I can remember planting sweet potatoes with my Dad. We planted them in mounds of dirt. Thank you for sharing this with us. Take care.

I am so attracted to Tropical plants and have tried to grow SO many things in Oregon that really don't thrive here. I have loved when I have been able to Winter over a few plants, but with last year's ICE storm while I was in Mexico, nearly everything in my Greenhouse died... My Pomegranates survived and Hardy Bananas but that is about it. Still, I try! Counting days till Mexico now... Even though most of my time will be in Puebla where it's cold at night, we have several trips planned to warmer areas. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy your trip as well.

Bury it at the very bottom, the slips will start to grow their own roots at the base of the stem. I'd guess they will survive unless they get totally dry.

ugh, I've already left on my drive, if they don't survive I'll try that again next year.

Would be a good experiment. Will definitely grow really slow if it survives. They just love the heat.

I don't have high hopes but I never know until I try Any advice on growing them in the summer?
@PalmettoPreparedАй бұрын
@@OldSchoolPrepper they LOVE the heat. High heat and humidity are their favorite things. Don't mound like regular potatoes, I put them in the valleys and just cover level. Moderate water, I let the soil dry out before watering. Letting the leaves almost droop

That's one of the root vegetables I want to grow around here, that is grown from cuttings as well, you take long cutting, make a circle and bury the cut end, leaving the growing part out, cutting will root. I started building a raised bed to start growing lettuce, I'm dying to start growing veggies, but the animals destroy everything, I'm blocking the raised bed with a fence.
@OldSchoolPrepperАй бұрын
ahhhh the animal menace! Will you need to shade the lettuce? it's a cold weather crop, grows kind of ok here, I never have much luck with it so i stick to spinach, kale, chard and other greens. I cant wait to see your garden this year, sounds like you are taking things to the next level

@OldSchoolPrepper I'm going to put a test raised bed between the run and the shed, the passion fruit is creating natural shade there, bed will be guarded by a fence door, and I will take advantage of the drip irrigation that's already there...The raised bed only needs 5 to 6 inches of soil for it to work, that's what drew me into the design years ago, you can grow a lot of food with limited compost, when I saw the design, I said to myself, it's the perfect SHTF raised bed. I will be adding a clip of the agronomy teacher explaining the bed, I did my best to close caption.
