All of those ants crawling along the rock behind your table and firebox made me nervous for the bare footed kids? ha ha This was a great success with your crumb cake, I just ordered the baking set. You have me hooked Steve.

What a great video! I don't really need a billy pot, bit I wouldn't mind an OVEN! Thanks for sharing this with us. It also sounds like your family was having a pretty good time too. I am actually waiting for my wife to get home so we can leave on a weekend camping trip. The Nano is going too!

You lucky dog, that looked so good. I really like that pan you used. My wife and I have to try that. I'd like to send you a steamer rack that I use, but your system looks like you could fit a half a cake in it, mines smaller with the pot upright

n8mayfield Going horizontal does seem to open up some more space which is nice for me because I'm always cooking for the whole family. Thanks Nathan!

As always, brilliant! Looking forward to trying this out. At Bryce Canyon recently I gathered a plastic grocery bag half full of Ponderosa sticks and cones. Kept my "campfire" going for an hour and a half, and didn't burn half of the cones! They seemed to burn rapidly at first, then make themselves into a "coal" that clogged the oven - didn't burn to ash like the sticks, BUT like a not very hot coal kept things going. Slower, cooler residual burn, but long lasting! Anyone else experience this with cones?
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
Christopher McKellar Hi Chris, I haven't burned cones enough to have any information for you, but it sounds interesting to experiment with. Thanks so much!

You need a bigger “bush” knife guy! Would work better splitting your wood. Another good video, nice cake too. Yum.

That was BOMB!!!! :D Still trying to find isopropyl down here :(
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
Alba Diz Hi Alba, I wouldn't recommend ISO. Ethanol would be my first choice, followed by methanol. Thanks, as always, for the comment!
@BurningStar819 жыл бұрын
FireboxStove Where can I find that Steve? Cause I'm a bit confused :(
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
Alba Diz Well, here the ethanol comes mixed with some methanol and it's called de-natured alcohol. Usually in hardware stores as a solvent.

Great video, Steve. I was wondering why you placed the firesticks at the diagonal to secure the pot? Seems like the 16cm pot would have set nicely just using the top edges of the firebox. Keith.
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
K Judd Yes, it would rest on the edges without the Firesticks but raising it up allows the heat to flow further up the sides which distributes the heat over more surface area. That's one of the reasons I like the horizontal method so much. The heat is spread out a lot more than mostly just the bottom of the pot as with vertical baking. Thanks for asking!
@kjudd94689 жыл бұрын
FireboxStove Makes sense. Thanks

Hi Steve, do I have to have the coals on the top when baking bread or bannock?, or do you think they will be a flop?? I will be putting stones in the same as you have, the only differents is that I will be using a Trangia stove. atb Ray
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
CharlieTango 1 I don't know? I think it would probably be fine without the coals on top.

What size pan fits into the 16cm Zebra pot and the 14cm Zebra pot? I just ordered the Zebra 14cm Lunch Box / Mess Kit due to one of your videos thinking I would use it more than the zebra pot, and then you go and make a video baking this deliciousness. I'm bummed! Not really, but really want to try it myself!
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
Steve ToledoOhio For the 16cm pot the largest pan that will fit is a 6 x 6 x 2inch which may need some tweaking to get it to fit well. I would recommend aluminum (anodized, which seals in the aluminum) I haven't measured the 14cm yet.

Two questions for you Steve. What knife were you using to split the wood? And where did you get that 6x6x2 size pan you used? Thanks
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
sameold77 The knife is just a substitute for the Jacklore Classic I have on order with Sandy. The pan I used is one that I cut down a little to make it the perfect fit. I just got some in that I plan to customize and offer on my site hopefully by the weekend. I will also be offering bread pans for both the 16cm and the 14cm pots.
@sameold779 жыл бұрын
I'll definitely be looking for the pans on your site and will order it and the Zebra 16. I want to get the Nano to go with my 5" Firebox too. Would the knife you sell work for splitting wood like you were? Thanks for the quick reply.
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
sameold77 Yes! The Mora Companion HD has a thicker blade making it perfect for that kind of work. I like using a knife to split wood because you can be quite precise.
@sameold779 жыл бұрын
FireboxStove When will the pans be available on your site? Waiting for them to be offered so I can order everything at the same time. I'm gonna pick up the Zebra 16, some tongs, the Mora knife and maybe a toaks spoon when I order. Thanks Mark
@fireboxstove9 жыл бұрын
sameold77 Hi Mark, I cut down the square pans today and took some pictures. I hope to get them up on our site by the end of the day.

Have you ever tried baking without the hot coals on top of the pan? Are the coal on top really necessary? Thanks
@fireboxstove7 жыл бұрын
That depends on what you're baking. If you're using the square pan that divides the top and bottom making it very nessicary
