Hi Denise! Great video, as always. The M Graham Swatch With Me video is finally here! (I might have squealed and done a little happy dance, but I was alone so there were no witnesses.) ;-) Thank you for swatching the M Graham watercolors for us--it was so helpful to compare paints I already have with those on my wishlist--and now after watching this, some can come off my wishlist while others have been added. Isn't that how it always goes... So, terra rosa! SUCH a lovely and versatile color, right? I was playing around the other day with azo green mixes (MG--PY129) and found that azo green and terra rosa make some intriguing warm browns. I know how much you love earth tones, might be something to try when (if!) you have time. Ultramarine blue--so beautiful! Ultramarine is such a wonderful color and has become my go-to blue (along with phthalo) for most of my illustrations. Since I'm hired to do mainly children's books and (if I'm working in a whimsical style) need non-granulating colors, I've been using Schmincke's ultramarine finest, and going through it like wildfire! Thanks for mentioning the properties of M Graham's ultramarine--it might be the one I try next since Schmincke's is so hard to rewet once it dries on my tiny porcelain palette (I prefer to squeeze out little dabs straight from the tube instead of working from pans). And lastly, sepia. I was really looking forward to seeing this one, since MG is my fave brand by far and I tend to use sepia like a black when I paint in my more realistic style (mostly animals). Warm, deep, dark sepias are awesome! Currently, I'm using (and loving) Holbein's sepia. It'll last a while, but after seeing this video, I'll probably replace it with MG when the time comes. They look very similar in tone, if the color is accurate on screen. ;-) Thanks again, Denise, for all your hard work and dedication to produce quality content. It's so very appreciated!

The Perm. Alizarin Crimson is GORGEOUS, it creates such beautiful mixes and I use it to deepen my other reds and also other colors. It is so vibrant when glazed and it has a glorious place in my main palette.

So glad to get to see such a wide variety of MG colors, Denise! Regarding the Phthalo Green (YS), and Permanent Green Light, being similar to each other; would you (one day in the distant future?) be able to show us how pairs of very similar looking colors (not necessarily the same brand) compare when they are mixed with other colors. It would be interesting to see which individual color within each pair is more versatile.

Worth noting... The lightfastness issues with Prussian Blue actually are not new at all! I just read in the book Color: Travels Through the Paintbox, that the English once used to paint their homes Prussian Blue (back in the 1700s I want to say), but they stopped because the color faded so rapidly and had to be repainted within a year--even in the weak sunlight of the UK! So the Prussian Blue lightfastness debacle is a longstanding one. No professional paint should fade like that when exposed to light, and I really respect your (hard!) decision to take it off your palette for client paintings

Aldewyne yeah we've had a loooot of Prussian convos over on Instagram haha. Mine are rated as excellent but faded in a couple weeks. People claim if you keep it in a dark space it'll restore which is best, but not at all practical or reasonable imho.

The Veridian and Pthalo Green with other colors very similarly. The biggest difference is the granulation so you get some interesting varied colors because of the granulating particles. Veridian plus Indian Yellow gives some really great Sap-like and Hooker’s green-like colors. Yeah, kinda love my M. Graham watercolors. Love this video...new colors just got added to my wish list.

I know this isn't the best swatches you have of MG, but I still return to this video for reference anyway :) This time I happened to catch the brush struggles. Boy I feel you. I've experimented a lot with swatching brushes lately, and I feel a flat brush is perfect for laying down a smooth flat wash of masstone in a square; not so much on gradients though. A squirrel quill does the best gradients, but I can't get a perfect flat wash with it even on great paper. So lately I have been swatching with TWO brushes for my cards which show both a masstone and a gradient. No matter what I do though, it seems nearly impossible to get a smooth flat wash of many of my Qor paints, at least straight out of the tube.

I love using cool purples for really dark backgrounds and as a replacement for black, but while I should be realistically be using them for like, shadows, I actually really like using warm purples for shading so the darks have a pop of colour (my colouring style is no where near realistic so colourful shadows all the way)

Hi Diane, it's going to depend on where you live! Here in dry California, mine are fine to travel with, but I've heard people in more humid climates have trouble. Some colors are also more runny than others. You'll want to keep them covered when they're not in use as they will collect dust and pet hair. If you live in a humid climate and are looking for a watercolor brand that sets up a bit more, I'd recommend Daniel Smith or Da Vinci, both also US west coast brands if you happen to be semi local.

