One thing to be aware of… I replaced mine but I’d DIDN'T TIGHTEN THEM ENOUGH! Over time I began to notice an unusual ‘rattling’ whenever I drive over bumps or potholes. On hand inspection, there was still some amount of ‘play’ in the sway bars. I tightened them up a bit to the point where the bushings became ever so slightly squashed. That was exactly what was needed. No more rattles! No need to overtighten, but don’t be scared to lock them down a bit, so that you see the bushings start to begin ‘bulging out’. ’ Great video. Good tips on turning the wheels to allow access to either side.

My sister just bought an 02 Explorer, and I can move the sway bar easily because the bushing are just gone. They don't exist anymore. Going to try putting them on today with my limited toolset. Thanks for the video. Simplified the job.

I ended up here after using your video for changing the front upper ball joints on my '02 XLT. While doing that this past weekend, I noticed that both my sway bar links were hanging low and loose. When I looked closer, two out of four bushings were missing on one side and three out of four bushings were missing on the other! I wonder how long I've been driving around like this. I'll be using this video next weekend after getting new sway bar links. I appreciate all your detailed videos!

It looks real good other than that. Probably just a bunch of small stuff. I have one with the 4.0 and 210,000 miles on it and climbing. My daily driver. The front end seems to go to crap on this things other than that I love it.

Excellent, however you completely compressed the bushings which will prevent them working properly. They should only be snugged. When I replaced mine the factory mechanic had made the same mistake.

You MUST somewhat compress the bushings., or the link will rattle to no end, FYI. Agree that over compressing is to be avoided or will result in early bushing failure.

whew thats a lot of rust. i live in bama, theres no way in hell id buy something with that much rust underneath it. as soon as i see that, i know it came from the north and im not about to buy it. i didnt have to take my wheels off to replace the sway bar links, but i did need a grinder to get the old one out. my front bumper is already off so i just did it as it sat there.

what was the point of this other than replacement? I have an 04 explorer that feels like the rear end is moving back and forth at higher speeds. Extremely dangerous to drive. I have replaced the upper ball joints but didnt seem to fix the issue. Any suggestions would be awesome! thanks!

I have a question because im trying to do this same repair... I understand that you took the front wheels off for video purposes... Would this repair be the same if i keep the wheels on? Or what if i used ramps instead of jack stands so that i can be comfortably under the vehicle...
@danielbutler3933
@danielbutler3933 4 жыл бұрын
Because on both sides of my vehicle the top ends of the links have both snapped off so my sway bar is already free arming... Like i can literally go underneath the vehicle and move the sway bar as you were once both bolts broke
@atoiler1389
@atoiler1389 11 ай бұрын
Try it without using ramps or jacks. You should be able to do it as the sway bar itself will be fairly moveable. @@danielbutler3933

FYI they're called stabilizer links. Also you use a cutoff wheel on the grinder. When giving information make it accurate. Also cut your stabilizer links in the middle for god sakes. Come on man
