läsförståelse är mycket viktigt, så jag kan förstå att de fokuserar på detta då det är en viktigt del av svenska. men samtidigt så är jag nu inte på grundskolan och kan uttrycka mig om hur upplägget är strukturerat. jag kan se på de gymnasieelever jag undervisar att de inte har svenska i den omfattning jag skulle önska, och jag uppfattar den som lägre än vad jag själv hade för 20 år sedan när jag gick ut grundskolan. i övrigt så ser jag på språk lite som på idrott, utan mycket övning så blir man inte bra. så utan att man själv tar tid till att läsa, tala och skriva "korrekt" så kommer man inte att förbättra sina kunskaper, det är här jag menar att många ungdomar i dag inte tar sin tid till att prata/läsa vad vuxna pratar/skriver som kan ha ett bättre ordförråd och korrigera fel i det man själv gör fel. om jag går till mig själv så var det inte förrän jag började studera till yrkeslärare som jag blev fascinerad av vårt svenska språk. jag blev tvungen att lära mig nya sätt att uttrycka mig på som jag inte använt tidigare, för utan något uttryck att fästa mina nya kunskaper vid så skulle jag inte fått ut något av min utbildning. p.s. vårt* skolsystem ;)

The "A" in "Ramlösa" is short because when a vowel comes before two consonants the vowel should always be short. Many mistake this rule for only applying when the two following konsonants are the same. This is also why the "E" in "Engelska" is short. Even though "N" and "G" are separate consonants, the "E" becomes short.

My mom was telling me that many of the aristocracy in sweden as in other countries spoke a fair amount of french and so many words got frenchified instead of just loan words. So like in Old Norse, window was vindøga (wind eye) but as you know it's now fönster in swedish (and vindu/e in Norwegian/danish) and the french word for window is fenêtre.

Euro should actually be pronounced evro since it comes from the word Europe which is originally a Greek word Ευρώπη meaning wide face and it’s also the name of a princess from Greek mythology. Ευ is pronounced as Ev in Greek so pronouncing it as evro is correct

In Swedish when a vowel is followed by two consonants it gets short, that's why its Ramlösa and not Raamlösa. M and L are consonants. Just as in Tack, Mygg, Jacka etc. And Kinneman should be "Chinneman" since a K and a soft vowel always make a sch sound, Kyrka, Kikare, Kärt, (So technically kex should be "chex" but that just wrong) Only exception I know is Kiwi but many that's because it's loan word? Because other names with EU in them are pronounced with a V-sound. For example Zeus in Swedish is historically pronounced Zevs. I say Euro with a u-sound but I'm not so sure I think doing it with a v-sound is wrong.

In the US and Canada a lot of (maybe most - unless they're trying to be distinctive or authentic) people pronounce espresso and croissant the way you noted that Swedes pronounce it. As for entrecôte in French the e at the end makes the ending pronounced. I didn't understand the double m/single m thing in the water brand name. What's the rule in Swedish about m's?

In Swedish written language we never spell with two m's if there's a consonant following the m, even though fonetically there should have been two m's. Of course there will be exeptions to this rule. This is simply a clash between using swedish pronounciation or the original pronounciation when borrowing a word. Same thing with Kinnaman though in this case it is a name and therefore doesn´t neccesarily follow grammar. Letters like G and K when followed by soft vowels are pronounced with a softer sound. For example the guitar (gitarr) is pronounced jitarr and the town of Kinna is prounouned shinna. The exceptions to this rule are some borrowed words which kept their original pronounciation like Kevlar or the disputed word kex which has both pronounciations.

I visit Sweden quite frequently since I live in Finland and when they ask if I want to pay with evro and I'm alway replying with "No, I want to pay with Eorå" (as it's pronounced in Finnish) and they always become so mad haha! Compare Ramlösa to Kramfors. The kram- in Kramfors isn't _hug_ but the surname of its founder, who pronounced it with a short vowel. Also, the reason entrecôte is mispronounced is the fear of accidentally sayng a dirty word ("angtre-kåt").

“Espresso” also becomes “expresso” in English and probably a lot of other languages too. It really annoys me when people say “excape” or “expecially” too.

Small note: Spelling has nothing to do with pronunciation. The word for him (han) is pronounced as hann and not like the actual spelling would suggest. It's the same with genre. In sweden you don't say "genre" even tho it's spelled that wha; you actually pronounce it "schanger".

Fun video!😊 I would say though when it comes to loanwords that its not always established how to pronounce those words, so several different ways are ok. . ”Euro" is pronounced "Evro" by almost everyone, politicians and authority figures for an ex, and its a an established way to pronounce this word due to an old language-rule that we picked up again as it works for this word. I dont know why we, here in Sweden, would pronounce that word in english?

Entrecôte is pronounced more like "antrekåout", with a southern r. But you do say the t.

This is funny, since Finnish has such a clear way of pronunciation, I don't know if there is a native Finnish speaker that could pronunce Finnish incorrectly.. Interesting.. I must start to "observe" this from now on.. :)

Don't get started on Chex and Kex. It's purely dialect. Both are correct, it's just that western Swedes say Chex instead of Kex. Say whatever you want, both are correct

Ah, a fellow pedant. Let's have a manly hug! In Finland, we also have the expresso/espresso problem. As well as espanrillos/espadrillos. The one that really annoys me is jalopeeno/jalapeño. We do have the word "jalo" (meaning "noble") in Finnish, so that's maybe why. Finns don't make that many mistakes pronouncing actual Finnish words because our system of pronounciation is blissfully simple. However, they -- not I, obviously -- keep confusing the meaning of words that are kinda close but not the same AT ALL. Don't get me started about that.

Regissör is the Swedish word for director. Many of us swedes pronouns it ressigör. I’ve never mispronounced it but I know many people that has.

Actually pronounce most of these right as a southerner. Only failed at Citationstecken, Croissant and Entrecote. Partly due to never really using the latter two.
