In response to K DeV: It's perfectly correct to say "Vara", but 95 % of the times you'll hear "va". It's comparable to "I am" vs "I'm".

Hey, pal. You have no idea how much I want to learn swedish. Unfortunately there is not a lot of videos in youtube. I think a public organization like a Ministry of Education of your country should make and upload videos focused on Swedish language learning. There are not a lot books in my country Paraguay and when I visited USA there were not enough books. People want to know more about Swedish language but no help from Sweden

The verb "vill" can sort of be used at the end of a sentence, although this is of course very casual and there is always a verb dropped at the end. If you say "jag vill!" then it has a slightly childish tone and is similar to the English "I wanna!". You can also sometimes hear things like "jag vill också!", which literally means "I want, too!" and sounds like "I want to do that, too!".

Thanks for the correction. You're absolutely right: when the context is obvious, it may be used that way in colloquial speech.

Is it always structured in the "present first, infinitives next way"? Are there situations in which more than one present is used? Are presents only used in adverbs describing another verb?

'Vara' is pronounced 'va'? Always? I know you have that annotated, but just asking to be sure. There isn't a wealth of Swedish where I am other than to listen to/watch Martin Beck videos. Without youtube, I'm sure many of us here would be lost. Thanks!

A few questions. I was taught that like = tycker om and work = arbeta. So what is the difference between saying jag tycker om juice / jag gilla juice. As well as jag behöver / jag jobbar ?
@swedishwithaxel5825

"Tycka om" and "gilla" are absolute synonyms. "Behöva" = need "Jobba" = work

Swedish With Axel I meant arbetar instead of behöver. Is there any difference between arbetar and jobbar?
@swedishwithaxel5825

64imma Both refer to the same thing (work), but jobba has a less formal tone and is therefore used more frequently.

Thank you for your videos! I have a question about the verb "vilja"; you said that it has to be combined with another verb, but in a poetry I had read I found the verse "rött vill till rött". The meaning is always "to want", so "red wants red", more or less. Why is there no verb? Is it due to the word "till", perhaps?
@nebelung1
@nebelung1 10 жыл бұрын
That's a pretty unusual sentence, but it could mean something like "red attracts red", "red wants to go towards red" or something like that. It literally means "red wants to (go to) red". Just like in English poetry you can sometimes find weird sentences like that and sometimes even archaic grammar. ;) For example, in Swedish poetry you can also still find the old plural present tense of verbs that has mostly been abandoned in Swedish otherwise since a while ago. I can give you an example with the word "vara" - "to be" in present tense: jag är - I am du är - you are han/hon/den/det är - he/she/it is vi äro - we are ni äro - you are (plural) de äro - they are In modern Swedish we would use "är" for all persons in present tense, as you are probably aware of. Some more examples: "de vilja följa med" (modern Swedish "de vill följa med", English "they want to follow"), "flickorna gingo i skogen" (modern Swedish "flickorna gick i skogen", English "the girls walked in the forest"). These declensions are rarely used nowadays but it is always good to be familiar with them, because every now and then they do appear, especially if you read a lot of poetry.

Thanks for pointing this out. You're right - in some cases it can be used as the sole verb in a sentence. Examples: "Jag vill hem" (I want to go home) and "Vad vill du?" (What do you want?).

Last year I was in Sweden for three months . didn't try learning. I came here in gotenburg ten days ago. Today saw your tutorials.See Swedish also is not a phonetic language like english. So it becomes difficult for new entrant on pronounciation.Almost all Indian languages are phonetic.you pronounce what you write. Since I know many languages,I think with your systematic approa ch,I should be able to grasp . Pronounciation can be written in English,side by side if feasible.

I'm having so much trouble hearing the words in sentences. At this point, I find it easier to read than to pronounce (or hearing someone speak it). When hearing someone speak the words in a sentence I am looking at on the screen... I cannot make the connection between what I'm seeing and what I'm hearing. It almost sounds like they are saying something other than what is written. It's very discouraging. I'm hoping this is a matter of practice and not some permanent mental block from being 57 years old and only speaking English my entire life.
@ceejay4284
@ceejay4284 6 жыл бұрын
@pegbars, do not be discouraged about not being able to make the connection between what you are seeing and what you are hearing. It may be that the speakers are speaking really fast for you to make the connections. This just happened to one of the videos in Swedish I watched today. I had to pause the video after the Swedish was read and read the English version. If you really want to learn any language, just persevere, as with anything in life ):. Also, there is no age limit to language, actually 57 is no age at all LOL! I would recommend using a language app like Duolingo, which enables you to listen, write and speak. Good luck with your learning.
