The 3913 was one of my dream guns growing up. I had a toy gun modeled after one that felt great in my hand, and the whole aesthetic of the real thing, along with its use by law enforcement, made it cool. I finally got one this year, a police trade in. I think that whole 3rd gen S&W automatic line was probably about the pinnacle of metal da/sa automatics, and the 3913 is my favorite, slim, compact, and comfortable. Its still a viable carry gun, and although its not my primary, I do carry it sometimes when I feel nostalgic. its always a range favorite too.

Same. I went on a hunt looking for one of these in pre-internet days. I went all over my state to various gun shops and pawn shops. I finally found one for $375.00. That particular gunshop was raided by the feds a few months later for selling to felons. I will never sell it. I carry it every once in awhile, but only because I love it so much lol.

That was my first gun. I bought it back in 1998. I had it for about 7 years before trading it and getting a Sig 226, then 229. But that pistol still brings back memories, and I get nostalgic every time I see it. A part of me regrets getting rid of it. It was a perfect conceal carry gun, with a thin profile, and a single stack mag, and reliable. I now carry a S&W M&P 2.0 9mm, I love the gun, but none of the guns I've owned since just have that feel of a 3913. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for the video, the 3rd Gen Smiths are high quality and super reliable. I carry a 3913 as my primary and sometimes my 6906 (double stack mag). These pistols also have an internal firing pin safety plunger. You can always find used parts for these pistols. Alien gear and clinger make holsters for the 6906, which will also fit the 3913.

I was in the local firearms store about eight years ago when I found mine. I picked it up and it felt right. I do carry mine often, I found several new OEM parts on Brownells site with a schematic for the entire pistol and Alien Gear Holsters has a mold for the 3913. I have been on the hunt acquiring new parts so I have a back log for the pistol but I have only had to replace the main recoil spring and magazine springs, everything else is fine. Built like a tank.

I own a near mint #3913 and absolutely love it. In my opinion the double action/single action configuration with a decocker is the ideal design for a carry handgun. I have thought about carrying this gun many times but because it is in excellent condition and continuously increasing in value and rarity I just could never bring myself to sticking it in a holster and carrying it everyday. Smith and Wesson has certainly disappointed many people (including myself) over discontinuing parts and service for these wonderful 3rd gens. I personally think this was an idiotic and inexcusable decision for this company to make!

I remember reading an article about 25 years ago that said that this model was considered the best shooter of this gen Smith auto. Mine is a 4006 which I am very happy with. It is still like new.

My very first semi-auto pistol I ever purchased was a S&W Model 39-2. I earned a lot of money in shooting local competitions with that gun. The single action trigger is easily the best trigger ever on a non-1911 pistol. I'm not a fan of the double action, but it's easily better than any striker fired pistol on the market today. I've owned it since 1974, and I've fired over 500,000 rounds through it before I semi-retired it. I no longer shoot it in competition, but it's my daughter's go to carry gun. The Model 39-2 was the gun that caused the police departments to retire their revolvers - Not the Glock - as they like to claim. Because of the 39-2's popularity among cops, S&W built the model 59 which was the double stack version. I didn't care for it that much. I concealed carried my 39-2 from 1974 until 1992 when I retired from the Army. I now carry a Kimber 1911. Back before S&W got the bad name for bowing down to the anti-gun crowd, they made some fine guns. I don't know anyone who's shot the early semi's they made and didn't fall in love with them.

In early 2020 I picked up a 1991 S&W 3913 for $400 bucks and included 3 OEM mags. The gun was rarely shot and the mags were practically new. I agree with you that parts are hard to come buy and OEM mags are expensive. But it’s a great 3rd Gen gun and I plan on carrying mine. Holsters are hard to come by also. CrossBreed, TT Gun Leather still make holster for the 3913.

I have shot so many gun over my life and the 3913 was one of the best guns of them. In fact I regretted selling mine so many years ago I just bought another. No regrets. I loved everything about it.

Great review, man. And I echo your desire for the resurrection of the 3913. Granted, I'd say the platform needs a bit of updating for the 21st century, but there's a serious gap in the market that the 3913 would expressly fill. I carry a P239 right now--also out of production, as you said. Only good thing is that the P225-A1 is nearly the same gun, so extractors, springs, barrels, mag tubes, etc are all technically still in production. So, you might consider it--the P239's grip is as thin as the 3913's, though the slide is slightly thicker. But I will say I shoot a p239 better than a 3913. Which is strange, because I shoot a 6906/04 about as good as anything. Go figure. Anyway... thanks for the review.

