'Tilting' - the act of getting so angry that you lose control - is one of the biggest problem many people face when playing online multiplayer games. In this video, I share some of the mentalities I use to counter tilting to the point where, I hope, you may never tilt and lose control ever again.

This only addresses one very specific cause of tilt. A lot of people get tilted either by their teammates insulting them, the gameplay itself being (in their opinion) poorly designed, getting unlucky (from their perspective), or even their own lack of performance/improvement.
@Alba420
@Alba420 4 жыл бұрын
@@DevinDTV if you play to improve, you: -Arent playing for other people. If they insult you, and their reasons are invalid, ignore them. And if they insult you, and they have valid points, then try to improve on the issue. -Most likely enjoy the gameplay, seeing as you want to get better. Otherwise, if you don't enjoy the game you shouldn't play it. -Should understand that there may be moments of unluckiness, and those don't matter. Some unlucky situations may lower your SR, but not your improvement as a player, And -Should understand how to improve yourself. You can watch videos, watch your own replays and see where you went wrong, find a coach or even just a higher level friend, etc. Everyone is capable of improving, its just up to you to do it.

@@Alba420 Not being bothered by what others say to you is always something easier said than done. You can try and tell yourself that their opinion doesn't matter or whatever but for some people it's just not going to stop playing in their mind even if they choose not to retaliate. Words do actually hurt even if they're from a complete stranger. People aren't robots and it isn't always possible for someone to always think and act rationally even if they know deep down that persons opinion doesn't matter. Everything you've said is completely true just not so easy to follow through on.

I suffered this too. I, and a few friends, dubbed it "gaming fatigue". It seemed silly to us that we would get tired playing a game where your eyes, mouth, and fingers do all the moving while the rest of you sits relaxed in a chair. But between the mental effort required and being doped on adrenaline, it can be quite taxing. Just like you get shaky arms or legs after an intense workout, the same happens to your brain. I found that many, small game play sessions were better than long ones, overall. Long sessions are necessary, too, to build endurance. Play for an hour. Take a break and stretch your legs, hydrate, whatever. Rinse and repeat. Mix in a long form session once a day or so. The routine is personal. In the end, though, it's a metaphor of the fable "The Tortoise and the Hare". Slow and steady wins the race. You are right, you need to invest time to become good, as is true with all things in life. But you don't have to do it in sitting.

You should just play 3 rankeds a day. It would be way better for yourself. Yes, there are just three games compared to hours of rankeds, but it is healthier and it is a good way to have self control. I feel scared to play ranked because I worry about disappointing my teammates by my skill. If I play healer, I’m afraid of not saving the people I could’ve. If I play rank, I feel at fault when I am in the back line and not protecting. When I play damage, I feel responsible when my healers die and I don’t take the other teams healers out. I care about my rank but not as much as disappointing other people.

If someone isn't in your LOS and flame you, it's probably a salty genji 1 trick. Don't pay any attention to things you can't control. If you're a newer player then I recommend getting to a point where you feel confident you can help the team (maybe 1 star?) If you're worried about damage then I definitely think you need to be confident you can do something. Find a hero you enjoy, and play the hell out of them to the point you get most gold medals. The only part I disagree with is 7:31 to 8:11. I achieved diamond, felt satisfied, and never played comp again after that, because I finally got what I'd always wanted; after that I just happily played quickplay and custom games. I call this the "1 hat mindset." In TF2, I traded my ass off over a long period of time to eventually obtain a HOUWAR, a very rare and expensive hat. I told myself I'd get this 1 hat, and I did. There are no hats that I like more by a wide enough margin to justify spending insane amounts of time and effort to get them, so I'm satisfied with wearing this 1 hat 24/7 on all 9 TF2 classes, and have been satisfied with this for >5 years. Pick a clearly defined favorite/goal, work for it, and be satisfied with it. You can only wear 1 hat at a time, so don't stress yourself out trying to build up a huge collection of them; there's little point when you can only wear 1 hat. "But what if I want to swap between 3 of my faves? And maybe 4 of my faves, and maybe I should work for a 5th one too, and a 6th, and-" Because 1: that mindset is going to keep you stuck in a perpetual loop of never being satisfied with the hat you have, and 2: Just be honest with yourself and pick your 1 favorite. If you truly can't decide, then let an online random number generator decide for you or flip a coin. The point is to decide/tell yourself that you're satisfied with what you've got. Keep telling yourself that enough over time and eventually you'll really believe it and stop feeling stressed out trying to gain more in an infinite cycle.

