I hope we can get a long distance sleeper train like this in Norway too. From Bodø and all the way to Oslo. Funnily enough that train would probably be run by Swedish SJ, as they are running the services on those tracks now.

The wonders of public tendering. Vy and VR (Finnish State Railway) running trains in Sweden while SJ runs trains in Norway 😆 (the Italian national railway carrier also runs trains in Germany, but that's more of an EU trade law thing related to Arriva and Deutsche Bahn)

I am currently on this "Luxury" experience. I feel like bruised cattle tucked in a tiny metal cubicle aboard this heavily rocking train. Nothing about this is luxurious. Yes, I should have had lower expectations given the price. I did not do nearly enough research... I wish I looked for your video review prior to booking or boarding! I accept full responsibility. And, by definition, a Dining Car is a sit-down restaurant on a train - not unremarkable cold sandwiches from a cooler. If unaccustomed to train travel, like me, research, research, research. I am now counting down the minutes until I reach Kiruna and can disembark. I did adore Stockholm so I have every expectation the rest of Sweden will thrill me as well.

@@CapiMom3 I'm sad to hear you have had this experience, I really enjoyed my trip, but it's definitely not for everyone. Also these carriages are indeed very old and it's starting to show. I hope in the future if you give night trains a go, it will be one of the ones with a full proper dining car and much smoother (the ones over in Finland for instance) Enjoy northern Sweden it's beautiful up there

When I studied at the University of Luleå some 30+ years ago, they added a bar/cinema carriage to the end of the train. That was a great way to spend the evening before going to bed (except for the time they had locked the restaurant that was between the cinema and my carriage :D )
@Simon-Andersen Жыл бұрын
Now a cinema car that's intresting, don't think there's any left of those on regular trains anywhere

Been to and though Luleå several times for various things, using both Norrtåg and this sleeper service. It might be basic, but Järnvägsgrillen is definitely appreciated ahead of a long journey south (or west if that's where you're going). As you know, the entire Upper Norrland Main *Line is heavily congested with freight traffic, so that's why the frequency of passenger trains is the way it is. I have actually travelled on the sleeper train many times, mostly back when they used the entire main line. There was just a single night train through Umeå back then, and it's actually this very train (the 91/92 pair).

Luleå is just an appendix on the railroad net, with the only significance being one end of Malmbanan (The Ore Rail) Narvik-Kiruna-Gällivare/Malmberget-Boden-Luleå that supplies LKAB steelworks. I'm pleased you discovered the tunnel art in Boden (painted by my arts teacher Anders Hjort), though the station building itself is also somewhat unique and perhaps worth a few minutes of study.

Vy the operator of the train currently, recently demanded more pay from the state to continue service due to bad conditions of the trains and carriages. New trains are on order..... But it's gonna take a few years.

If you're willing to share a room with other people, you can get a ticket for ~1.000 kr. Also for the same price you can travel "the other branch", the 18-hour trip to Narvik (btw Abisko-Narvik is actually the most scenic part).

Hi Simon, I really enjoy your travelling adventures by train around the world, You are amazing Bro! Scandinavian Trains looking so cool and beasty and different instead of Dutch or German Trains, VY has an awesome locomotive! Such a shame that Sweden is a really expensive Country but the sceneries our awesome, Do you also have plans to go to The Netherlands to check our trains? Our hispeed train is the brandnew NS ICNG InterCity train (Alstom Coradia Stream) who goes 200 km/h, Keep on moving Simon, You are the best!

Thanks for the kind words Marco! I definitely plan on visiting the NL again i haven't been in 7 years. The ICNG is very similar to the new IC5 were getting in Denmark i would very much like to try them out :-)

What privatized infrastructure ownership does to a rail network. As in your BNSF, CSX and so on - prioritizing their own trains before Amtrak trains. The only railway infrastructure in Europe not being nationaly owned is generally port terminals. Private companies have an interest in prioritizing their own transports over others. Having said this, Swedish train traffic controllers still tend to prioritize freight trains when they have to pass other passenger trains, which mostly happend on single-track lines up north.

Another nice rail-trip by Simon. I have planned years bit similar journey, these northern trains of Sweden may be private-owned ones so costs are insane and not necassarilly able to be compensated by adult-interrail tickets as is the case in Finland, of course night cabin is extra-paid anyway. But for me, because not trains found via Haparanda at least easily, should I take a bus to travel via Sweden, it's nice country to see while weather sunny and decent be.
@Simon-Andersen Жыл бұрын
You can also consider taking the daytrains up to the swedish north, they should all be included in interrail for minimal interrail fees :-) Thanks for watching
@bpomowe224 Жыл бұрын
All trains in Sweden are private, as the railroad here is the most deregulated in the world. Even SJ (formerly Statens Järnvägar) is a private entity, though the Swedish government is the majority owner.

This is cheap by American standards. A 13 hour ride on a sleeper train (any long distance Amtrak train) in a bedroom with en-suite whether overnight or not would easily cost $400+.

Luxury?! Not even 50 years ago could this be called luxury; but now is a some dilapidated outdated interior, barely maintained at the "floating level" Imagine you buy an old home with the old furniture and stuff. Normal interior, not luxury. And the seller using fancy words like luxury for their depreciated offering.

That's because it is basically that. The route is considered of national interest so the route is subsidized by the Swedish Trafikverket, which amongst other things own almost all tracks in Sweden. The route is operated using rolling stock provided by Trafikverket, and Vy here has now demanded more pay to continue the route until the ordered new rolling stock arrives.

Cry abt it, it’s the experience that matter isn’t it? (Plus VY is the Norwegian state railways)
