Ahahah B1M is forgiven ❤ …as all of us Nordic people look and sound the same to outsiders. We’re basically the East Asians of white people. I think our countries are each so individually insignificant and collectively homogenous that it’s not realistic to assume people will treat us as any other than a collective in their minds, if they even give us that much. Our current national borders and separate national identities are all so arbitrary. We’ve been trading sovereignty of each other backwards and forwards through various “Kingdoms of X & Y” combinations for well over a thousand years. That we’ve landed as the current separate nations (…at least, for now) is mostly a fluke of timing. But the rest of the world wouldn’t notice or care if all or some of us joined together. Or split further. Or… whatever. Bring an unlabelled world map when you go travelling internationally and ask locals that you meet if they can point out your country on the map. It’s an eye-opening experience. And I’m not talking about doing this in the third world either. anyway…

Considering there’s been nothing but suburbs built in Gothenburg for the past 100 years, I’ll believe it when I see it. Gothenburg is definitely a rapidly growing city. I was there 3 years ago and so many new towers have popped up all over the city since then. Karlatornet, which is going to be 245 meters tall, will be the tallest skyscraper in Scandinavia. It looks very impressive already! However, there are also downsides to these rapid developments. It looks like the city is selling its soul to investors. Many newly constructed buildings really feel out of place and have very little respect for the surrounding areas. Scandic Gothenburg Central really is an eyesore. An ugly glass box that can't be unseen. The same counts for Hotel Draken, which is located next to the beautiful old parts of Haga. Hotel Draken and the surrounding newly constructed towers really don't fit there. Hotel Draken feels a bit like Gothenburg's own version of Tour Montparnasse. The city really needs to step up the game and focus building a coherent, good looking city. Some experts need to oversee all the big projects and make sure they fit in better. Quality over quantity. The same counts for newly constructed apartments, many of them look really bland and cheap. Gothenburg can do so much better, really! Don't get me wrong: I do love Gothenburg!

Very good video indeed. Malmö - Sweden’s third city - has also gone through an amazing transformation - with a focus on sustainability. I think it would be a very good subject for a future video. Warm welcome.
I was thinking about buying a pre-fab house from one of the Scandinavian companies that produce them. It's really cool, you can choose among many designs and the building is very fast.
You can't compare Gothenburg to London or Toronto. Scandivavia as a whole only has 1 official skyscraper (>150 m). Thats for denmark sweden, norway and finland. Toronto (1 city) has 80. These cities are naturally not plagued by the same issues of affordable housing as places like toronto or new york.

Grew up in Gothenburg. It was very cool to see this video and recognize landmarks from my childhood - Fiskekyrkan at 0:21, the Poseidon statue at 7:00-7:05, and Ullevi stadium behind the new building - and not transformed beyond recognition by skyscrapers and urban decay. But I do remember the insane scramble to move into an apartment that was large enough for two, and later three kids - from a studio apartment where my parents slept on a foldout couch in the living room and my sister and I shared a bunkbed in the hallway, to a 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom place near Avenyen and the old opera house. A great city for walking in.

Fantastic vid as always, especially as GBG's been my home for 8 years. Bit surprised not mentioning Karlatornet given it's gonna seriously tower over CityGate, but hopefully that means you'll be back to cover that! Love all the investment and cool construction around Gothenburg - less keen on all the works causing the roads to move around like the staircase at Hogwarts!
Don’t forget that Gothenburg is widely known as a being a nightmare to visit with car from out of town because of all the construction 😂

Easy answer - don't use your car in the city use the trams and buses to get around. Much easier, and less pollution in the atmosphere! Because that's what I did on my three visits to the city before, during and after H-day!

@@rodneymcgovern5984 Pretty shitty excuse if you ask me..^^ If you’re traveling from someplace else in Sweden by car, or happen to pass through, it shouldn’t be needed. Not trying to start an argument, just casually observing that one of the drawbacks of all this construction is the high frequency of closed off roads, which also happen to effect bus routes btw.

@@shagstroem Cares have no right to be in cities. Honestly just park your car outside the city and use public transport. Much better for everyone.

Gothenburg must be one of the coolest sounding city names in the world 😎

The actual city name is Göteborg. Gothenburg is just the English version of it. Personally, Helsingborg takes the win for best city name in my book.

I can tell you from someone who lives here, everything is delayed, traffic is at a standstill from 15.30 to 18.00, everything is funded through congestion charges and they have already blown through that budget. It's a small city in the sense that you can drive around the city center in 20 minutes (at night). Its a love hate relationship for me. I don't want to live anywhere else! 😁

if there's that much congestion, maybe the congestion pricing is too low?
@Freakyjohnsson12 жыл бұрын
@@magnusdagbro8226 I think Göteborg needs to improve cycling infrastructure. Honestly driving in Göteborg is terrible, exepensive, few parking spaces, slow speeds, few lanes for cars. Honestly suprised that people choose to drive in Göteborg.

@@Freakyjohnsson1 I think it’s because of the geography as Gothenburg is very hilly.
@Freakyjohnsson12 жыл бұрын
@@yazanmowed Sure it's hilly, but I still think Göteborg really really needs to improve it's cycling network. They do have plans for imrpoving cycling in the city but it's moving somewhat slowly. But honesly travling right now in Göteborg is chaos since it's construction everywhere.

Sweden = World wide leader in breaking down building into many small and easy to manufacturer pieces that can be assembled on sight much faster than conventional means. Also Sweden = makes IKEA (same basic concept but with furniture)
