I've been eyeing this specific tool for quite sometime. Such a great little purpose built machine. Very effective in steep terrain too with the tracks and low center of gravity

Saw one of these many years ago up in Canada at a maple sugaring operation. It had a Diesel engine and no hydraulics because they didn’t want to risk a broken line spilling fluid. They had a dump bed for it, another bed that had a 300 gallon sap tank, plus the log bunks. They also had a tender that they could pull about 12’ behind it, with fat tires and log bunks, so you weren’t dragging the log in the dirt. The owner loved it, because his terrain was difficult for a tractor in many places, plus how easy it could maneuver in between close trees and that it didn’t tear up the ground much. It had a manual crane rig and some hand winches. Pretty basic machine but super handy for his operation. I think he said it was made in the 1950s.

This is definitely a great machine, especially where draft horses are not available. However, horses like having a purpose, a job to do. They are very self aware. So I hope your neighbor's horses still have work to do.

As demonstrated, its low impact on the land and forest must be one of its major advantages. Far superior to clear-cutting a 40-ft swath for a flat-bed truck.
