USEFUL INFORMATION - THANK YOU!! I bought a tiny one 4-6" tall, and after 12-15 years it is over 6ft tall. I even planted it in the shade outside for a few years, then took it back inside. I had the same question, but mine is the easy kind - thick all green leaves. I have grown VERY fond of this plant of mine, but the stem is too thin and it's so tall it doesn't get enough light from the large window near it. I recently removed all the lower leaves and it not only looks healthier, it grew a baby shoot - What a thrill. Good to know, I can cut the Cut and replant the Mommy with a 9/10 chance of it surviving. GOOD VIDEO!!

I have a dracena that is a marganata supposedly and am curious if you can take cuttings from the shoots of the main stem or if it has to be the main stem. I would like it fuller and have seen some examples where the palm like leaves are barely touching water with just a tiny bit of trunk. I guess I mean, do I have to cut below the cut stem where many shoots came from prior to my purchase or do I have to cut the main trunk that holds those shoots.

Wow! Thanks yours is the most detailed videos on Dracaena's. Well, I have a situation very similar to a couple of people that have commented. However, i have found myself in a worse situation . I have a Dracaena but I don't know which variety it is. I've had it at least 23 years. It was given to me by my sister-in-law as a cutting in a jar of water. Roots grew like crazy in the water. I planted it in soil and it just kept growing. At the end of last Fall 2017, it was a single stem 9" tall (>274 cm) and had fallen thrice because it was hitting the ceiling. I took it out to the garage (higher ceiling) for the Winter (big mistake!). It gets cold in the garage in the Winter (Maybe 38 or 40 F?). Anyways, I've been watering it in the garage and one day I noticed that the water tray was full of water. I think I over watered without realizing it. For 23 years, the leaves droop, then i water, and the leaves will pop back up. However, not this time. The bottom leaves stayed drooping and turning yellow. Is it root rot due to over watering? I have been thinking of making cutting since i put it in the garage, but now if i have root rot...what should i do first? Take care of a potential root rot issue by cutting the rotting root first or just start doing cuttings? I'm thinking of making several (3) cuttings since it is so tall. Please advise? Spring has just started and I think i better do something asap. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I was watching your video because I have a Dracaena Cintho (I believe this is what it is called; it is the one with very similar leaves like the one you show in the video here but with streaks of lighter green color along its leaves) which has reached the ceiling. Last Autumn I attempted the air layering method. After a few months, and up until now (March) it has not yet shown signs of rooting from the air layering cut (which is wrapped in moist moss). It seems to me I need to attempt making a clear cut, and because the whole plant is one stem that has grown straight up to the ceiling, I'm afraid I need to make probably 3 cuts. My first questions is, about when would be the best time to make the cuts? Where I live Spring is just around the corner and by April the Spring warmer weather is here to stay until summer. My second important question is, when the cut piece is placed in water, is there a danger of rot? And also, as for the top part, it is clear I can leave some leaves on the cut piece (as you have done here). What about though a middle cut piece? Can I also leave some leaves on that as well? And one more question, would a small dose of root hormone help in the process? I would very much appreciate any advice you may have for me. The plant has been very healthy, but the top leaves now are squeezed onto the ceiling and the lower leaves are showing signs of some distress (perhaps because at this point the size of the plant is very disproportional to the size of the pot, and it can not be replanted into a bigger pot as it has reached the ceiling. The plant overall though is looking healthy, but something will need to be done). Thank you so much for your videos, and I apologize for the lengthy comment. I do really need some good advice.
@SwedishPlantguys6 жыл бұрын
maria s.j. Hi, thanks for watching! The plant you describe can be a Cintho or a Massangeana. I’ll try to answer all you’re questions: 1. Best time for making the cuts are now. Just before spring when the light and humidity inside will start rising. 2. If you keep changing the water in the vase regularly there won’t be any problems with rot. Change it as often as you can remember it but preferably at least once a week. 3. Yes, leave some leaves on top of the middle and lower parts as well. 2-4 is enough. 4. I have never had to use added hormone to cuttings from a Dracaena. It usually is enough to exchange the water regularly so it has a lot of air in it. I hope this will be helpful for you and good luck! One last advice is to ad some nutrients to the water when watering the plant after you have made the cut. Don’t forget to subscribe! / Swedish plantguys

Thank you so much for your answers (and I subscribed to your channel :) If you can help me a little more in the process, I and Dracaena will be so very grateful. I have been pondering long about cutting this plant, and I would like to be as ready as I can possibly be (first time for me to have to cut back such a big plant, and I would like to do it as safely and as best as I possibly can and I have the following important questions). It’s really good to know that by changing often the water in the vase it can prevent rot. It is no problem for me to do it daily. So if the Dracaena I have is either Cinthos or Massangeana, they will respond well to the water method? My next important question is, the plant is about 160 cm tall, and the stem diameter is about 2.3 cm (just one straight up stem and it has grown so well). -So how tall should the cuttings be do you think, and considering that the leaves on my Dracaena are quite long (and since it will be good for each cuttling to also have some leaves left on it)? I prepared 3 glass vases, one is 28 cm tall, and the other two 20-21 cm tall (I consider it was necessary to make 3 cuts, and have 3 separate cuttings + the one remaining in the pot). -In relation to how many cuttings, I would think that the main question is how deep the water must be in the vases (the part roots will grow along it )? In relation to the question about how much stem in water comes the last question :) and really thank you so much for any help. -The question of the length of the cuttings also has to do it seems to me with what should be about the proportion that goes in water in relation to the part of the cutting that stays above the water? (for example, for the top part cuttling to go in the 28 cm vase, a 20cm of the stem goes in water and 15 cm above water with some leaves will make a 35 cm length cutting. Will that be sustainable for the rooting process? Or 15 cm in water and about 10 -15 cm above…? What about will be best…? That will give me a good sense how I proceed to cut this beautifully grown Dracaena plant (but with no more room to grow). And thank you again so much.

You can also put a clear plastic bag over the plant + vase to reduce evaporation and in the first week after potting, then you don't have to remove quite so many leaves.

The leaves are very large, like those of many tropical plants. Do you get any benefit from cutting the leaves to about half their length to prevent drying of cuttings?
