atomic level, which is virtually nil, and differences in the woven cloth, the only other real force is gravity. Basically straight down. I'm not taking the curvature of the earth into play, which is minimal. As CreeDo Lala stated, when you first train your cloth to a Sardo you are supposed to wet the cloth with the enclosed water dropper and dropper mask with holes in it where the balls will end up and let the cloth dry with the balls in place "frozen" to each other. Hence, the divots. But the problem as he states is that if a created divot is off by even a fraction of an inch they won't "freeze". As a long time retired National Certified BCA referee, I was called many times at the larger events to judge "frozen" balls. Actually, short of the Van der Waals forces that act on the balls, very very rarely are balls actually "frozen". Unless there is a thread in the weave of the cloth that nudges a ball so that it leans into a neighboring ball and a random divot in the cloth that is forcing the ball to roll downhill into a neighboring ball, there is virtually no other force freezing them together. I would guess that I judged balls "frozen" less than 10% of the time they called me for a final ruling. I actually was creating a cloth training device that would actually place the divots .025" closer to each other than the Sardo divot pattern so that all of the balls would roll downhill towards the center 3 balls on an 8-ball rack. But as soon as the Magic Rack hit the market I looked at it an gave up on my project that I was about to patent. There is a reason the Magic Rack uses diamond shaped holes. It causes the balls to be forced to roll downhill into each other. PotatoeJoe from Idaho.

Here's what happened. Both are clever for pattern-racking, easily the top two. Corey knows there's no rule prohibiting you from inspecting the other's rack. Shane didn't like it, quits after he scratches on the break in the 2nd rack. I guess what cones around goes around haha

All I can think of is that Shane wasn't able to hit his break with the velocity that he wanted because Corey's face was close to the table. Perhaps that caused him to break differently in his mind. Idk. Truthfully Shane just probably felt like if someone wants to take a "mini tourney" that seriously, just take the match. Who knows.

