I gotta say. Every time I think you're going to miss something, you come around and make that point. I was preparing to comment on how a wet (carburated air/fuel) mixture passing through a dry (port injected) intake will lead to fuel falling out of suspension and clinging to the sides of the intake causing uncontrollable rich and lean conditions across varying cylinders. Great job. I thank you for your videos.
@gopnikcommissar7665Күн бұрын
What you mention with intake manifolds not being designed to flow air/fuel mixture, also involves the fact that if the engine backfires in a plastic manifold while filled with mixture, it will blow the intake to pieces, this happens here in argentina with cng conversions made with aspirated equipment being used in efi vehicles

The reason when one watches one of those motors with an acrylic head on it starts off with a blue flash followed by a smoky orange flame is because the vapor ignites first and then the droplets catch up as the heat from the combustion gets soaked up into them. A fully dry vapor flame would potentially be bright blue [depending on the AFR] or it might be a dull red flash, but either way, it would all burn very fast. I've diddled with dry fuel mixtures before, and while it can burn really fast, it can also detonate a lot more easily. This is why more of the high performance fuels have a lot more alcohol in them to resist that detonation.

Great stuff, Tony! I never even thought about this, since when I get into these kinds of projects I go at warp-speed and want to GET IT DONE, and don't consider anything else outside of the task at hand. Never even thought about an intake manifolds part in fuel atomization! I've converted a 2000 GMC Jimmy 4.3 V6 engine to carburetor with great success in the past. Used a pressure regulator and kept a TBI pump in the tank, and converted the ignition to HEI. That engine was never so trouble-free and fun to drive! Only lost 0.5 MPG, but gained TONS of throttle response and top-end power! Thing was an absolute blast! Pulled just as hard as my 5,800 lb. Silverado with 330HP / 360Ft. lbs. (at the crank). Started up INSTANTLY - like a 20° rotation of the crank and she lit off! Loved it, but it was a winter vehicle, so the '89 S10 Blazer that engine was in rusted away to nothing. This summer I'll be converting my 31 year old Volvo 940. It has developed an infuriating hard-start situation that requires 1/2 - full throttle to start, then I have to hold it at about 2k for 30 seconds before the other 3 cylinders light off. Whole ignition is new minus the coil, fuel filter good, new temperature sensor (for the ECU not the gauge), air filter clean, 2 cans of BG44K run through 2 tanks, throttle body cleaned, and zero vacuum leaks. Holding the throttle open when starting indicates rich - I had suspected a leaky injector ... but the problem disappears in warmer temps! Go figure! Once past the 30 second mark after cranking, it runs mint - pulls nice, idles a little high when warm, but can't be a mechanical issue with that performance (as much as can be had at 114 HP lol!!). It's a stumper!! It'll be fixed this summer with an intake manifold (These Volvo B230 redblocks are very similar to a Slant 6 in design) and a Weber 36/32 manual choke carburetor. I need this car to get me to work during winter road salt months, so I'm done troubleshooting! It's getting a carb! 😂

The spider injection assembly on the '95 up 4.3 V6 engine is ABYSMAL, whether it's CPI or MPFI. That's the system my 2000 4.3 had (MPFI). A carburetor was a MASSIVE improvement. I was using a TBI fuel pump because the vehicle the engine went into was a 1989 originally with TBI. There was no point in going through the effort to convert that engine from the spider injection to TBI - much easier to just install a carburetor, intake, and HEI.

You would have to undo the fuel lines for a mechanical fuel pump instead high pressure lines, or restrict fuel line and return line for the carb. And you have to get rid of fuel injectors and install an intake manifold for the carb. You may need to add water to gasoline to remove the ethanol and then drain the water and ethanol out to leave the gasoline floating on the top.

I learned this the hard way in the late 1980's when I changed my Type III VW from the failing fuel injection to carburetor. One of those Holly progressive two barrels. That carb/plenum sat above the engine in the middle of nothing warm held up by some nice long runners. I tried damn near everything to get heat in that plenum. I eventually went to dual carbs just to get rid of the hump in the middle of the cargo area. I guess the saving grace was that I lived in the Florida panhandle so it wasn't that bad.

UTG, I love the content and the great info. One minor thing I noticed was that you use the term "latent heat." (Heat that causes a change in state but not in temperature). In a lot of your examples of manifolds containing enough heat to vaporize fuel, that would be sensible/conductive heat. At the same time, that manifold contains enough heat energy to satisfy the latent heat of vaporization for gasoline.

