Hey friends a gardening friend just brought me a big clump of sweet william. Here in Georgia this is a plant we don't often see...our summers get hot and everything I have read says we need to plant where they get some relief from sun in the afternoon. Oh 8:10 my question was just answered was wondering how long the bloom period lasts. Here in Georgia probaby not a long time.

In Iowa, zone 5, I have 3year perennialized sweet William in my unheated tunnel. It’s blooming now with great long stems, at least 8 inches taller than my overwintered field grown stuff. I love them!

OMG! I saw the green blooms for the first time this Spring and was obsessed. You wouldn't think I'd like a green flower so much. I had no idea it was a sweet William. I feel very empowered to grow them like that. I love sweet william!

The green unopened blooms are great to use in bouquets. Love the texture! Sweet William is a wonderful filler flower. Thank you so much for watching our video. 😊

It's my first year growing Sweet William. Was planning on perennialising them if I can. I know people that have them in their gardens here for years. Hopefully I manage to overwinter and get stem length

so I ended up with lots of these in a wildflower mix in zone 3 Canada the first year they grew with no flowers. they seemed to stay alive overwinter here could see the green. I had no idea what the plant was until today after noticing the start of the green flowers. Excited to see them bloom! not sure what they will do next year!

So Sweet William, the old fashioned varieties, are true biennials. If they've gone to see the plants that have a chance to grow to decent size in one season will bloom in the next season. If they're planted too late and they don't get very big they may not bloom until almost a third season. This all assumes though they can survive a rough winter.

I have planted three colours of dianthus, and it's absolutely stunning and I love it. I am in India, by the way.

Great looking patch! What pruning maintenance do you do on these? Do you cut the plants down to the ground at all? Curious because mine always seem to look great the first year and then untidy the next year. Thanks, Tom (Roseburg, Oregon).

Thank you! No netting on those right? And what is your spacing? Thanks!!
@BareMtnFarm2 жыл бұрын
Hi, we use no netting on our sweet william dianthus. We did have a big wind storm that knocked a few down. But that kind of wind is rare and the netting would have cut them. So it is a judgement call on your wind situation, netting makes it hard to harvest. 9 inch spacing, Thanks for watching.

I'm on my second year and they are splaying open from the centre not standing up. I've just pinched them hoping that will help. I'm Zone5 🇨🇦

I think sometime when the stems maybe too weak or thin we have noticed a tendency not to stand up straight. We have never pinched but that may help. Best wishes and thanks for watching.

Could you name your varieties that you plant at particular seasons or months in a growing season? You started to mention that but I didn’t quite catch it.

I think you said Duplex and Electron
@BareMtnFarm2 жыл бұрын
Sweet William over wintering the varieties are Super Duplex and Electron Sweet series for spring and early summer and fall. Amazon series for the mid summer group. The biennials are mixes so you get what you get. Choose your favorite colors out of the 2 other series. Thank you so much for watching.
