Biggest down side of a roof top tent is.... that it anchors your car in one spot. It gets tired quick, having to pack the roof top tent away just to be able to go for a drive, then having to reset it again when u come back to camp.

Some more downsides: -Costly -Creates drag resulting in increased fuel consumption -Unclear roof rack weight load limits while off-road - Mass produced in China

I put mine on a box trailer for that exact reason

One more 'con' about the rooftop tent that was missed. It can be a hassle if you want to be mobile to go fish, get firewood, etc.. as you have to pack it all up. Then again, it may only takes minutes IF you can be bothered. I was in the high country before lockdown, sleeping in - 4degC. I was in my big daddy swag, with a tarp underneath and Aldi sleeping bag (rated to -7) and was super warm. I slept in shorts and a t-shirt. My mates in canvas tents and rated sleeping bags - not so warm :)

That's why I'm fitting the roof top tent to a box trailer

Just picked up a pop-up tent. Fastest way to set up a tent we have ever seen. We don't expect it to last a very long time but for a bit of extra space, it looks like an amazing addition to our gear. Added to our cabin tent, camper trailer and motorhome, we are all set to head off. All we need now is the time :) Good videos guys, we enjoy watching all of them.

Swag for you and your mates, rooftop for when you bring the misso, freestanding for a whole family. Simple as that.

Nice review mate! Would be good if you had of also looked into pitching site selection and what performs well when the weather turns to crap with heavy rain or strong wind or both at the same time.

Gear stans are weird. I'm a freestanding tent camper, & 2 of the reasons are that I really like having the extra living space it provides (so long as you get 1 rated to at least 20% more heads than you have to house), + that the setup/packdown - which many see as the worst part - I actually quite enjoy. But I had this guy recently passionately insisting that I _had_ to convert to a roof tent, that they're just objectively better + that there was no way that I was right about having already settled on my favourite option (or invested a lot of cash into 1s we truly love) - just ploughing through every reason + rationale I explained to him of why that wasn't for us until the only thing that _finally_ shut him up was when I eventually in exasperation snapped at him that _we don't have a car_ . And he was like "oh." And then after a moment or so, he apparently recovered + said, "Well, when you get a car-" & you could really see him starting to wind up again, ready to return to flogging the expired equine, until I cut him off with (truthfully), "1 of us is epileptic + 1 is vision-impaired. There's not going to _be_ a 'when [we get a car]', fam." And it was only then that he _finally_ let it drop, & we could move on. Like, dear Lord. It's 1 thing to enjoy your choices, + to try to spread the wealth where you can, but some people are just _exhausting_ .

Loving this series but a roof top tent is a way more expensive compared to the stand alone tent and the swag.

I use a swag generally, but as a claustrophobic human I do have panic moments when I wake in the middle of the night. Its beneficial having 4 openings helps, but also can just close mesh and have the canvas pulled back a little. Keeps the swag warm still but helps with the panic. Also can put a single swag on a camp stretcher if you want to be off the ground. Thanks for the vids. More folks camping is definitely a positive 😃

I just don't get rooftop tents , sure ok in massive rains, but what if you wanna go exploring, what if you're had too many sherberts do you really wanna go climbing latters.

Didn't touch on Awning tents mate, great middle ground and easy setup with plenty of space and the cab is still accessible with most Awning tents as well. Plus you can leave the tent pegged in and unzip from the Awning then come back in the arvo and it's as simple as roll the awning out and zip the tent up.

The other downside of a roof top tent is that you can't just drive off for a day trip etc.

Can you keep your air mattress, linen n pillows in the big daddy swag and then roll it up or do you need to remove the air mattress?

You can put the swag and standard mattress in the bag - you would need another bag for the other items.

Cheers for the Big daddy Deluxe Swag and big bag, with my side awning, wall and mesh floor it's the ultimate camping I've had since I was 12, the thick mattress, just leaving all my sleeping gear inside of it, also with a mattress topper / pad (they do have water proof ones!) you cannot feel the rocks, sticks and bumps under you at all! (May want to set it up at home in the backyard and wet it with it all closed up to soften the fabrics and check that no water gets into it! (Mine was outside for 2 days and nights in a HEAVY rain storm and mine only had the smallest amount of water inside of it some how, but when it's set up when out 4WD/camping, the 2mx2.5m awning, 1 side wall and the mesh floor = no worries, great night sleep like you're at home in your own bed!) -Love these videos! learning and loving all the improvements camping has gotten in the last 10 years! No more sandy, dirt covered, dusty, wet or smelly camping!

I have been thinking about getting a rooftop tent for a while but the biggest thing that has stopped me is that I would no longer be able to is my roof basket, which I always use for my 6 x 3 gazebo and many other items where they are forcamping or weekend use.

Can someone tell me what the weight limit for a roof top tent would be. Been thinking of getting one, but with my fat arse I’m concerned I’m going to snap the hinges on the fold out rtt’s and land on the ground in the middle of the night 🤣

Hey there, it would depend on our cars weight limit + weight of your roof rack - if you can get back to us on our cars and racks weight limit, we can let you know.

Aside from the slight leaks from the holes in the bottom corners, I agree. Took mine for a test run last night in my backyard. Top of the mattress dry as but the bottom was saturated. Found that the corners have the tiniest of holes in each.

I love my Big Daddy Deluxe. Although the mattress was a bit hard. I fixed that with a cheap bamboo mattress topper from Kmart. No issues with cold or lumpy ground. I also have a Big Daddy and Escape. I only wish they had the single Big Daddys when I bought the Escape. A family of 5, 3 swags, 2 awnings, jobs done and set up in around 10 minutes A bad day camping is better than a good day at work.