I understand and agree with the comments that it's ok for the opponent to get up and check the rack, but there is a difference between simply checking the rack as a matter of procedure and observation, and checking it as nearly an insult to the other player, almost accusing him of cheating. To me it looks like the latter is happening. Corey just slowly walks up to the table in a seemingly accusatory fashion, then just slowly walks back and audibly hits his stick on the ground while Shane is about to shoot. I think Corey's demeanor is what pissed Shane off the most. Also, don't forget that Shane scratched on that break. I can guarantee, if he didn't scratch, he wouldn't have grabbed those balls and threw them.
@creedolala6918
@creedolala6918 5 жыл бұрын
eh, I really can't imagine how you can walk in an accusatory fashion. Or how how many mph you need to walk to differentiate "accusatory walking" from "tired walking" from "just checking as a matter of procedure". Sounds like reading a lot into it that isn't there. The perception of corey being a jerk, is 100% caused by shane's actions, not corey's. If corey checked the rack, quietly sat down, and then SVB broke and ran... absolutely nobody would care or be upset at corey. So it's SVB causing the drama over something routine that happens in the pool world 100x a day.
@diathekedriven
@diathekedriven 5 жыл бұрын
CreeDo Lala I get that you can't imagine it, but subtleties are important and can be recognized. And yeah, that's my perception, and it's quite a reasonable one. And your sarcastic "mph" isn't the key. If you can't recognize the attitude or demeanor in someone's body language, then I don't know what to tell you. Body language is huge in person-to-person interaction. Not to mention there's a lot of context here that we're not getting. It's the first game yeah, but you don't just start playing with your first shot. They've been playing or practicing for a couple of hours before this. The commentator mentioned something about a match before this (not with Shane and Corey). There was obviously something going on already. Listen to the way the commentator laughs when Corey walks up to check the rack. He makes it clear that there was already something going on between these two and it looks like Corey is making a deliberate attempt to get under Shane's skin. Wrong. The perception of Corey being a jerk could be caused by Corey and the already-established context, or it could be Shane's response. We don't know, we don't have what happened before this. But, we do know this, we've seen much of Shane and how he plays and conducts himself. Outside of maybe Ralph Souquet, he seems to be one of the least aggressive and dramatic players out there. I imagine it would take a lot for Shane to get pissed like this. There's obviously far more to this issue than this short video reveals. And just dismissing my comments doesn't gainsay what I've said. I gave certain reasons for my position.
@creedolala6918
@creedolala6918 5 жыл бұрын
Sure, there may be some history between SVB and Corey that would allow Corey to needle him in some subtle way, and for SVB to pick up on it. But - you'd have to be SVB to pick up on it. To claim you see 'accusation' in his walk is nonsense. I stand by my statement - it wouldn't have occurred to you, if you hadn't seen SVB's reaction. Show this video to 100 random people, and stop it just before SVB breaks, and ask them what corey is communicating with his walk. Nobody's gonna say "Accusation". For the record, they do have history, they both know how to rig the rack, and they both have done so in rack-your-own events. Corey has been caught pattern racking, SVB has been caught gapping the rack. Both of them are aware of the other's racking tricks. So the subtext here isn't "how dare you accuse me of something dishonest", it's probably "come on man, you know you do this shit too, we all do it, quit giving me a hard time about it".
@diathekedriven
@diathekedriven 5 жыл бұрын
CreeDo Lala Appreciate the response. I do think your focus on the concept of "Shane's reaction" is missing the point however. My point is that there is a context to this video that we don't have. And rather than take out Shane's reaction to demonstrate your point, I'm saying ALL of it is important. How and when and in what manner Corey checks the rack, the comments and reaction of the commentators, the scratch on the break, and Shane's reaction at the end. They all contribute to understanding what happened here. You can isolate anything and make it a completely different picture. You can say the same thing about the terrorist passengers that boarded the 9-11 flights. Take out what happened at the end and you have a completely different picture of what happened. It's illegitimate to take out what happens at the end. And yeah, I get that. They're both highly skilled professionals and capable of great things as well as questionable things. But I doubt it's "quit giving me a hard time about this since we both do it." They've clearly been going at this from before this video. It seems ridiculous that Shane would keep doing it if he were doing it earlier, after they had presumably already fought about it, so Corey is doing it to piss him off, and yeah, insult Shane's integrity. This also appears to be the semi-final since Shane quits and takes 3rd place. It's possible that the whole tournament could've been nothing but complaints about Shane and his racking, and all the while he's been careful to 100% fair and legal, and maybe at this point he's over it. Corey does it again and he's like, you know what, I'm done with being accused of this shit, I'm outta here! And, like I said, if he didn't scratch, and maybe got good shape on the 1 ball to the 2 after the break, I can almost guarantee he wouldn't have reacted that way. Seem to be lots of details that come to bear on this video. I can see Shane getting pissed. He's a man. I probably would've been pissed too and probably would've done the same thing.

I don't object to any of what you're saying as far as reactions and emotions. What drives me nuts (and sucks me into YT comment section arguments which generally are fruitless) is that people are quick to bash corey in this scenario (when he didn't do anything wrong) and defend or commiserate with SVB (even though he IS doing something wrong). It's a repeating pattern I see elsewhere, and with other players. People don't want to believe their favorite top pro cheats. They don't recognize it when they see it, and they don't believe it when it's pointed out and explained. People's attitude are "oh my god, who cares, why are people nitpicking the rack? Just hit the balls and play!" Meanwhile there's an epidemic of rack-rigging in pro pool right now, and it actually ruins the outcome of many rack-your-own events. This is sort of a sidetrack to the whole body language discussion but, but since you seem to feel there's a chance SVB is being unfairly accused, here's some reading material. The accusations are legit. www.reddit.com/r/billiards/comments/7u3c1v/a_lot_of_people_feel_like_shaw_was_being_an_ass/ Others have learned the trick, and are starting to copy it. For example, recently Dennis Orcullo ran a 9-pack in a barbox tournament. The skill needed to run 9 racks is not in question. But to have that opportunity, he tweaks the 1-ball to make a gap, allowing him to blast the rack from a few inches off center and drill the same ball into the corner every time. That ball doesn't go with a tight rack unless you break from the side, which is the entire reason tournaments created a 'break box' where side breaking is not allowed. You can see him nudge the 1 ball with his thumb on every single one of the 9 breaks. It's always the last thing he does before lifting the rack. preview.redd.it/yb8st172ago11.jpg?width=930&s=23b110d16a7623260481894737960cc79a0230dc Sorry to go on and on about it, but it's a pet peeve of mine. Gapping the rack and pattern racking ruin 9-ball events and they're the reason that every player SHOULD be checking the rack. And it's 100% fair for SVB to take flak for it.

