I was literally going to mention how frustrating it is that brands don't include pigment information on their dots cards before you brought it up. It doesn't make sense to me why such important information would be left out so easily across many brands.

I got spoiled when I took a watercoloring class in college. We only used W&N professional watercolors. I've tried other brands because they are cheaper and still use those cheaper brands when I am just doing inks & washes or messing around in my art journal, but when I do a painting that I plan on giving away as a gift, I always go back to W&N. The colors are just brilliant and beautiful. I've been slowly building up my W&N supplies, purchasing a few tubes every month. I hope to have at least one tube of every color sometime soon. They really are - imho - the best watercolors.

Yeah it's good. It's not really that expensive cus they last so long. And you don't really need that many when you get used to mixing (which is fun anyways) Also you can save by saving up dried paint from tubes or the pan and put in small boxes with water. I think many just throw it.

Man, I love the sound of thunder! Thanks for leaving that in (: We had stop and start thunderstorms in the tristate area also and it was just wonderful for painting. Also my favorite watercolors are Cobalt Teal by Qor and Permanent Rose Quinacridone by DaVinci. I do love a good, bold Opera / Opera Rose in any brand! ^^

I don't know why but the footage of you scrubbing that viridian dot with the melancholic music gave me a laugh! I really enjoy cobalt greens even though I don't use them often. They look soft and fluffy on their own. Thank you for this video, not only was it very relaxing and enjoyable but it's a great reference!

Swatches of colors are always so soothing to look at, and I really enjoy yours. They go well with your video personality: calm and relaxing. ⭐ I don't own a lot of watercolors, but my favorite ones probably are a color combo: the turquoise green and opera rose both by Sennelier. They are very interesting colors, and when mixed they give really special properties and hues. If you never tried them together, I would love to see what you could create with this duo. When only a bit are mixed, they give some kind of cold greyish and purply tone, and they don't really "stick" together. It's almost like they granulate, but not really... I don't know how to explain it well, but I really like their effect. ^^

I’ve been curious about Winsor and Newtons professional watercolors since your last video! My best friend has been looking to upgrade for a while so I bought a few smaller tubes to help him out! I have to agree with you on the cadmium reds, they’re very lovely! 😍 Hope everything goes well with you as well, best wishes!

My guess is that they have the paper for the dot cards make up in a huge batch ahead of time, and by not including pigment info, it insures that they don't have to make any corrections if they have to make a formula change before they've used them all up (aka, a stack they had printed up before Quin Gold got discontinued wouldn't have to be corrected or thrown out when they had to use a different pigment for that color.) It's kind of a PIA tho, especially since you don't know when the dots were placed so if there WAS a pigment change, you won't know if you have the new or old...

Thank you for swatching! My recent favorites... Winsor Yellow, Permanent Rose & Burnt Umber (Winsor & Newton). Winsor & Newton's Burnt Umber is great for earthy pinks and to mix green. A new happy discovery this year was Naples Yellow by Lukas and Cobalt Blue by Rembrandt.

Advice for when you try do cards: first with a dropper place one drop of water on top of the dot so you don't need to insist with your brush to reactivate the paint. To avoid contamination between colors paint one dot and skip the next, then when you have one half of the dots tested leave them to dry completely, and then proceed to test the remaining half.

Hi there…..your camera angle is the best amongst all other swatch videos. Yesterday I swatched a few dots from the Daniel smith dot card. Was surprised that there are so many colours that are not single pigment. And today I researched pigment info of Windsor newton from their website and realised I prefer the pigments they use…..so I’m looking to buy a few of them and came to KZbin to look at a few swatch videos….and bam!here you are …..I trust ur info over others coz I like your work…..most others are just…swatchers …..so, thanks!

Very informative, and relaxing! Planning a trip to my regular bricks-and-mortar art shop next week, the first time in over a year. I have a decent shopping list and W&N watercolours are at the top. The timing of this video is very convenient. I was eager to try winsor green yellow shade, but man, your swatch is a _lot_ more blue than W&N's own online swatch! I might focus a bit more on the sap green.

