Unpopular opinion. Individual accountability is important. If you’re chatting online with someone and they won’t meet you in person or do a live video call “proof of life”, then there is some level of willful ignorance. With that being said, her cousin is evil.

There definitely is some psychological issues with both. It's sad that Kirat shows no introspection into what role she played in this situation. She was a victim its not her fault she just needs to recognize her vulnerabilities & weaknesses that led to her being a compliant victim. If she does not she will find herself in a similar situation. I hope she gets therapy & have a long successful fulfilling life of her choosing.

I don't know... I have a (male) friend who just WILL NOT STOP with the Russian/Ukrainian/Moldovan, etc. 'mail order brides.' Years and years and years of watching him 'totally in luuuuuuuvvv' w/ these gorgeous women who are completely out of his league who everyone else knows are just stringing him (and probably 10 other guys) along, and as soon as one burns him he starts over with another one. At this point I (and his family) have just given up, he will NEVER learn, poor guy. And always just photos, emails, and chats... video calls and computers/phones that can make them are 'too expensive' in Moldova. When he plans a trip to Russia there's always a reason it can't happen... He can't fly to Ukraine, too dangerous! But he can certainly wire money! Years of being strung along by just photos and texts. It's sad.

I watched the whole documentary and NONE of this 'catfish' would've been possible had she not just allowed it, but actually facilitated it. Her deep DESPERATION for a man/to get married enabled her to ignore all the RED FLAGS, all the signs, and even lack common sense. I mean how TF can someone be sooo gullible?!? From believing he was in witness protection in NY, to accepting a PROPOSAL via FB messenger with a DRAWN ring?!? It took her grandmother's FUNERAL to get her fed up. This woman got bamboozled because she more than ALLOWED it, she FACILITATED it.

I actually watched this on Netflix last night. I felt so sad for you Kirat, I admire your courage and strength. To find out it was your cousin it's incredibly disgusting. You have to be really mentally disturbed for her to violate your emotions and your feelings. I hope you get a lot of support from close friends and family. 9 years it's such a long time. I understand that people are vulnerable but to fall in love and get “engaged” to someone you have never met, never video called and barely heard speak, for the best part of a decade is ludicrous, someone from her family should have given her head a wobble. I’m not one to victim blame but I do think she needs to accept responsibility for her part in this and understand why the public aren’t going to demonstrate much in the way of sympathy.

After listening to the podcast, documentary, and listening to her interviews, I have concluded that she was a victim, she’s living in a victim mentality, and has absolutely no insight as to why this happened to her. she needs to be diagnosed by a team of psychologists or psychiatrists and I think someone should give her an IQ test. A diagnosis and an IQ score would explain a lot.

What stuns me is that in so many of the interviews when she starts talking about something that 'happened' in the past (which of course didn't actually happen) she gets all worked up and animated saying things like 'WE (she, his 'cousin' who didn't exist and his 'friend' who didn't exist) were talking to his medical team in New York (no you WERE NOT!) trying to get them to adjust his....' Woman, you were TALKING TO NO ONE! THESE PEOPLE NEVER EXISTED! It really seems like a part of Kirat still believes this stuff actually happened, to this very day. Well, they're Indian. I have many, many Indian colleagues and used to live in a suburb of the SF Bay Area that is about half Indian. I can totally believe it. Especially b/c she thinks his family 'knows' her family since they're both from the Kenyan community, so that would totally seal the deal. So much of this is just an INDIAN STORY that makes no sense to outsiders.

From my understanding her family didn't 'know' him, but knew who his family was and should have known that the family had a son named Bobby who was an ocular surgeon (not a cardiologist) in Brighton, was married, NOT divorced (the Indian community would have been abuzz if he got divorced, believe me), and had a son, and had NOT disappeared from Kenya into the USA's 'Witness Protection Program.' It's made clear that Kirat's father was kept in the dark, but her MOTHER knew. Maybe her mother just wanted to get Kirat married so badly that she was also just delusional and ignored all the signs.

I think she was already used to a toxic relationship with her ex and her cousin would have known what to say to manipulate the situation. I think it's unfair to blame someone who's a victim in this. A well-meaning person would believe a lot of it, and once you're in love it's really hard to let go, especially if the other party does exactly what's needed to give hope to you. It's horrible. It's so easy to say many things, but it's such an elaborate scheme she fallen for. Something needs to change, all sorts of identity scams are happenning and they won't go away, and while technology advances - we don't we're the same humans. Regulations need to be created. Kirat, I wish you the best, none of it is your fault, you're great!

How long before one wakes up ? There is defi plenty of catfish, fake scammers and married dudes on the dating apps, but if someone can't talk, face time within a few days and meet IRL, you don't waste time.