I love cool purples. I recently painted some pansies (sp) and I had started with warm purples but I don't feel they "popped" until adding some cool violet especially some granulating ones . I just love swatching. I have the PY151 in both Schmincke and M Graham. Its more opaque in Schmincke. Schmincke is semi-opaque and M Graham is semi-transparent. Its a perfect yellow leaning to neither warm nor cool and with the highest light-fast rating which is very important to me since I sell my work. It really glows through well through glazes. I never liked Prussian blue because it just looks dirty to my eye compared to the Phthalo Blues.

I think Steve Mitchell mentioned he has not had any Prussian Blue problems. Go figure. It is one of my all time favorite colors, but I don't sell my work, so, so far I keep using it. Good to know m gram is great when looking for vibrant high quality pigmented non granulating colours. Overall I prefer non granulating although I’m thinking of getting a few granulating options to try out. That maroon peryl. Looks nice and different I may look into getting that one specifically. The cobalt is always a concern eco wise and toxicity overall. Great video overall good to see for purchasing options. I hear m gram has good batch consistency and very high overall quality. Also thanks for listing which you find more granulating. Good to know Prussian blue may have lightfastness issues. The more I learn the more I use the most lightfast for originals for sale. I also make non lightfast works in sketchbooks or for photographing/scanning or just for world notes so it is not the only factor just good to know. I really do like the cobalt teal... I may look into the anthra.blue. I always pre wet my veridian I think it is a bit harder to work with, glad to know it’s not just in my imagination. I use the veridian for foliage colour variety. Mid and deep tone leaves most often. Still looking for a great burn’t sienna I can use and be perfectly happy with, I think I’m looking for a more reddish one than this. Maybe the quin rust is more what I’m looking for from this line. Anyway great video thanks.

Actually toxicity with cobalts is not really much concern. They have the same safety rating as Quinacridone Magenta (potentially mildly irritating).
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 6 жыл бұрын
raosprid cobalts also environmentaland ethical concern with the way that they are produced.
@raosprid
@raosprid 6 жыл бұрын
That's true. While we've gotten better at handling pollution, it's still a concern -- even if any impact due to artists' materials is virtually nonexistent. Unfortunately there are pollution concerns with most pigments, including the so-called "safe" ones. Not to mention these modern organic pigments are synthesized from coal tar and petroleum distillates (and therefore tied to the coal and oil industries). Just because a pigment is perceived as safer for us doesn't mean it is, nor does it mean there aren't serious environmental concerns. Just look at the environmental disasters occurring in India and China involving the very dyes that are processed to make our "safe" pigments! While I think we've still got a long way to go, at least companies in the west have improved dramatically and generally aim to prevent pollution. Most pollution occurs in the 3rd world where there is much less concern for the environment. I'm sure you'll agree with me that we must demand our companies seek pigments from ecologically responsible sources, even though that likely means paying a little more. I'd think it much better to use a responsibly produced cobalt blue than an irresponsibly produced phthalo blue that's causing heavy-metal pollution. Fortunately many artists' materials manufacturers seem to care about these issues (such as M. Graham and Daniel Smith).

I have recently begun working with the M.Graham watercolors. In fact I can attest that the Prussian Blue doesn’t ever really fully dry; I had it in a set of half pans I’d poured sitting by me while I worked yesterday and my little dog (Bambi’s a 7.5 lbs Italian Greyhuahua) decided she NEEDED snuggles and stepped in the Prussian blue on the open palette while trying to get into my lap and ended up staining out couch with a deep blue paw print. There was NO getting the color totally out of the mauve canvas fabric.

Speaking of cobalt pigments, I wonder if pv49 will get a replacement. It is an annoying pigment to use, even aside from the cobalt aspect. But there it is on the handprint chart, a total outlier - ha ha. I looked at Daniel Smith PV55 recently, but couldn't tell if it could be moved close to pg49 hue / chroma or not.