In 9-ball, it's pretty much the same game but a little easier. 10-ball, same story, players run out a little more often. But in 8-ball, it's actually a slightly tougher game on the barbox. The balls are more clustered and you need to be much more careful with your speed and planning your out. I know that just sounds like something people say to defend 7-footers, but the stats back it up - players really do run out less on barboxes in 8 ball - forums.azbilliards.com/showpost.php?p=5255675&postcount=3 So that's why the 8-ball is the main event for 10,000 and the 9-ball is just a "mini" for like 1,500. I read somewhere that SVB said his favorite game is barbox 8-ball.
@JP-ho4kr
@JP-ho4kr 6 жыл бұрын
Lol 8-ball is not harder on a small table(clusters or not), and the reason there is more prize money for these small table events is because it is so much easier for anyone to win, more people enter resulting in a larger prize pool.
@creedolala6918
@creedolala6918 6 жыл бұрын
It is a little harder, statistically. You may not feel like it is when you're playing, but we have stats from hundreds of matches (pro 8-ball events, featuring top players like SVB). They track how often players break and run, and the runout rate on barboxes is a little lower than on big tables. People might mistakenly THINK it's easier, and therefore enter these barbox events feeling they have a shot to win. But really, they don't. The winners every year are still top players like SVB, Corey, Skyler, Jeffrey Ignacio, etc. Occasionally some lesser-known pros might make the final 4 or something, but not because of the 7-foot table. They get there because many of these events have super short races (like the 4 bears 8-ball event is only a race to 6).
@billycheng6729
@billycheng6729 6 жыл бұрын
if you were any sort of decent player, you would know that barbox 8 ball is harder then regular 8-9 feet tables. so many things can go wrong even though the table looks small. a good straight pool player would have an advantage because they nudge balls correctly and don't really power stroke any shots. sometimess and more so then on regular tables...your position needs to be spot on. its also easier to break clusters on regular tables then on a barbox. they should tighten up the pockets for the big tourneys tho.