I noticed this phenomenon in myself a few years ago. When I'm new to a game I actually have fun and enjoy it, but once I think I am decent at the game, that is when I start getting upset. I then realized I am entangling my ego with my performance, I was doing it without realizing it. I now try to focus on myself and take responsibility for my losses instead of getting defensive and blaming other things and people. I tried explaining this to my friend who tilts in the same way but since this video does a better job at explaining it, I am going to link it to him.

I’ve noticed that when you are on a team where everyone can find the humor in everything and have good comms, you may not always win, but it’s fun and most of the time while you are having fun you end up winning and playing the way you want. I just played a game where our Dva was being harassed by a Zarya and a Genji, so our mercy went to go pocket Dva and as Ana I was right behind them. The Zarya and Genji popped out from around a corner so I used Nano on Dva and we start spam healing her. As soon as the Dva seen them, she hit the rocket boosters and got the fuck out of there. We all start laughing our asses off and the rest of the team came to back up Dva and we ended up winning. I’m telling you that we laughed the whole game at that, but we were having such a good time and I can only imagine how toxic it could have been otherwise and we could have ended up losing.

I never tilt, I've just always been calm by nature, however, when people start tilting and yelling at me, I completely lose focus and start panicking and shaking and just feeling really really horrible about myself, and since I can't focus I end up playing really badly.. Luckily this doesn't happen often but when it does, I hate how easily it affects me, like someone will type one tiny thing in chat at me and I'll start feeling really scared, I stay out of ranked games because it ends up being really crippling for me. I wonder where that comes from and if others feel like this too? Also wonder what I could do to stop pissing my pants whenever someone tilts at me in games.. If I make a genuine mistake and someone is like ''wtf'', I say it was a mistake or I didn't mean it, if I'm getting yelled at for no reason other than being a scapegoat or the punching bag of the team, I will say that I am or I'll be trying my best but somehow that makes people double down and become straight up toxic towards me, it usually is accompanied by insulting my gender and then I end up feeling bad about the gender that I am. Idk, I'm too fucking sensitive I think, I really want to not care because I love playing video games so much, I try my best to think those people are just taking their deeper frustrations out on me and it's nothing personal, but it still hurts.

i used to be the same. i have trauma and it was actually extremely nervewracking and upsetting for me to hear the voices of strangers, usually men, shouting obscenities at me. like i always muted them, but in the time it took for me to afford that action in the middle of a game, the damage was already done you know ? shaking hands, tight chest, concentration blown to bits because of the uncontrollable emotional response one can have to someone showing aggression towards you.. its probably not a big surprise i didnt play much competitive. i think the only thing that helped was that i kept playing with friends and at some point, it just became easier. i still have bad days when someone yelling at me just triggers something and ruins the game for me. i dont have a solution, but whether youre just naturally sensitive, youve been bullied, you have trauma, or youre just having a bad day: theres nothing wrong with reacting to someone treating you like crap. the problem isnt people who have a issue with some sweaty loser on the other side of the screen thinking they can treat strangers whatever way they want over a video game. thats why the ongoing conversation about toxicity and tilting is happening. gaming community needs to hold players accountable for breaking very basic boundaries set for human interactions between strangers.

Accept that, and don’t just desire to have the next highest rank with no effort on your own part, and you’ll be happier.

I don't understand why some peoples who have those losing times and still having fun with the game with this stupid rank system. So I dropped all of that, I only play game to relax myself from a SH*T day of works. I prefer focusing on improving my life over climbing the stupid rank stairs covered with slippery oil that makes me fall from time to time every time I lose my stupid rank points.

Great video! One thing I would like to add is that "becoming a better player" is a great mindset, but can be quite a daunting or faceless task to think about. What I have heard from others is that the best way to go about achieving it is to set small, measurable goals. For instance, in a fighting game, you could really focus on hitting that one combo, performing a specific read, or learning the doge window for that one attack that always catches you. For a game like Overwatch, maybe it could be to hit a certain kill combo that gives you trouble, or maybe if you duo queue it could be to pull off that one team play that was always just out of reach, or maybe it could just be to hit a skill shot a certain percentage of the time. Whatever it is, make sure you can condense it into trackable progress, otherwise, it can feel meaningless and unrewarding to improve if your sr doesn't reflect it.

My problem is not actually losing. I can deal with the fact the other team is better. What I can't stand is being the only one in Voice chat, or waste 1 min of the game to regroup because temmates keep dying 1 by 1, teammates going 1vs6 and wasting their ults, going phara when the enemy team has 2 hitscans. High gold/ low plat is hell, that's why it tilts me losing SR because I'm further away from getting a decent team. PS: 3 matches in a row with a leaver in a comp game. Lost liike 70 SR, yeah, please tell me more about not getting tilted.

