Being a magical practitioner and mythology enthuiast living in Florida, I love that this witchy tale is based on Okeechobee folklore. No matter where it came from, however, it would still be a great yarn and the lyrics would still be poetic. Those are some of the things that really make a great song. My wife & I were married in 1972(@19&20) sose we were Hippie Dippies!! We heard a lot of Jim Stafford in his break-out year of 1974. Neither one of us can now remember hearing "Swamp Witch" more than twice. Nice graphics/good vid, TY!! My wife hated "Cow Patti", only because she worked w/ a girl, that played it on constant replay😅😅!! Karma struck, again, when our oldest daughter began dating a bum on a moped. We referred to him as a MO-PAGAN!! And be danged if Karma didn't smack us again, w/ our grandson. But, there is hope for our gr-grandson, so far, he a good child.

I thought I knew all his songs 🎵 ! Curiously, I don't remember ever hearing this song until I found this on KZbin. It's catchy and reminds me of the Legend of Boggy Swamp and the Monster Mash !Thanks for posting this one. Now I gotta find out what other lost songs he did I never heard before.

Hey thanks for a trip down memory lane. I remember hearing this as a kid. My Mother used to play the Jim Stafford albums (actually 8 tracks) and we as kids didn't know much about music. But I do remember those great songs. I especially love this tune. The lyrics are soooo enchanting. Kudo's to you and your excellent pictures to go with the song!

I remember this great song. I bought the 45. Heard it on the Big Ape out of Jacksonville FL. Very spooky song. Remember watching Jim on his summer show. Does a great Johnny Cash impersonation. The next release was Spiders and Snakes co written with David Bellamy of the Bellamy Brothers who went on to record Let Your Love Flow. 2 more singles followed My Girl Bill and Wildwood Weed. I was happy to finally get the album on cd. Nice video! Always wanted to go to Branson just once to see Jim live! Cow Patti was another song of his I love!!

I have never been in the Florida swamp, but in Louisiana, and MS'sippi swamp, it's creepy during high water, fog, when it is cold, and after dark. We had a houseboat in southern Ms'sippi, Pearl River swamp for many years. I could swear that during high water that I could see something just below the rippling water and hear the water whispering, early in the morning and right at dark. It seemed like it was whispering about or to me. It could have been just knowing how dangerous rivers and swamp are tho. I loved the river when I was young and unafraid, til I was about 45, but the older I got, I grew to dislike it

In my opinion this is one of the finest songs ever written, period. This is a story in a song. Jim Stafford does not get the recognition that he deserves. I have played this song many a time for my kids and I always tell them this song would make an excellent movie. All from a 4 minute song

Well I love Florida the best. I lived there for one whole year. If I had my choice of living any where in the US it would be Florida. I lived in an apartment that had a screened in balcony that looked out over this pond that had ducks, cranes, turtles, fish and even an aligator in it. At night I would sit out there and listen to all the night creatures singing their songs. I absolutely LOVED it!

Does anyone remember this event?? It scared me to DEATH. I was newly married and had just come home from work. I turned on the TV and the Mike Douglas Show (or some variety hour show they had in the afternoons back then) was on and Jim Stafford did this one. Mike welcomed him onto the stage and then the killed ALL the lights and had dry ice "snaking" all over the floor and Jim started into this. I'll NEVER forget that moment as long as I live. It was the most spell binding four minutes of my life!!!!!