What if Shane didn’t scratch on that break ? Is he gonna keep on playing the match or still quit ? For sure Shane wasn’t happy with how Corey checked his rack, and the scratch on the break just added on his frustration and he exploded. Still, if Shane wasn’t agree with Corey, he would had stop breaking and had a convo with the refs about it instead of scratch on the break and dumped the match like a cry baby like this. On the other hands, Corey’s action was very unprofessional and disrespectful when he checked the rack when Shane was ready to break. They are BOTH wrong and didn’t play this game in the gentleman way like it used to be. That’s why pool, a beautiful game, is ruined in America, and sadly, it was ruined by their own players acting petty, childish and willing to do anything unprofessionally in order to get the advantage in such a high level of the game. The viewers of the game, mostly are amateur players, obviously adore those pros who won alot of tournaments, won alot of money just because they think it represents the power and skill in this game, but they got brainwashed by that illusion so much and don’t see the story deep down yet. Pool in the 90s and nowadays are much different and people do play in the higher level than before so it becomes so hard for pros to consistently won tournaments. So they worked harder to figure out how to get advantage in the game by analyzing the racks and learn patterns to get better chance of winning. Nothing’s wrong with it until everyone just keep on exploiting the hell out of it by checking the gap to make the wing ball, if rack is tight they will make the one ball on the side pocket instead, or soft break the magic racks to get the same pattern everytime and win the game . Yes, literally EVERYONE does it now. And guess what ? There is one guy who does it better than every single one, which is SHANE VAN BOENING. He learned the racks so good that he mastered it and play to the level that he uses only one same cue, same shaft and earned over $1,000,000 in pool prizes with it. Noone ever did anything like that. He knows something that other pros players don’t know and it turns in to unfair in this high level pool environment. And when I said the pool community full of amateur adores the most successful player such as Shane, I really mean they are so stupid to the level that they thinks everything Shane does is right, Shane is the best, fuck other people’s opinions. It started getting bad when Mike Dechaine, one of the “bad” dude in pro pool world ( according to mostly everyone) spoke up the truth and complain about how pros players create gap in the rack to make balls, and one of them are Shane. You know how the community reacts? Obviously they won’t listen to a guy who didn’t achieve shit, always shittalk in pool like Dechaine, they protect Shane at all costs because Shane is their god. And also when I said pool is ruined in America, I mean, when is the last time u see an American guy (beside Shane) won any world title overseas??? When is the last time you guys see America won Mosconi Cup ????? When is the last time you see the 1st place pool prize of a tournament in America got higher than $50,000 ??? When is the last time you see people gather up watching televised Pool matches on Espn in a bar, coffee shop, restaurant... or even at home ???? Ask yourself that question and you will understand why pool in completely fucked in America. In my tiny mind, and as a guy who love the game, I think every single match from now on should be racked by wooden rack and by the ref, also players are not allowed to look at the rack, 3 balls has to pass the string line, 9 ball on the spot and finally, shot clock is added. Do it to EVERY SINGLE fucking tournament, that is the only way you make it more interesting and revive the game. P/s: I’m also not from America, I’m Asian and live in Japan, I just love the game and I don’t wanna see it dies slowly and pathetic like this.

Well, I like your enthusiasm :) and to some extent you're right. We have less prize money in pool, and that has made pool players be a little more ruthless in trying to gain an edge, including cheating the rack. Knowing that, what you're saying doesn't add up - If rigging the rack is common, and you believe Shane is a master of it, and you believe people are too quick to give shane the benefit of the doubt... why on earth would you think it's "unprofessional" and "disrespectful" for corey to check? Is he supposed to just let shane do it anyway, even though it seems very likely shane is exploiting gaps that he creates for himself? Is Corey supposed to just let Shane have that advantage? I read that the tournament organizers explicitly told corey "no soft breaking", which isn't even illegal, and doesn't require rigging the rack. So why is it SVB's racking shenanigans are supposed to be ignored, even by the guy who might lose money as a result of them... while corey's perfectly legal breaking tactic is subject to interference and reprimands?
@TRANC3ak47
@TRANC3ak47 6 жыл бұрын
To say Corey is disrespectful when he checked the rack, what I really mean here is this game is the gentleman game, when your opponent is on the table, does not matter he is breaking or shooting, you have no business in doing anything near the table, just stay quiet, sit down and wait for your turn. Don’t shark your opponent like that, it is a very obvious move that everyone knows and try to avoid there. At the end, it was coming from both of them, one acted like a cry baby, and other acted like a douche. If corey wanna check the rack, stop Shane right after he racked, call the refs up and argue about it. I don’t even know if you guys even have a refs for this tournament or not, look at the size of this table, also Valley Table is know for shitty rolls, huge pockets, I assume this tournament doesn’t have any refs around either. Add it up, perfect example of bad way to run a tournament, and yeah small things like these keep on happening in America Pool Community. I don’t see any of American Players treat this game as passion and play with class like it used to be. Very sad
@TRANC3ak47
@TRANC3ak47 6 жыл бұрын
Also, I don’t wanna argue about anything. It is all about my view in American pool, and as far as I know, I’m not the only one. The fact that the whole american pool community isn’t even sure who is right and who is wrong in the bigger picture is the problem. You can clearly see the hate and civil war right in your community.
@creedolala6918
@creedolala6918 6 жыл бұрын
I know what you're saying and you're right in a lot of ways, our pool scene in general is very unprofessional, we don't have refs in situations where a ref is really necessary... and too many players are willing to bend or break the rules just because the ref isn't around and the other player isn't looking. All that being said, I still don't think it's wrong what corey did. You can't have a "gentleman's agreement" if one of the players has a known reputation for cheating the rack. If you do, you're simply allowing your good sportsmanship to be abused and you risk losing money in a sport where there's very little to go around. You seem to feel it would be less bad if he told shane "hold on" right after shane put down the rack, I don't agree... it's more polite the way corey did it. Corey took his first step towards the table literally 1 second after shane put down the rack. It's not like he waited until shane got down to break, took 3 practice strokes, then suddenly jumped out of his chair and said "WAIT. I wanna look at the rack". He checked it as early as he could and he did it quietly, instead of saying "hey, you have to stop and wait while I check this", which would be a much worse 'move'.
@TRANC3ak47
@TRANC3ak47 6 жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as gentleman agreement in billiards. The game was created hundreds years ago and it’s just how it supposed to be. U clearly don’t watch much snooker or 3 cushion billiards. If the opponent is on the table, stay on your chair and be quiet, it’s not rocket science. It is like when u walk thru a door and u hold it for the person behind, there is no agreement about that, it is common sense good deed. And again, noone in this video is right. Like I said, Shane CLEARLY is a cheater by rigging the rack, and Corey, yes he did not do anything wrong, but what he did is NOT polite. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

