Swapping out the auto primary chain adjuster for a manual adjuster on my 2014 HD ElectraGlide Part 1

In this video i drain the primary oil, remove the primary cover, remove the auto chain adjuster, fit a manual adjuster and set the chain tension, start to fit the primary cover and the usual chit chat

Nice video on installation of manual chain adjuster. I agree with you on not leaving adjuster bolt and nut installed as The customer might take bike to someone else or try and do the job them selves and for get to tighten the adjuster bolt nut and then if if backs out it will destroy the primary components. I have one comment on setting the primary chain adjustment. When you have new tensioner installed and have some tension to chain mark the clutch hub with a marker and with rear wheel off the ground and plugs removed with bike in highest gear rotate the rear wheel in 1/4 turns as indicated by mark on clutch hub mark and find the area with the tightest chain tension and make your adjustment for chain deflection at that point. Then rotate again and check chain deflection at 1/4 point intervals. As the chain rollers, compensator teeth and clutch hub teeth will wear unevenly. Not so much on low mileage motorcycles but more so as mileage goes up. That is why to chain deflection is 5/8 to 7/8 so you can find that sweet spot throughout the complete revolution of the the engine. Unknowingly adjusting the primary at area of most slack can lead to tension being to tight when rotation comes to tightest point on gear teeth. My humble opinion. Have a great day

Hi John Your humble opinion is 100% correct, i did rotate the rear wheel while I had the bike in 3rd gear to find the slack spot on the chain off camara and can't believe that I did not mention it in the video, In an earlier video when I did a primary oil change and checked the chain tension on my other ElectraGlide I did explain about finding the slackest part of the chain and why it was important, well spotted 👍👍

But it’s not the slackest part you’re supposed to be looking for. You want the “TIGHTEST” spot to be between 5/8 & 7/8 (See Baker Attitude video)

I just opened my primary because sometimes in high gear on low rpm with full acceleration i hear strange noise from the primary. Its not a waining but more a rattle... Chain is even more thight then yours... I hope its due to that and will mount the same as you did... By the way i have a 120r on, thats probably to much for that automatic system.. 😢

Thanks for a good video. May I ask where did you get that tensioner? Looks exactly like the orange screamin eagle one but probably cheaper. I have heard that style tensioner is very loud. What are your thoughts?

Hi Jordan, I bought the adjuster from hogparts in the UK, Can't remember the exact price but probably half the price of a screamin eagle one, I've only done about 4 thousand miles since fitting the adjuster but it is quieter than before, it used to make a whining noise with the auto adjuster because the chain was too tight.

6/8ths...LOL that's funny 6/8ths is 3/4 brother or 19. MM 🙂 19.05 MM to be precise, and 1 click on the torque wrench no need to click it 2, 3 or 4 times
