Sweet Potatoes Experiment Reveal

IN THIS VIDEO IM GOING TO SEE WHAT KIND OF HARVEST I WILL GET FROM MY EXPERIMENT WITH THE WHOLE SWEET POTATO PLANTING INSTEAD OF STARTING WITH SLIPS. THIS WILL HELP ME MAKE THE DECISION FOR MY NEXT PLANTING.

There is a reason people plant slips instead of whole sweet potatoes. You could have had many, MANY more tubers had you placed individual slips in that bed spaced about a foot or so apart from the start. The ones you got were where the vines from the original potatoes randomly touched the ground and took root. That is an extremely inefficient and haphazard way to grow sweet potatoes. As long as you are doing the work, helping to maximize what you get as a return on effort means something. Start your own slips not via the old "water in a jar and toothpicks" method but just lay the tubers sideways in a shallow tray of potting half covered, half exposed to the air. Keep the potting soil moist but NOT wet. MUCH faster results. Those two or three potatoes will throw enough slips to plant multiple backyard gardens. Just sayin'. :)

Thanks for your comments. As you heard, this is the first time doing this. .i will probably do both ways next time and compare the yield of each. Im definitely going to start the slips, as you said in a shallow pan. I like that idea. I appreciate your wisdom and would like to hear about any other ideas and suggestions you think would help out. That's what I did with mine, well I actually experimented with whole potatoes, slips, and rooting the vines coming off. However I'm going to wait till the very end to harvest, so that's going to be about one more month before it really gets too cold.

​@@nunyabisnass1141I was told after the first frost then you harvest your sweet potatoes That was in aVA about 3y4s ago I got a good harvest I hope to do sweet potatoes next year 2024 I did regular potatoes 🥔 this year . The leaves have turned brown I will harvest this week, this is my first time.

I planted mine like that in the raised bed and from one potato, harvest was good. This yr, I used the slips from last yrs , so I will see the yield whenever I harvest in another month or so.

Can the tubers be used for next year planting... Sweet Potatoes only grow in the summer time for harvesting? I'm in Zone 8a and 8b, Columbus GA... Thanks for sharing 8.27.2023 CJ

Yes you can keep the potatoes and use them for next planting. Where i love in Fl. You can almost grow them most months. They love warm to hot weather so as long as you dont have a a lot of frost or hard freeze your in the clear. Now late fall or early spring you might have a slower growing plat because you will have a shorter day of good sunlight but they will pick up as the days get longer. Usually takes between 90 to 120 days to harvest them. Thanks for watching.

Hi from Southwest TN. I have better luck growing Slips in a box with soil outside. The water method doesn't work for me. I have them in different areas to see what's best. Thanks for doing this experiment. I was wondering if it would work at all. 💚👩🏼‍🌾💚

Cut the vines and put the sections in water, t they will produce roots. Store them indoors over winter and plant them next spring,, it's way easier.

Also if you pull up the vines while growing it'll stop the production of baby potatoes and concentrate on the initial sweet potatoes 👍

Nice - I will have to try that next year. I worked so hard to grow slips and my first batch had a ton of vines and zero actual sweet potatoes (too much nitrogen in the soil?) and then I planted two in 5 gallon buckets. I checked one at 120 days and had very few, small potatoes. I've left the other bucket til the end of my harvest and I'll do them, hopefully getting more. Didn't feel like all the extra work was worth it!

@@THEFIRSTTIMEGARDENER-mp9vv we eat ours, either mixed with fresh spinach for a salad or sauteed on the stovetop. My kids will walk through and just pull leaves as they play outside and eat the. Not what I allow, since they should wash them, but they like them.

I like your way. Not much garden space for the sprawling plant, I just need to grow one plant for fun and diversify. So you left the store bought sweet potatoes on the counter top without water or soil in which month? Until a couple of beards? What’s beard?

So not sure about beard. Possibly miss pronounce what i was saying. i think it should be said buds....lol So i bought a small bag of sweet potatoes from the store. We had them in our pantry. So there were two left that we didn't eat in time and they started to bud. Or some refer to them as growing ears . Either way its the same thing. So i just planted the whole potato in the ground about 3" deep with the buds pointing up. Thats it. Just watered them well for the first week, then after that once a week, unless it rains. Its important to make sure the potatoes stay covered with dirt where no sunlight gets to the potato.

Not sure what area you live in but south of nc, you should still be able to grow one. You can also use a food grade bucket to grow in. Good luck and happy Gardening.

Yeah you did that even if you only got one, I grew mine in a plastic container that was used for and under the bed storage and I got about twelve sweet potatoes 🍠 ❤and that success to me ❤

Very interesting results. I grew mine from slips in large bins with holes in bottom for drainage. Good results, but left them in for a bit too long and grubs ate on them some.

The tender greens at the tips of the vines are good to eat too, even if the storage roots don’t develop.

I started 5 sweet potatoes cut in half, laid on dirt and kept moist. I now have slips planted all over the place and have harvested 3 places lots of sweet potatoes. Still slips all over the place to cut and plant elsewhere
