The Saab AJ37 Viggen was developed from late 1950s to late 1960s and entered service in 1971. It became and remained the most advanced fighter jet in Europe up until 1981, when the Panavia Tornado took that spot. Funnily enough, its main role wasn't even to be a fighter, but an attacker and strike aircraft. It's not bad when you have a British Jaguar pilot with you in the cockpit and he's says "OH DEAR GOD!" when you turn on the afterburner at 600km/h at low altitude. The pilot who took this British pilot for a joyride is a retired bloke who was a professional roadracer by the name of Peter Lindén.

The D variant improves on all that the C variant lacks You go up to 360 Countermeasures from 48 The Aim-9Js get upgraded to the Aim-9L You carry more fuel even without the Drop tank, you go up from 48min to 57min Sure the Viggen is not the best jet at top tier but it's very solid

I asked a big guy from forums and he told me the biggest BS excuse for that (dont hate the guy, he is just a poor massager for Gaijin) and he said: "Giving it (JA37C) AIM-9L just means it will need to move up and open a massive gap. (I guess between over-tiered J35D and 37C). The JA37D negates the need for that and provides some more options. 37C can stay where it is and remain comfortable with what it has."

my cousin flew this jet in real life, in the spaning/jakt role (spy/attack). 4 planes would patrol together, 2 designated as spy and 2 as attack and the pilots wanted to be in the ones tagged spies because they had a habit of provoking the soviet airbases by the baltic into sending up SU-15 and MIG-23. They would then engage in "dogfights" with these planes, which obviously didnt result in kills but it was rather all about maneuvering etc to see who would have won. the SH37 would very easily beat the SU15, the MIG23 was a bit more of a challenge but it was also beaten quite handily. when it comes to the F16 it was harder to get chances for these improvised dogfights as generally it was not allowed, however sometimes pilots from different countries basically made "dates" on where to meet and then they tested each other out. the f16 was a superior plane to the SH37 and the only thing the SH37 had an advantage in was the halfroll which meant there were ways to beat them but you had the odds heavily stacked against you. so if anyone is interested in real world performance of the Viggen pilots had a very easy time outperforming MIG23 and SU15s but the F16 was a better dogfighter that only the best viggen pilots could beat by using the one advantage the viggen had. the energy bleed stats this airframe has in the game are nowhere close to realistic, viggen preserved energy in turns better than the MIG23 and the SU15 did.

Play the viggen with the Gyro_Sight turned on from options->air battle settings (its near the bottom). It helps so much!! He says it doesn't but I've gotten insane head on kills with it that I never would've gotten before, and some pretty insane moments with it that I shouldn't have been able to pull off, but I could with it turned on. It's not for everyone because it takes a certain amount of context and a little bit of thinking outside the box to make it click in your brain(it's more of an inertia calculator, but it sways a ton)

@@NineSeptims yeah but the repair cost are fucking miserable.. 12k STOCK... because gaijin "balances" with repair cost, if i had millions of lions i woudve been done, but when i only make a 2k profit if i do well and lose 15k if i dont, it takes a little while, and it still takes a long time to grind out each 300k rp plane, while yes the tree is faster than otehrs by miles, I just dont have the mindset i used to have when getting top tier jets in germany (ive the mig 19 and i think one of the mig21s when supersonic was introduced to the game at rank 6) but its slow and painful with max 10k rp a game, assuming i win, and get 2 kills. and thats with premium time

what do you think, should have gaijin added the gripen instead of this viggen. As far as i know the earliest gripen that is JAS39A had an identical loadout as the JA37D. Aim9Ls and just like the 37D it could carry the AMRAAM which hasnt made its way into the game yet. I think adding the 37D was just a lazy move from the snail. Though im not so familiar if the gripens flight performance would be too strong.

This plane is good imo. Is it the best? No. Is it bad? Far from it. Decent flight performance so long as you know how to not bleed all of your speed. You should’ve learned that from the draken anyway. Flares out the wazoo and the meme-9L combined with decent top speed at low alt plus high aoa potential make for an all round good plane.

It's such a shame the JA 37D is a copy paste of the C, the exterior model is lacking features that makes it the D. The cockpit is also copy paste, they didn't even bother to make the D's cockpit (Will be updated later I guess). Also it's *really* funny that the D we have in game has everything the C could carry (IRL). The JA 37D is completely rushed and only exists to sell the J 35XS. Lame Gaijin, lame...

The F-16 is overhyped imo. It cant turn for shit unless you slow down which you for obvious reasons dont wanna do. Mig29 is arguably the best new plane that is rank 8 but it still falls short because of its r60's which in todays meta.. are a bit shit. Theyre good missiles dont get me wrong, but theyre so easily flared that anyone with a braincell can dodge it. This viggen imo is probably the best new jet of the update. The viggens legacy airframe coupled with aim9L's makes for an extremely potent aircraft. Runner up would be J-7D with its PL-7's