I have an AMC 258 with a single plane Offy intake. It has water based heat in the carb area,and I could see that being fairly easy to do something sort of similar with (wrap some copper tubing around the area and connect coolant.) I will also say that this engine having a split port head heats its runners with the manifold too. Just a few other things to consider: 1-I had to put a 4 hole spacer on the carb I'm using otherwise its cylinders weren't distributed well and the secondaries were way lean. I'd give consideration to needing it as well. 2-I had to significantly alter the secondaries to get them rich enough on the Edelbrock carb I used. Still pending testing due to road salt but I'm at .104 right now on a 1403. 3-I don't think the single plane offy is really altogether different than say a 4.0L EFI intake. Maybe a bit of fabrication to put a 4bbl carb on. 4-Don't discount digging a 258 AMC intake up and just doing some work to fit it. Supposedly they're pretty easy to retrofit on to a 4.0L.
@paulsblocks844116 сағат бұрын
Hey tony, I'm not sure if I agree with your statement at 12:58. If you do your test by dripping some fuel when it's hot running off a port injector, you're not taking into account the cooling effect of the fuel if it were running the full course of the intake. I guess what I'm saying is the fuel will pull heat from an intake (though the process of warming up the fuel itself) if it's introduced at the throttle body. Im sure it's engine specific. Your 4.0 has an exhaust right under it, so I think that'll be more than enough to keep an intake warm, but say something like a magnum intake from a 90s era dodge could have significant cooling effects from the fuel running the full course of the intake, to the point where the intake can no longer get hot. However in this situation, if we were doing your test, running off a fuel injector could help the intake warm up since there's no fuel running though it to cool it down, and thus cause the fuel to evaporate if we just did a drop test near the throttle body. Hopefully this makes sense. I just got off a 12 hour night shift so I'm tired as hell.
@bobbyz196422 сағат бұрын
People always forget that an exhaust crossover doesn't really do much without a working manifold heat control valve. (almost always incorrectly called a "heat riser") It's that flapper in one exhaust manifold, that you'd wire open, or eliminate altogether with headers. Even if it's still there, it's rusted away or stuck by now, or the crossover is blocked with the hardest substance know to man, diamonds got nothing on that stuff. Be fun to find an electric pad to put where the "hot spot" goes, be a fun experiment. Especially here where sub zero is pretty normal.
@rcnelson21 сағат бұрын
I wired my valve open because the valve won't open otherwise and when the engine got hot it would stop running--vapor lock, I guess. But cold weather running now means an extended warm-up period.
@bobbyz196412 сағат бұрын
@rcnelson Part of the tune-up procedure back in the day was lubing the valve, Chrysler even sold a Mopar lube specifically for it. By the time I was doing tune-ups and oil changes in the 80s that was forgotten, along with checking the oil in manual steering boxes. 🤣

One Good way to go is Propane or Natural Gas, the draw back is fuel availability and a gaseous fuel takes up more of the cylinder capacity, the advantage is Propane is about 105 octane and Natural Gas is about 130 octane so a turbo really works well and the fuel is cheaper. The fuel system is not complicated to install.

I enjoy videos and articles getting performance from straight sixes,and have since I was a teen. I was surprised you were converting the FI intake to carburetor, but logically, it would work as those OHV six bangers weren’t that much different from the previous, carburetored generation I had a fuel injected Volvo 164, B30 six cylinder engine, that had a long aluminum intake runner. As the original Bosch electronic port injection was mostly a pain in the a$$ on a college student budget, I wondered if a two barrel or four barrel would work on the car but linkage would have been a major mess. Earlier models were carbureted and it would have been much simpler to buy a 71-72 head with the twin carb setup instead. Anyway, I wasn’t overly in love with the car and found something else.

Does the intake manifold gasket material need to be considered here? The heat conductivity of the intake gasket will impact the amount heat transferred to the intake manifold. For example, stock air cooled VW engines have metal intake manifold gaskets as well as exhaust heat crossovers in order to heat the exposed long runners of the stock intake manifold. Would a copper intake manifold gasket be helpful to conduct more heat to the EFI manifold when converted to carburetor usage in your instance?

If I remember correctly there are manifolds that actually have heaters to help the fuel vaporize before it gets to the valves. Correct me if I'm wrong.

A drop in pressure results in a drop in temp. There will be a fuel temp drop when it’s sprayed out of an injector. Albeit, a carburetor Venturi drops air temps significantly due to creating a low pressure area.