This was really helpful to me! I was debating adding Napthol Red, but I have Pyrrol Red and now I feel I don't need both. Same thing with the T. Red Iron Oxide and Quin. Rust- now I don't feel like I should get both. I'm glad I'm not alone with the weirdness of T. Yellow Iron Oxide- I like painting toads and it is good for that, but I wasn't sure what else to do with it. I decided tonight to see what mixes it makes and it does make some nice greens! Maybe I'll post a pic of the mixes on the patreon community tab if it would be of any interest.

Sorry for the delay Katy, but sure! I'd love to see what you came up with for the mixing. It cracked me up when I audibly reacted to it. I can see it being useful for toads for sure, but otherwise, it's such an odd duck! Thanks so much for your contribution

Hi Denise, I have a question. Does your M.Graham smells really bad? My ultramarine blue, green gold, and phthalo turquoise smells like a rotten age T_T I don't know why. And I can't really stand the smell. Even when I use it on my painting I can still smell it from the paper. I love love how M.Graham water color behave, the color intensity, and even how it flows on wet paper. How did you store your M.Graham? thank you Denise!

My M. Graham palette has a sweet, a sort of honey-ish, smell whenever I open it. The smell comes from the binder, but it goes away after 5 minutes of letting the palette air out.

I have viridian in my main palette, and I find it so interesting as a M. Graham paint. All of the M. Graham paints on the palette remained sticky, except for this one. It's hard to the touch, and I can even rub my finger on it without picking up any paint. It's even more hard than the Daniel Smith paints on my palette. I know viridian is a notorious color for being hard to re-wet, but it's so strange considering the honey in the paints. Great relaxing video!
@InLiquidColor

Scarlet Pen viridian is a veryyy hard paint. DSs version is soooo hard to rewet so by comparison the MGraham color at least still lifts. It's just a property of that pigment :)

This is good to know. I was wondering about MGraham's viridian, since the other colors stay sticky. I guess I'll skip that one.

Stacy, you can see in the video I had no trouble rewetting it even though it's harder than the others. It behaves like many other brands normal colors.

MGraham make my favorite watercolors. They're so creamy and vibrant, and they keep in the palette and rewet just as nicely as QoR. There's a lot less variation between the consistency of colors in MG than, say Daniel Smith.

Hi Denise! I am loving this Swatch with Me! I am a M. Graham devotee for any pigment that I can get from them over another manufacturer. I started my palette with a Cad Red and a Cad Yellow, and now also have a Cad Orange. I am starting to consider moving away from Cads due to toxicity concerns, and I have a couple questions: 1) Which M. Graham pigments would you suggest as a replacement for each of the Cads? (Although I believe I'm already convinced of Scarlet Pyrrol as my Cad Orange replacement since it's the brilliance and almost neon quality of each of them that attracts me.) and 2) Do you have suggestions for safe disposal of Cad or other toxic pigments? Thanks so much for all of your dedicated work! I am so grateful for everything that I've learned from your videos!
@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kayla, sorry for the late reply. I like PR254 for a strong mid valued red and PY154 is a good solid yellow. I let my pigment settle in the water container, then pour off the water, and wipe out the settled pigment with a tissue. It's not perfect throwing them away, but better I think than pouring them into our water system.

@@InLiquidColor No worries at all! Thank you for your response. I think that sounds like a great way to dispose of paints with toxic pigments! I'll be adopting that habit at once! Can anyone tell me if their M Graham paints have any peculiar scents? I just got some watercolors from the M Graham line and the Yellow Ochre smells like burnt caramel made with spoilt milk. The Nickel Quin Gold I got also smells a bit like burnt caramel, but the scent isn't as heavy as the Yellow Ochre. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the pigments used, or if I just happened to get a bad batch. Please help.

I have a palette dedicated to just M. Graham paints that I have been using for a while. Whenever I open it, it has a sort of honey-ish and berry smell. I leave the palette open for 5 minutes for the smell to air out before I paint. I personally enjoy the smell, but I wouldn't dare take it outside.