@@alexandersupertramp7353 "sharking" is illegal, it's unsportsmanlike conduct. You should read the entire comment and not just half of it. Corey is known for pattern racking and SVB isn't so corey had no reason to check SVB's rack other than to shark him

Look at what Shane does to the back ball. He pushes it forward at the beginning and then with slight of hand takes it away from the rack. Kind of hard to tell but he does it with his thumbs with the “last fake push the balls together” Lol he cheats a lot. Not the first time and definitely not the last.

LoL ya right buddy, that's why he wins with a ref racking too. he is racking it tight and to prove it Corey didn't say anything about the rack.

Shane's 100% right nothing more annoying than your turn at the table and your opponent has some bullshit reason to be there.

I don't see the issue with this, in the past there have been several instances of Shane supposedly manipulating the rack in such a way that he would always be able to make a ball in the corner pocket off the break, it is definitely possible to rig the rack, and I would want to check the rack too if it were me, even if he didn't have that sort of reputation maybe I'd wanna check it just in case since there's no referee to prepare the rack, why would I trust an opponent? I agree that the opponent might not like it if I were to go have a look at the rack, but if he has nothing to hide then complaining about how annoying it is for him to go check the rack is just being unprofessional and a cry baby as far as I'm concerned, he has every right to check that rack unless there's a referee to rack the balls for them.

From some of these comments, corey checking the rack was the crazy weird unbelievable behavior, not SVB quitting after one shot. Which is weird because checking the rack has been 100% normal for many years and happens all the time when there's no ref. So people should be asking themselves why svb is suddenly getting enraged by normal, common behavior. And why they're having this fanboy-like urge to trash corey when 500 other pros do exactly the same thing.

Corey is entitled to check the rack, but he waited until Shane was down for the break, and then made Shane pull up. Shane had a bad break, then got pissed. It happens. Kind of unprofessional to rake the balls from the table with your hands, even when you are conceding the entire match, but it was Shane's money to throw away. Pretty uncharacteristic for both players to be this petty.

>but he waited until Shane was down for the break, and then made Shane pull up. You're imagining things, watch the video again. Corey is out of his chair 1 second after shane put away the rack, and is checking it before shane even positions his cue ball. Shane never got down on the ball until after corey walked away. Corey didn't interrupt anything, and checked the rack as soon as he reasonably could, just after svb finishes racking.

😂 Shane gets upset at Corey a lot, he didn't even do a slow break to get on Shane's nerves. Players have the right to inspect the rack, Shane gave up why do people blame Corey? He's not breaking rules or anything.
