Imagine being woken up by Howler Monkeys in the middle of a man-made lake in the Panama Canal, then going for a swim in the crocodile infested waters! In part 1 of our Panama Canal mini-series we learned how the incredible locking system raises gigantic ships, and small sailboats, to 85 feet above sea level. In this video we transit Lake Gatun, a manmade mega-lake created by damn that is an engineering feet in and of itself. We investigate the decision behind creating Lake Gatun, the immense proportions of the damn that holds back the Chagres River, and the incredibly challenge of the Culebra Cut which claimed the lives of so many. At the end of the day we successfully traverse the locks back down to sea-level and end up in THE PACIFIC Ocean!

Since there are only a few dozen comments, I will make one of my own very rare comments. In 1970 I made my first Pan Canal transit. I made a few more that year and 8 the following year. I was fishing on San Diego-based tuna purse seiners in the Pacific and unloading in Puerto Rico. We had just landed a man on the moon the year before. As awe inspiring as it was to “take a huge step for mankind”, my thoughts were that it was every bit an accomplishment to build this magnificent project in the early part of that same century. As a Vietnam War vet, I was quite anti-war minded, but nonetheless prideful of what good can be done in the cause of world trade and travel. I fished commercially on large tuna boats for the remainder of the 70s and made dozens more transits through this modern world wonder, and never lost my amazement for what was accomplished between 1903 and 1914 in Panama.

You did a great job on the history and difficulty of building the Panama Canal, anything you do is top notch! I've been following you for years and you never disappoint! My wife and I and friends did that 15-20 years ago on a cruise ship that was 20 feet shorter than the locks and 4 feet narrower! We touched the side of the locks with our hands, the "donkey" operators were great. The howler monkeys were Loud! I was totally amazed at the small amount of water that seeped through the locks when they were closed! Thanks for taking us along, it was good to see how much the little nugget has grown. I hope to be able to see her grow through the years! I'm 78 and had a stroke so how much longer I'll be around is unknown, but in the mean time, I'll be watching and enjoying your videos, thanks.

This was so well done. The clips, writing, editing and narration are as good as any doc I’ve seen. Breeawn is a real educator. Not just with the facts like in this show, but in the thoughtful and patient way he teaches the crew - and us - as a captain. I fear it’s all coming to an end with the circumnavigation complete. Amazing video, Delos! I have always wondered what the Panama Canal was like, and have always been fascinated by the large ocean vessels which we sometimes saw when us "land-rats" were in ports in Europe. To see them so close up, and to live the Canal experience with you and the great crew was really mind-boggling. And, on a larger scale, a compliment to you, Kazza and Brian, for maintaining this great channel throughout the years. Every video is different, and every video is worth watching. I do not get tired of them. What I have been wondering about is when are you going to pay Europe a visit? I am sure you could meet so many Delos friends who have been following you throughout the years if you made a tour of the European coasts! Seeing you guys in the ports of, say, England, France, Holland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden would be such a blast! Perhaps Kazza will one day get so home-sick that this can become reality 🙂! I grew up on a sailboat in Shalimar, FL and had the opportunity to sail the Gulf of Mexico for many years.I'm now 46 married with two children 14 and 16. I would love to show my family the world just as you have. I grew up on a monohull but turned catamaran lover. Looking at a Lagoon 50 to start my travels located in the BVI's. Seems like a god place to start.

Captain Brian. Many congratulations on your first circumnavigation of the globe. It's just a shame that Brady couldn't have joined you for the last leg of the trip, seeing that he was with you at the start, before you crossed the Pacific. I only found Sailing SV Delos last October, whilst looking for another sailing channel to follow, having started the previous year with Sailing Doodles. Having found Delos, I then went back and started from the beginning. I have really enjoyed the way your videos have improved over the years you've been putting out content, starting with just pictures and then including the drones and the music and the various additions to the Delos Crew; especially Kiril and Lisa and more recently, Taylor. It would be great to see some of the old faces back on-board Delos, if only for a few weeks. The most enjoyable bits, have been your Underwater Photography, wherever you got the chance to film. Some very memorable moments along the way, especially your visits to the Chagos Islands; Ascension Island and St. Helena. You left Seattle a single man and returned to the Pacific a married man with a daughter. Both Karin and Sierra are a credit to you and I look forward to following all of you for many more years to come. It's just a shame you couldn't fit in a trip to Europe and the Mediterranean, especially after Sierra was born. Yes, I know Brady and Blue crossed the Atlantic on their own, whilst you and Kazza were in Sweden, but I don't consider the Canaries or Azores to be Europe. In celebration of your return to the Pacific, I'm going to 'Buy You a Beer'. In fact, several beers. Enjoy your future life and future travels. Cheers.

Okay- you guys are the coolest. I learned about the Panama Canal of course in school but honestly- never retained any of the info. I had no idea it was this complicated, or the history behind it. I also didn’t know it was one of the 7 wonders of the world either. As soon as I finished both episodes, I did my own research on the Panama Canal and learned so much! For those interested in learning more about the epic history of the canal, look up "The Path Between the Seas", by David McCullough. This canal nearly bankrupted the entire country of France before it was taken over by the United States. Even with the industrial might of the US, it was absolutely no picnic. In 2012, my wife and I, along with my in-laws transited the canal. I read McCullough's book before we went, and I am super glad I did. It made the transit SO much more meaningful. Even if you're not planning to transit the canal, the story is just incredible.

Used to fish for peacock bass in Gatun lake 1973-76. Used small open boats with 15 hp outboards. You are lucky you did not experience one of the fierce thunder storms that sweep over the lake. The 30 knot gusts can whip up 3 ft waves, with hellacious lightning. Never did see crocodiles back then.

I really enjoyed the history lesson about the Panama Canal. One interesting tid-bit is that in order to help combat Malaria a little live-bearer fish, Gambusia affinis was introduced to eat the larvae of the mosquito. By keeping the number of Malaria carrying mosquitoes down this little fish, which resembles a Guppy, was and is still largely responsible for making Panama habitable to humans.

Panama is 7 degrees above the equator. Those that do not respect the sun will soon learn what sun poisoning with terrible burns and blisters are all about. I knew many people whom said - I never get a sunburn and after 6 hours in the Panama blaster they were fried like a rock lobster XD. The Culebra cut is amazing feat of engineering. Thanks for sharing.

Made canal transit 1967 on USCGC Southwind (W-280) destination Antarctica, then West to East in 1968 back to Baltimore, MD. Still have photos and memories. Very much enjoy your adventures.having been a subscriber for more than two years. Great family, great friends along the way......
