Rigging Our Sailboat (Part 3 of 3) Sailing SV Delos Ep. 63

March, 2015- Phucket, Thailand. We work like dogs to finish up the rigging project. We make awesome progress but run into some problems with our forestay and the Ronstan pins provided. All is sorted by the awesome shop at Rolly Tasker and we move onto some other projects like fixing our AC pump and getting a new anchor chain for Delos. Finally we recycle our old rigging and get booted out of the marina with our forestay strapped to the lifelines.

Congratulations! Changing your standing rigging was a major accomplishment. Sailing long distances definitely puts people in situations where you have little choice but to be self-reliant. Staying calm and evaluating the alternative solutions usually results in finding a path forward. Duno why but i never really got on with SV Delos, preferring the smaller youtube sailing channels. Then you panned around the beautiful boats in the Royal Phuket Marina with their crisp white starched covers and highly polished hulls, before settling on the construction site Delos with your pants hanging up along the boom and i just fell in love.

I met Rolly Tasker back in 1979 after he won the Parmelia yacht race England to Fremantle Australia, I was 11 years old at the time and he was a sailing god.

Hey Brian, you might have some trouble with those pins that you had machined for the shrouds. Ideally the pin size is very near the hole size both in the shackle and the chain plate. This is important because it spreads the load over the entire face of the pin (and the sides of the plate and shackle). With an oversize hole in the shackle you are concentrating the load on the very bottom of the shackle. This can cause the metal to fatigue more rapidly. Be sure to keep a close eye on that.

the device. my uncle attended one of the visits at the university of Delft. The motor was presented in a small conference room on a table. with a pad with a hammer brought to life spinning a big fan. stopped after some time and taken apart infront of the crowd standing 1 mtr distance. Just to show there is no battery or electric motor inside. just aluminum frame. teflon blocks full of holes and in those many magnets. people could take pieces and check them out themselfe. so in my opinion it is real. this was a few years ago and I never understood why there was a big silence after this tour. i would expect devices generating free energy. and this could be the first time something like that is at the market. so we will see. great video as always. I really enjoy them. I follow multiple cruising channels but yours is by far the best. it also helps that delos is big so your crew can be larger. This also keeps it more interesting to watch. It is the perfect mix between fun. information on how to repair things and beautiful surroundings. I am a big boat lover myself and having thoughts about cruising myself too. We recently got a sweet little daughther so it will complicate a lifestyle like yours a bit but is still possible. Time will tell what will happen.

Mad respect for doing your own rigging. I must say, going up the mast and doing all maintenance in general is what scares me about living aboard a sailboat, cause I have fear of heights and zero handyman skills. But maybe that's why I should do it anyway. A new rig every ten years is more frequent replacement than I expected as well.

You guys are amazing. There is so much to know about a boat and always something to learn. It just goes to show a big job can seem daunting but when you tackle it step by step anything is possible and of course Thailand is such a great place to get stuff like this done at the right price. It's not the spreader angle to the mast that matters, it's the angle the spreader makes to the shroud wire. This should be exactly the same angle above and below the spreader, otherwise the out-of-column compression force may cause the spreader to collapse. To measure these angles, either use a protractor or (easier) just fold a sheet of paper to the top angle and then turn it over and check/compare under the spreader. Adjust the spreader until these two angles are the same.

Awesome video -thanks for that! Its really cool that Brian and Brady are MacGyver types. You can't exactly call for service in the middle of the ocean! Knowing your boat and systems that well and staying on top of maintenance, is commendable. I've been aloft a few times myself and the deck sure does look tiny from the top of the mast. I've been sailing in the SF Bay area for years and you're the first people I know that has replaced their own rigging. For the blue water sailing that you guys are doing, planned maintenance is a must. I still think that the Discovery channel should underwrite you because its such a great adventure that you're on!

Another great episode guys! I almost said video, but these really are episodes of your life. Plus they are on par with any "professionally" made TV episode. You folks have excellent instincts on editing. It all just seems to flow. I don't have a boat yet and have not made many marine equipment purchases, but I would guess it would have cost another 10k or more if you had done those projects in the states. Huge amount of work and Brady has the scar to prove it! I used to dirt bike trail ride and when I saw his leg I had flashbacks. I'd like to check into that Kombucha. What is the correct spelling? You know what actually the prices wouldn't have been that much different because all the parts are imported from over seas anyway, we probably would have saved a bit from shipping and import fees but Yacht stuff in Thailand really isn't that cheap unless it's something very labor intensive where you can save some $$ for sure. The spreaders should equally divide the angle with the shroud. That is the angle between the spreader and the shroud above it should be the same as the angle between it and the shroud below. The result is that the pressure on the spreader pushes straight down it's length to it's base and minimizes forces not aligned with the axis of the spreader.

Hey Guys, For what it's worth, Keep your eye on that Ronstan 19mm tang that you put a 16mm pin into. You set up a "Point Loading" situation. The smaller pin in a large hole only touches a small portion of the hole which will lead to cracking of the Tang. Pins should be the same size as the hole (allowing for fit) so that half the pin surface contacts half the hole surface, thereby spreading the load out over more metal. For an extreme example: Hang a Hula-Hoop on a pencil - Not much contact between the Hoop and Pencil. now hang the Hoop on a big tire - it touches a much greater surface of the Hoop. Much stronger.

Brian, You mentioned that you thought it might be neat to have a welder on your boat. I'd suggest either Lincoln 200 or the Miller Max Star 150. Get the TIG/Stick combo and use a pony bottle for the welding gas. Also get the finger control so you can adjust the power at the handle. It saves you from adjusting on the face of the welder. I just strap the welder to my back and walk where I need the weld. You can power with 240 VAC on the boat and use an extended dock electrical line. If it's calm and you can block your weld site from the wind, I use TIG. It's much cleaner. If shaky or windy, then use stick. Just make sure you keep the sticks in an air tight bag with silica or some other dessicant or else the Sticks will absorb water from the air and be useless.
