People gave M Gira a lot of shit for this record ( Burning World). I liked it. I def missed the power of the Swans, but I liked that they focused on songwriting, then in the 90's he brought the power back with the quality of good songs.

I agree - I loved 'the Burning World' LP ...some had a problem with it being on a major label (MCA?) & others disliked it as it didn't sound like their 'filth' ,'Public Castration..' or their other 'industrial/unlistenable ' recordings..

@Rui Dias Everybody's entitled to have a personal opinion of his own but I like the whole album so much anyway. Some excellent songs there and the more folk-like production makes it different from any other Swans album which is another good thing for me, an advantage and not disadvantage. So different than the masterpiece "Children of God", but still very good in its own way. There are not many bands like Swans around who can do it.
@szarzyniecszczurzynski1902
@szarzyniecszczurzynski1902 2 жыл бұрын
@Rui Dias Yes, I agree, especially with that "haunting edge" thing which is exactly what I can hear, feel and truly enjoy in this album. But as I really adore Michael's work as Angels of Light, no album of that group as a whole appeals to me as much as "Burning World". I also see a kind of direction heard on "Burning World" as an essential step in Swans' career for such a masterpiece as "White Light..." to be born. And last but not least, I like to sing and I'm also a low voice type so plenty of wonderful songs for me to sing on this record:) Thank you for the exchange of views, cheers!

Heard Jarboe a month or so ago solo, with an odd drone-couple from Italy; Father Murphy. Some 30-odd people witnessed a very short concert - but she still has an awesome voice if she puts her soul into it.

@@wanneske1969 Ok, that's your impression from the shows and nothing wrong with that as for me. But I was present on over ten of her concerts within last almost 20 years period with various material and line-up (or sometimes just her solo), most of them were excellent shows (some of them amongst the best in my live - and I have seen huge amount of various live shows) and she rarely used any Swans material (let alone "a lot") - it was rather like the public often wanted more from Swans period, than she was trying "to live off her Swans legacy":) I have most of her official solo/colaboration work (and there are more "less official" records too on CDRs etc.) and I do not have any doubts how talented and musically open this woman is and what she can do with her voice. If not the live shows then I suggest to give another try to her vast recorded work and there's much to choose from, believe me. Well, I can remember she used to have some health problems in the past and that matter could also affect at least one of her shows I personally witnessed. It was unusual situation but maybe you just hit upon some wrong shows? Anyway, your first statement there above cannot be more untrue and iniquitous. And remember either, it was her who didn't even think about rejoining Swans when they came to life again... Swans belong to her past, she is The Living Jarboe now.

If it werent for Jarboe, I would have never liked the Swans. I pretty much hated all the early output-but when a friend taped "In My Garden" for me I wasnt just sold, it was life changing for me. This was right before Gira's MASTERPIECE The Burning World came out and I was blown away. Been a believer ever since, AND even changed my mind with alot of the earlier stuff. Ps Im sure live the heavy handed ind/noise stuff was awesome, just not my cup of listening at home.

Gira trying his hardest to break it into top 5 , like Depeche Mode , lol , what a " failure " ( no pun intended ) ... he should/ and is ashamed of these times, for sure , premeditatedly doing everything within his grasp to sell out ... actually took him a few years to realize where he actually belonged ... glad to see him getting back on track .

Delhi Delirium that may be accurate about the top 5. The track back is too much right and wrong, however (not to mention formalist). This period of Swans, annexed with the others, is a tribute to the artist’s exploration of the abyss, in search of truth and content. Certainly is fucking brave.

@@wanneske1969 Well, "she's not good live" is your fully authorized personal opinion and I'm ok with that but "she lives off his musical heritage" is just complete untrue and has no background in the facts at all. I wrote you about it somewhere nearby, above or below... And, to say more, I consider her solo work after (or during) Swans period as much more interesting than Michael's non-Swans projects. To make the things clear, I don't think Jarboe is, well, a better artist than MG, especially songwriter, which is untrue or that MG is overall less talented person. I fully agree he is a huge talent and totally exceptional musical personality, I'm a big fan of both of them since 1997 when I stumbled upon Swans. But how I wouldn't adore MG voice and singing I'm still sure that Jarboe owns an even better voice in terms of range, potential, musicality, abilities, flexibility, clearness and power. She is just technically far better singer knowing how to use her talent. Her voice is totally exceptional in the world of, ehm, popular music:), blending classical and rock music qualities with a huge scale and amazing flexibility. And that was my point.