I just put a bid in on one, hope I get it. I literally hate plastic striker fired guns. I don't know how u can own 2 of them & not use one for carry. They're not safe Queens, they're tank tough & will shoot thousands of rounds without the need for parts changes, & spring kits are available. They are perfectly sized for carry guns & waaay safer than any Tupperware Block Glock, & look better doing it too ! If I win my bid, u can bet your Ass I'll be carrying it. Been wanting a 6906,.. but they are rare. This is my 2nd choice. I have a Smith model # 915 that Megar makes flush fit 17 round mags for. Beats the Hell out of a Glock 19, especially with 18 rounds on board. 4" barrel, just a tad bigger & heavier than a 19, but not by much. I'd put it up against a Glock 19 anyday of the week. Pray I get my 3913. Hammer fired DA/SA metal all day baby, just as God intended.

After carrying a Bunch of different striker fired pistols i looked into a single stack DA/SA pistol. Found out about the SIG p239 and the S&W 3914 also popped up. Found a 3914 in a Pawn shop and bought it. What. Great shooter! It is now my primary carry gun. The previous owner had it Magnaported and shoots very flat. Liked it so much just got a S&W 6904 . I can’t see the SIG being much better if at all.

I bought my 3914 when they first hit the market , its the only 9mm that I own that has never failed to chamber / fire a round regardless of the bullet configuration , it’s extremely reliable and use it as my carry pistol during the warm months of the year due to its narrow and compact size , colder months will bring my Colt hybrid officer model ( officers model slide/ lightweight commander receiver ) in 45 ACP out of my safe for concealed carry. I am alway in the market for another smith 3914/3913 but they are hard to find .

Similar to your experience I found a couple old St Louis PD S&W 6946s. They are 12 shot DOA versions similar in size to the 3913s (the slides and barrels were the same in dimension). The St Louis DP though ordered their guns without the mag disconnect. I like the DOA function because I am an old revolver guy. While the double stack is a bit thicker than the 3913, it's not too thick for my medium hands (I mean with the original grips -- the new Hogue grips are much thicker). When these guns were made in the 1990s they sold for $677 or so. Now that would be over $1,100!!!! These guns are very well made.

You have a pair of gems there. I have a 3913, 3914, and a 3953. All run fantastic. I removed the magazine disconnect on all of them. Not a fan . Hogue grips on each one. I did install a single sided safety/decocker on my 3914. Wish I could find one for the 3913 as well. As you stated, parts are getting scarce on these 3rd gen guns.

Excellent video and thoughtful review. I think this is the best carry gun I've ever had. And I think I've owned a couple versions of just about everything. I still have various other guns of course but this is the one I go to every day. What I like about these is the dimensions and weight are surprisingly comfortable for EDC. I mean surprisingly comfortable. My example also has an incredibly smooth trigger in both double and single action and the reset is from heaven. It fits my hand well and I have big hands. It really is comparable to the sig p225 except it's better. I disabled the magazine safety which I don't care for. And if I could make it decocker only it would be perfect. Since my primary full size pistol is a Beretta 92, this has a familiar manual of arms.

I have found parts by way of picking up older or 3913s that are listed as "Parts Only". This way, I'm getting factory parts and keep them on hand. Funny though, other than replacing springs hunting for mags, I've not needed to swap out anything... yet.

Nice review. One thing I would say is if a gun is a police trade in from the US do not assume that they have a lot of rounds through them. I have a number of former police guns from US agencies and foreign agencies and the US ones tend to have holster wear but few rounds relative to the age of the gun while overseas trade ins have a lot of both holster wear and rounds through them. Keep up the good work on these videos.

If you like the added safety of a heavier double-action pull on the first round, you could also consider double-action only pistols. Kahr makes some great ones that have a long, smooth, heavy, and crisp trigger pull. They have them in both polymer and all-steel frames.