Dude this hits so hard I completely feel every part of that, I used to be in diamond and stopped playing for a while so I was placed in like low plat and high gold and now I just can’t win consistent games because of people leaving and refusing to communicate. No one takes one for the team and switches when needed and I can feel it starting to rub off on me. This video definitely helped me think differently, but there’s only so much I can do before I realize that playing with randoms at too low of a rank is an unclimbable hole

@@karmavijay8386 keep your head-up man you still got a lot to improve. diamond players can get out of plat in a bit over 100 games usually what you need to do is impact your WR. get that shit to 55%+. yeah you going to lose games but overall your impact will be positive and you will win over the long run

Same. I actually ended up losing 400 sr but never tilted once. I was mad at myself. Even when I only died twice every 10 minutes on support. Tank is my best role and I used to be a diamond support but I get really bad performance anxiety. The amount of losses helped since they made me play a good amount of games. I even got the sr back because I focused on my own gameplay, trying to save as much teammates while not dying. It really paid off and I actually gained more sr then when I first started AND had fun at the same time

If you are below diamond. You can carry. You aren’t doing enough and you aren’t good enough to raise your rank. Harsh but true. When you are at your current skill level you will AT LEAST lose 40% of your games no matter your performance, win 40% of games no matter your performance, and the other 20% will be on you

damn i needed this video. i didn’t know how bad my relationship was with gaming until now cuz i would get so mad at myself and i absolutely hated swearing and yelling, and my mental state and overall health started to diminish. what i got from this video was that in the time that i am heated or tilted. I need to remind and ground myself Im in control of what I get out of a video game. Dying was out of my control. Losing was out of my control. The reactions i get from other people are out of my control. The one thing i can control is how I can perceive the outcome of those things. Losing and dying, it happened i can’t change it, but i can change the way i take it. Instead of being mad, i need to calm tf down, like fr, and start saying to myself to just improve and be patient. Choosing to make yourself a better player sounds like an awesome idea cuz that makes me a better person in virtue and in behavior. k thx bye

You are a breath of fresh air. I agree. It's always been my philosophy that if my team and I play a great game but lose, I'd still be satisfied with the game. I just want to play a great game. Those are beautiful moments. The problem is, I feel like those moments are so rare. I always thought gaining ranks would help me get more of those moments...but I think I'm realizing, many of the ranks actually suffer from lack of team work, and I should just appreciate a good game when I get one...and try to see where I can improve if nothing else...

This video needs more attention because of how true it all is. Been playing basically since the game launched. Sure I may be a hardstuck Plat player, but honestly, I stopped caring about all that recently; about my rank, about my level, etc. I'm only happy to see any improvements in my performance as a player. I've actually been popping off on heroes I had rarely done so before thanks to me being more relaxed during my comp games. I don't let my ego bother me due to my rank, or 1v1 situations in games, trash talking, and so on. I'm just happy to play my best when I can.

Perfect timing!!! I played a horrible scrim yesterday in which I was lagging so badly, I couldn't even control my character. I got tilted in the first freaking map about it, and I think I dragged my team into a downward spiral after that with my mentality since I often am the one shot calling. I reflected on that and realized that I need to learn to get hold of myself in those situations, and this was a perfect video to tell me what to do - it was out of my control, and therefore I shouldn't really feel bad about getting completely destroyed by the enemy team, since that was an outlier moment in my team's performance, it's probably not going to repeat itself, so I shouldn't focus on that one time that the internet wasn't working properly. Ps, sorry for the rant, had to get it out of my system)))

Remembering that you're always learning is a great approach. When we first pick up a game, we're usually very happy even with deaths because we dont expect much of ourselves because we're "just learning." But once we become "Competent" we expect victory of ourselves and thats when tilt sets in. But, We never stop learning how to play. To maintain small goals, instead of the goal being a victory, you will more often enjoy yourself by completing the goal. So maintaining a mentality that you're attempting to improve, not win, will let you not be annoyed by losing, and the more you focus on the small goal of improving, the more you WILL improve, and then that'll actually cause a win to occur because you're playing better. Winning more often as a side effect, by improving yourself. A healthier memtality while playing, and a tangible improvment that allows victory

I play Overwatch a lot and I’ve learned that wherever I plateau, whether it’s in gold or silver or whatever, that’s where I have the most thrilling, exciting, rewarding matches of all. Because that’s where I’m meeting the best challengers at my current skill level. Learning to fight and improve at your current plateau is the key to climbing, not obsessing over being higher and getting salty because you believe you “deserve” it.

Whoa... Someone actually said that others can only control things within their control, themselves. With self realization it brings awareness that it's not about Win/Lose ratios, what everyone else is doing, and / or a demand of others as if oneself is the deciding factor in a complex competitive environment. To accept what matters to one's, adjust self values accordingly, and come to terms with what is, as well as is not, in one's immediate control. Thank you for this well spoken video
