When I lived in Sweden for a year as a student I was amazed and amused by the endless list of unexpected and funny sounding holidays. This culminated one day when my colleagues asked me what I was doing for "blueberry soup weekend". To me that is the funniest example of a Swedish holiday. Yes, I understand it was the Vasaloppet! Also, I was amazed that people would say they were going to go on holiday "mellan hägg och syren." I couldn't believe everyone in Sweden would know so precisely when two types of flowers would bloom so that they would know when "between them" was. Lastly, I will never forget how much the Swedish people I knew talked about new potatoes. They talked about them all winter, saying they were longing for the day the first new potatoes would be pulled from the ground. They debated about what toppings they would put on them - sour cream or "bara en klick smör." And then one day in late May I saw that the front page of the local newspaper had a giant picture of new potatoes having been just dug up with the headline, "First new potatoes of the year dug up in Småland!" It had as much excitement as if they were announcing the end of World War II!

Perkele in Finland "sportlov" is "hiihtoloma" which translates to skiing holiday!
@Nackagubben5 жыл бұрын
Perkele! That's awesome information!

Hiihtoloma is not a fixed week, the southern part of the Finland has it first, then the rest. This helps spread the load of ski resorts and other travel destinations in Finland..

Sportlov also varies depending on which part of Sweden you live, so it sounds very similar!

In Slovenija, we also have a "potato break" aka "krompirjeve počitnice". Then there's the new year/christmas break, a late winter break (end of february? ski vacation usually) and the last is the May break.

A lot of these "weird" things sound pretty normal for me as a German. We also have the autumn break, which nowadays is called Herbstferien (autumn holidays) but had the name Kartoffelferien (potato holidays) in former times. We also have Winterfereien (winter holidays) and many people use them to go skiing. The thing with the seat number also sounds very familiar to me. The seat labeled on my ticket is my seat and I would take it, even if I was the only one in the cinema or theatre. If someone is sitting there, I would ask this person kindly to go away and take his or her seat. We also have special days to celebrate certain foods, but this is only a regional thing. So, if one region has a special kind of cheese or sausage or whatever, they often will have one day in the year to celebrate it. But this is not too common and often came up very recently for obscure marketing reasons. But having such food celebration days nationwide is kind of weird.

I guess seat numbers only apply in movie theaters. I was on a SAS plane from Stockholm to LA and some Swedish lady was in my seat. When I confronted her she persuded me to switch seats with her... not that changing spots made any difference (she was sitting next to me, both of us in the very center). Anyway, there is a huge strange thing in Sweden I would love for you to discuss... the co-ed bathroom in the shopping center (I can't think of the name of it) in Stockholm. It was like a big open room with sinks on one side and stalls on the other. Both male and females were in there. I felt very uncomfortable. Why sweden.... why.
@reineh34775 жыл бұрын
Uncomfortable, why? Do you gossip a lot? I know that Swedish women in the 90's often used men's bathrooms when they had to pee because the queue at the ladies was so long.

Damn... this „Sport Break“ is an awesome idea! :) wish we had that here in Germany. 4:06... I totally understand that, in Germany it’s forbidden to change seat even if you’re the only one in the whole cinema, since you payed for this exact seat, the waiter or a person from the cinema will call you out if you go on a different seat.

I would love to see (and hear) a video about how Swedish actors try to play an American character with an American accent. I know British people are often easy to spot when mimicking "American" (one clue is that the R's are too 'harrrd'). I wonder how you Swedes (and we Americans) can spot a Swede doing the same. Any thoughts?

@Anakianaj5 жыл бұрын
that doesn't happen cause systems won't let it happen. - Think about it as a list of available places and every time someone buys a ticket the place is changed from available to unavailable. - You can often (in movie theatres especially - and at least in the case of Germany also for the long distance trains and busses and many other things) pick from the list of available seats yourself so it's usually not that seats are just blindly assigned and you end up with something you don't want even though there were places more to your liking available when you bought the ticket.
