I'm sure Joe is a wonderful person, but a word about theatre manners: those audience members should wait until the bows to cheer for their friend. Depending on a show, it's occasionally acceptable to cheer at a super well-known person's first entrance before the scene begins and before the actor has begun speaking or singing. But it's another thing to suddenly cheer for a friend in the midst of the ensemble's intense opening number. That can momentarily distract the other audience members (not to mention the cast) and can take the audience out of the atmosphere they've immersed themselves in. Better to respect the intent of the director and the cast and allow the mood to be.

@@Avery_4272 You're completely correct, but what makes you thinks those are his friends and not fans? They were most likely younger audience members who are unfamiliar with theatre and are fans of Joe Locke, just excited to see him in his debut role. Of course it's not great theatre etiquette but it's also strange to phrase it as if the people cheering are friends of his and he somehow has any amount of control over it.

Seeing this production I can see why originally it wasn't a very popular show in the UK. Seeing Americans perform it confirms it is a very American idealised view of British society. The most successful productions in the UK concentrate on the dark humour in the show or when in a more operatic style. The original Broadway production only had a short run in the UK
@z.m.stewart19965 ай бұрын
I know what you mean, but the split second where I thought you were implying that Sweeney Todd presents an idealized portrait of Britain compared to the reality was very funny
@old.not.too.grumpy.5 ай бұрын
@z.m.stewart1996 it is a very American show. The libretto is scattered with Americanisms. Little Priest they sing about never knowing when a politician is going run.... in the UK, we say stand for election never run for office. Throughout the show, there are snippets that just don't seem right. Much of it seems a very American idea of Victorian England, a lot of which was cut out in the film. As with British stage actors doing US shows, sometimes the accents sound bizzar🤣
@KevinOrzel5 ай бұрын
@@old.not.too.grumpy. It's definitely got a lot of American phrasing in it. But I do wonder why the English would turn away a show because of some Americanized phrasing, but in the US we have English filmmakers and actors making countless stories about America. Heck, Alex Garland made a film about a fictional US civil war and Chris Nolan made one about one of the most famous American scientists in history just this past year.