I love the Permanent Mauve. Jean Lursson recommended it on her channel and i bought it based on her recommendation - it granulates so beautifully. And the W&N Potters Pink is the only Potters Pink I've tried that is easy to rewet. I've tried Daniel Smith, Turner, and a couple other brands, wondering why everyone liked this color so much - they were all thin, streaky and impossible to rewet. I have admit i love it now.

AAh, the way those purples and blues spread in the water is so magical to look at! And can we talk about how your camera just cannot handle the quin rose? The saturated paint in the water looked almost like a neon pink! Very magical to look at I personally reeeally love Schmincke paints, most of which their Indigo and carmine, but lately the White nights indigo's more blue tone and the fantastic slate it can mix with their sepia has kept me with that palette! But I go through SO MUCH ultramarine no matter which paints I'm using!

I hope your husband is recovering well! I think out of all these swatches, I'm most impressed with the cobalts, which seem to rewet remarkably well and have good color payoff. I think I will add the cobalt violet and the cerulean red shade to my wishlist.

Late to this party but had to share… absolute favorites (though seldom mentioned) - Light Red (PR102), Cobalt Turquoise Light (PG50), Potters Pink (PR233), Rose Dore (PY97, PV19), Aqua Green (Phthalo.)… many of these are unique colors not found in other brands. The Light Red is incredibly smooth yet textured at the same time. ❤️

My favorite colors in general tend to go towards cooler tones, especially violets. I find purples the hardest to work with though. I don't know if had something to do with pigments (my favorite set doesn't include pigment information) and they tend to granulate too much when I don't want them to. Are there any purples you can recommend that don't do that?

I inherited some really old tubes of w&n professional watercolours. Beautiful, even when 25yrs old. I've since added quire a few. Love all of them really. Their raw umber is different to other brands but it fills a unique spot for me. Cobalt violet, potters pink, the cobalts., the perylenes,... all wonderful. Burnt umber with some brown madder great for figure studies. Yeah I like em. :D

One of my favorite parts of swatching videos is hearing the artist talk about the colors, like you started to do with the cadmium reds. Perhaps if you do another swatching video in the future, you might consider doing this? I know it's longer, but I'm sure most of us will gladly watch every minute! As for favorites, I went from focusing on bright jewel tones to ones with a lot of "character" ... Be it granulation, sedimentation, or uniqueness. Especially amongst earth tones. A recent discovery is Gilsonite from PoemsAboutYou handmade watercolor... I've never seen that texture from any other pigment or brand! It's like marbled tree bark. Also, Roman Szmal's PB36 and Schmincke's PG26 in mixes.

I agree. W&N do very few travel sets in their professional range. The ones they do art called a field box or sketchers box and come in black tins. If your set is in a white plastic palette it is the cotmans range - their students quality set. The pans tend to be a bit chalky. The cotman tubes are a bit better.

1st Oct 2022 W&N only have 108 professional watercolours available now - I think Aureolin has been ditched, but I'm waiting for confirmation from the company. Also, there are only 107 colours available as half pans. Cadmium free red deep is only available as some tubes. However, there is still some stock of the 109 colour dot cards available on their UK website at least! Confusing. I don't know why pigment information is not available. It would be useful!

I love the close up view. It's so pretty and satisfying. But I think there's something wrong with your camera setting since most lemons and yellows look orange-ish to me. My reference points are Aureolin and Transparent Yellow. I used them as border between cool and warm yellows; both look warm in this video.

@@mald379 yeah well did buy the DS dotcard too and you can literally use the dots for watercolor drawings a few times like i did😅 but only because it was really... really expensive at that time and the first time i did pay for a dotcard... and there was so much on it it felt really wasted otherwise😅 Well if the W&N dotcard isnt expensive i think its ok as long as you can do and use it for what you originally did buy it😁 as dot card😅

Yes, the viridian and potter's pink looked a little difficult to rewet. I have their potter's pink in a pan and it's easy to rewet. Most of the other W&N professional watercolors that I own though came in a tube and I dried them myself, and honestly, none have been giving me any trouble.
