Sweet, Shy Miss Luca - A Long Overdue Visit

Pretty sure this is sweet Luca (Simone's daughter from her first litter.)
She has ear tags, she's the right size, she knows her way around the porch, and she's shy. It's good to see her again. I liked the little stomp she did in front of the flagstones. Maybe a little message for Mom?

It's a real mistake to use human emotions for wild creatures. They tolerate him occupying their eating spot. Cause he hasn't distrubed them. Not the same thing as hand rearing them and bottle feeding. He uses the right amount of caution. It's awesome that he has them in his yard. They'd probably eat his Jack Russell Terrior without a 2nd thought.

@@SuperChuckRaney Not really. Simone & her various cubs trust Patrick not to harm them. Patrick is well aware they can be dangerous & has taken precautions which are not shown on the video. Many instances where humans & wildlife interact with pleasure. I certainly don't have a place for bears in my backyard but we all enjoy seeing the bears & cubs visit Patrick's porch.

Oh my gosh! That’s so amazing!!! Wow, Luca looks great. It was like Deja vu when she plopped down - reminded me of her mama. Lol. If anyone questions your claim about who she is they clearly don’t understand bears. NO WAY an unfamiliar bear would be that calm and relaxed for over 10 minutes with you on the porch. What a gift- this is the next generation still in your life! Just loved watching how methodical she was cleaning up her mess. Lol smart girl - don’t miss anything. EXACTLY!!!! That was Simone's baby all grown up!!! How AHHHHMAZINGGGGGG that the tradition continues. Safety and bird seed at Uncle Patrick's!!!!! Bears have an incredible sense of smell!!!!! In one of my classes I learned a bear can smell 1 drop of raspberry extract up to 2 miles away!!! 😮 That has always stuck with me!!! Keep that in mind if u leave your kitchen windows open or leave food in your car in areas w/high bear populations. Years ago i had a bear climb into my fenced in back yard while I was at work (likely b/c i had left my kitchen window open & had fruit in the kitchen). Some of my dogs were sunning on my back deck. Apparently 2 of the dogs decided to chase the bear & cornered it at the front corner of the fence where a battle ensued. Everyone survived but it cost me some expensive vet bills & was touch & go for the dogs for a few days. Of course the 2 dogs that went after it were the 40 & 60 pound dogs while the 2 smart 100 pound dogs decided against messing w/the bear!! I know from personal knowledge bears have a very keen memory & they don’t like anything new or different in their normal territory. They’ll tear it down or destroy it quickly!! They love destroying the wooden Forest Service signs, tree stands (they also like the salt in salt treated lumber) or anything new that shows up!!! I’ve had them rip down flagging tape I’d put up on numerous occasions. I have even had them follow me when I was cruising timber & they’d rip down every piece of flagging tape I put up at my plot. I turned around on one of my lines to go back to my truck at the end of the day & it had ripped down every piece of ribbon I’d tied up!! I had had that feeling all day that something was watching & following me & i heard it a few times back behind me so I wasn’t shocked to see it had been following me ripping down every piece of ribbon I’d tied up!!!! I’ve run across a lot of bears out in the woods over the years working as a forester & ive never had a bad interaction or felt threatened. I was slightly fearful during one interaction but that was only b/c it was a massive bear (600+ pounder) & we came WAY too close for comfort. It came out of the bushes about 10 feet in front of me. We were both quite surprised & remained calm & came to a peaceful resolution of u go your way & I’ll go mine!! 🤣 I absolutely love watching young bear cubs playing, its one of my favorite things. They are so much like human kids when they play (& also when they annoy their mom’s!!). It’s very cool being able to watch Patrick’s bears!!

I always wonder whether the birds ever get a look in, the small fellow who landed on the decking to taken advantage of the downed feeder must have thought his/her/it’s luck was in only for it to scarper quickly. I always chuckle whenever you have a bear visitor scooping up the seed, to hear the various birds generally protesting in the background.

That was so wonderful! It's such a pleasure to see Luca again and see how well she looks. At first I didn't know how you knew it was her, Patrick, but as you say, all the factors added up and it was so clear how familiar the porch and area is to her. I loved how when she'd finished eating (she hit the jackpot there lol!), she just settled down comfortably and did a little grooming, just a few feet from you without a care in the world. I would say you're right about that being Luca just based on how comfortable she was with you. She payed no attention to you as she lay down and eat. It seemed the bear was too trusting for a first time visit.
