I think that you are going to love working in the Strathmore 500 Mixed Media Journal. I’ve tried a lot of different sketchbooks, and I haven’t found one with paper as nice as this one. It’s 100% cotton and handles all wet media extremely well for 90lb paper! I can even layer watercolor and it doesn’t pill, and my acrylic pages make me want to stop using canvas panels. I also love how my color pencils and Neocolor 2 look on this paper. The tooth is just right for my drawing media. You can also buy the 500 Mixed Media paper in sheets (90lb or 140lb) and rolls (90lb). I’m looking forward to seeing your work on it and hearing your thoughts!

Alright, you've convinced me- Turners will be my big art supply purchase if I decide to get into Acryla Gouache. I'm really loving those "light" pastel colors omg not having to mix a cute pastel. I'm also really interested to see exactly how you maintain your brushes during painting and after painting using Acryla Gouache if you even feel like making a nice video for us beginners/acrylic paint newbs. Thanks for swatching your purchase as always!

I have had this set a few years and love it. The colours are very harmonious together but lively as well. I bought some tiny containers with tight fitting lids as you can dilute them down quite well, with water and /or a touch of retarder. They kept very well for ages like this and I was able to stir them with a small old brush to get a good consistency. They are absolutely great to get very fine layers for instance to make gauzy or misty effects with some overlaid transparency. With the lovely range of pale lights and deep darks I have not used much white, if I wanted a tube I think I would order it direct from Japan rather than faff about waiting for it here, the last thing I ordered from there came super quick, websites here we still giving long delivery estimates, but that was earlier this year. Even very diluted they seemed to have a lot of adherence and the paint film seemed quite strong, the retarder plus water also acted as a thinner, making me more secure in how I use them. Would love to know whether the surface of Turners regular acrylic gouache works well with the Japonesque colours or if it is less matte/more shiny…

I remember being rather bemused by the colour names when I started using Turner's acryl gouache. Eg, "pale green", "light green", and "green light" are all different colours, and there are two distinct colours called "grayish purple", etc. A little more imagination in naming wouldn't go amiss! 😃 But I do enjoy working with them! I do fine lines and details so the rougher Japanesque paints aren't always the best for that though. Don't know if you have a "sta-wet" palette but it works wonders for the fast-drying acrylic gouache paints.
@NatashaNewtonArt
@NatashaNewtonArt 2 жыл бұрын
Ha, that's funny! :) I tend to spritz my Holbein acrylic gouache with a little water on the palette and it seems to work well, keeping it wet for long enough for me to use it, but stay-wet palettes are a great idea.

This is a great set of colours,and it's great you could create smaller sets of colours from the set. I deciced to take the plunge and order a set! the metallics were what decided it for me,I loved the colours in those nine paints (as you know I love metallics) but that set of nine colours really appealed to me. The regular colours also to me have some retro looking colours too which I like. I will use them for the 'Huevember' challenge next month.I agree that overall the colours in this set do make a versatile working palette.I love that they come in the smart black boxes too that also appealed to me.I think the fact they have a slight texture will make them great for mixed media work too I think this is a good mixing set too. Natasha have you actually done any painting in this medium yet ? Its okay to swatch but in answer to your question it is easier to make that choice once you see how the medium is on a picture.

I have! I use it all the time and combine it with my Holbein acrylic gouache too. It's one of the mediums I use most often in my work. You can see examples of some of my work on my website and Instagram (there are links in the description underneath the video). Hope that helps!

Natasha, it's not Jackson's fault about the supply issues - it's a combination of consequences of Brexit, Covid and the massive shortage of drivers. It's also obviously not just art supplies, either. ☹️

I know, I'm not blaming them! They can't help the difficult conditions at the moment. And we've noticed the same thing at the supermarket too.
