SWEET TREAT MANDALA | Earth Tones | How to paint a mandala

Full tutorial on how to paint this sweet treat mandala using earth tones with delicious names. I ran into a bit of trouble with a particular bottle of paint and I'm excited to hear if you know why. Its as if the paint didn't want to separate.. kind of like an egg white or slime? It would gloop onto my dotting tool or gloop off. Let me know what you think and if I can fix it. I think I'm going to begin weeding out the Apple barrel paints and replace them as they gloop or as they run out. I think they are excellent paints but the shelf life seems to be lacking? I won't have a video on Wednesday but I have a short video on Friday and I have one lined up for next Sunday too. I had fun on my vacation and it cost me a mandala... totally worth it! I had to make an appointment at the dentist after watching this sweet video 😂😂😂 The colors are similar to that color palette you sent me for my dog Finn - VERY inspiring !!! Paint pigments all vary in opaqueness, consistency and lifespan. Thankfully paint is affordable so if we get a bogus bottle of blob, boot it !!!

I know, right? i keep thinking about it. At first I wanted to blame the brand.. but that melted chocolate is over 2 years old I think. I’m beginning to realize that my problem paints seem to be that outdoor/indoor multi surface.. I think it must expire sooner. It’s perfect when it’s new but it does seem to go here later. I would give pour medium a shot before throwing it out. I use that to thin out hard and medium body paint and it works great.

I have some.... I'll give that a try and see. I'd also like to just try water. I mean... ya never know. It's just so weird. It's not like the clumpy things you get in paint when it sits so long it gets a skin. It's more like a blob and it doesn't want to separate. It's really weird. LOL!!! It's like you were in time out, lol, lolo! I'm glad it's working again. I stray from browns because I've been nervous they won't show up too well on that black but it really well. Goes to show that I don't know it all and reminds me to give things a try.

Hello sweetie, all of my AppleBarrel paints do the same thing. Old or new. Don’t wanna be mean but i believe this paint brand is of a poor quality. BTW this rock is so yummy ❤ i would dunk it in my coffee ! 😂

Thanks for sharing!! I almost hated to admit it but it really does just seem to be this brand of paint. But... did you see how good the melted chocolate was? That's one of my oldest paints? The only difference is that the chocolate is not multi surface? Or maybe it's not as old as I think? I have to admit it seems to be the brand. Kat mentioned earlier that it's cheap enough to just get new. I know she's right but it's still a bummer. I'm going to add some stuff to it and try to revive it... but then? DecoArt here I come, lol!

This rock is gorgeous. That melted chocolate and espresso work soooo well together. I called them paint buggies. They usually come from old paint or the crud that's left on the inside of your cap that drops into the paint is what I have found. Normally though you can pull out the buggies and the rest of the paint is fine but if that's not working for you, you may just need to throw it out.

Great idea!! I just opened the doors to buying new earth tones. So remember how I told you I was having a no buy year... well????? hahahaha! Almost all of the earth tones I have are Apple Barrel. Maybe this is a good excuse to swap brands to DecoArt. It just seems to be the multi surface ones. I'll keep the melted chocolate.

I have that trouble with multisurface paint too! Not just the Applebarrel but Folk art too! I put liquitex medium in it and it was still goopy! So I went to craft store and bought some Deco art Americana . I heard there is a flow aid you can get so before I throw out my multi surface paint I might try the flow aid that Susan Nelson recommended! Love the earth tones on this one! 💖

Beautiful colors together and I love your design, JaDeL! I don't know what is wrong with that paint, although I've had a few kind of act like that. I have no patience with that kind of thing. When you're working with such small dots in a small area, you can't have that gloopiness! And you're right- nothing helps it. Not water or pouring medium or flow aids.. just nothing. Maybe try to get a similar color in a different brand. The Decoart Americana is so much better than Apple Barrel for dotting. It always has perfect consistency. I won't be buying Apple Barrel paints anymore.

Absolutely agree. I bought some more DecoArt for a canvas I'm working on and it's sooooooooooooo easy to dot with! Maybe it was a blessing that I learned with the bottom tier of paint. Wait until you see this canvas I'm working on. It's turning out so great. It's only the 2nd one I've ever tried. The Americana is just sooo wonderful. I think I'm sold. I think I'm going to make the swap as I can afford to. I'm still going to try to find a fix for this paint because it would be helpful. We shall see. Thanks for the help... I really appreciate it!

Take a tool and try to pull out a strand of semi dry paint. I've had that problem too, but it's the whole bottle, then is useless. So I think it's semi dry/coagulated paint.

I know exactly what you mean... I did open it and I saw a few bits... but the liquid part was like a blob. I mean... weird! It might be just what you say... the whole thing is drying out.

I added that liquitex adduce that is mostly water. Someone mentioned adding hot water. For some reason I think that might work. I have yet to see.

Beautiful pattern and color! I think the paint you had trouble with was just OLD. You have no idea how old it was when you bought it. I've purchased paints from Walmart that were grainy or watery. You have to buy on blind faith!

Coagulation like blood clots or dried jelly it's just thickening up naturally as it would if painted before drying with certain paint products come with different ingredients like latex and other gel like ingredients

Sit the flow aid down for a hot minute and just add some HOT water to the bottle - then shake like a crazy woman! (Or, just get to Walmart and spend 54 cents for a new bottle!) LOL< Thank you! I feel like the hot water might actually work. And you are right... it's cheap enough. I found myself this year trying really hard to reduce my waste. I'm trying to have a no buy year too. It's so hard and I keep messing up. But... I'm doing some pretty fantastic things. Reusing so many things and my trash has reduced from 6 bags to 2 or three. I'm at least trying. My point is... now when it seems so easy to throw something away and buy new... I'm trying to think? How can I reuse! So all these paints that you see me " throw away" I really put in a drawer and use outside on art work in the yard! I'll let you know how the water works.