Great guns! I have the double stack 6904 version and am looking to buy a 3913. I MUCH prefer a DA/SA hammer fired gun over a striker fired gun. For several reasons... 1. Double strike capability. You can train to adapt to the DA/SA trigger quite easily, but you CAN NOT train out your instinct to repeat an action for which you expect a certain result. If you pull the trigger and the round does not fire, you WILL pull the trigger again. Immediately, instinctively and without thinking. (same thing happens when you flip a light switch and the light doesn't come on) You may as well get some sort of function from it. Many (most) failures to fire will fire when struck a 2nd time. Very few striker fired pistols have 2nd strike capability. (Taurus G2/G3 series do) 2. You will NEVER have a problem with accidental discharge with a DA, hammer fired pistol or revolver. Unlike you, I still use and carry my 6904 (and a SIG P228). Though neither is my primary carry gun. I am retired now and live in a warm climate. It is easier to cover smaller guns...the main reason I want a 3913 !! Parts are actually fairly easy to find from sources like Numrich Arms. A lot of the 39 and 59/69 series parts are interchangeable. I have owned both the SIG and the 6904 since the late 80s. They have never had a "breakdown" of any sort.

I think you should still carry them if you want to. You got two in case parts break on one, and parts don't seem to be that hard to find used online. Hell, it's an American design from the only 20 years ago from one of the biggest company in the US, used parts should be easier to find than others. Looking on Numrich right now shows a lot of parts still in stock. It wouldn't dissuade me, especially having two of them. Great review.

I just inherited one today. It was gave to my dad many years ago when i was young. They guy who gave it to him was cheif of police at the time where im from. Anyway i have a sig p239 aswell that my dad got me for my Christmas one year. Lol. Im scared to pack either of them because of the sentimental value.

Perhaps a new 3913 version could be released that uses sheild plus magazines, maintains the same slim profile. Definately make the decocker lower profile/thinner, whether keeping the safety or making decocker only.

Unlike its boat anchor sibling, the 5906 and similar DA/SA guns of the era, the 3913 is one of the few that would be a viable carry gun today. Light and slim with a good capacity. It's the one gun of the type I would buy, if S&W started selling them again. Unfortunately, they've been out of production for 22 years. Holsters, sights and parts are hard to come by. Consequently, someone looking for a 3913 is probably better off buying the Glock 48. Which is probably the gun closest in size and slightly higher in capacity. But available with modern features like a rail and MOS capability available.

Previously owned 2 and foolishly parted with. One was a 3914LS and another 3913NL, sleek carry guns. Today I happened across a 3913 in excellent condition sans factory mags for $359 and snatched it up. One ProMag magazine included. Still a bargain for a great handgun. Factory mags for this thing are ridiculous! Will pick up a few more ProMags and call it good.

I tend to prefer the 2nd Gen. 469, which is an anodized-black, alloy-framed, 12rd Compact with the same dimensions as the 3913. The only difference between the 2nd and 3rd Generation Compact Automatics is the trigger-guard on the 2nd Gen. has a flat, serrated front on the Trigger-Guard, the Grip isn’t wrap-around (few choices of grips exist for the _69 series, but they are very easy to make if you have access to any sort of CADCAM woodworking or machining tools). The sights are a bit different, using a rectangle on the rear-sight, and a white stripe with the same height as the rectangle). And... I also prefer a blued/Parker iced black finish.

The 3913 grip feels tailor made for my hand. Always wanted one, not sure how it would be to shoot with the DA/SA vs the Star PD I used to carry, which was also a comfortable grip but not the perfection of the 3913.

If you can find a Sig P239 in 357sig you'll have not bad recoil, & enough limb blowing off power. Double/single action. Don't bother with the 9MM. You can find a 40cal. & get a 357sig barrel, same mags used for them both.

Never use grease, let alone wheel bearing,,your going to have a catastrophic failure if you do that eventually, grease is way way way to heavy in viscosity, and no gun manufacture recommendeds that. Stick with man recommendation clp is fine enough. Ive seen thick grease cause fires, it can slow down the slide to cause ftf and fte malfunctions that will get you killed never mind spmatter on everything when firing and ruining your clothes and holsters. I dont know where you read that was ok and you may have been able to get away with that for years but it's not smart. As far as not using it, its ok to do so, being an all metl gun its designed for heavy use, again your manufature knows best unless tour ysing +p+ id just keep using it you wont break it.
