I don't like using mimic tears / summons / upgrading my weapon so here's a few additional tips to help you beat this fight. 1st phase: - you can get two free R1's in each time he finishes an attack 2nd phase: - you can weave in one R1 when he does his left to right sword sweep - Each time he finishes his left to right sword sweep he might do an overhead sword plunge that then blows up, immediately after the sweep circle around him and charge up the weapon art. Don't waste this opportunity to R1. - you can use your weapon art when he jumps up, it's important you clear some distance and walk backwards because the jump attack increases the range of the lava. - you can use your strong attack when he goes to buff his blade (I don't recommend weapon art since it wont stagger him in his buff animation) - Unlock the camera once the skulls come out and run in a circular direction and keep running until it's over

This is probably too late but for others who have come across this...to dodge this attack you need to prevent him from doing this. He only does this if you're too far away from him. For example, running away when he does his poison spit or head lava smash might cause him to use that move because you ran too far away from him. In that case, you need to dodge to the right or left instead of backwards and immediately run towards him.

Anyone having trouble with the red skulls in phase two I recommend getting away from the boss and sprinting away after they hit you doge due to the delayed explosion then it should be relatively easy to finish the battle

Dont bother about the second L2. This was how I did it. Go into the arena, take the weapon and teleport back out. 1. Upgrade it to +6 2. Start the battle 3. Use a fully charge L2, take a 0.5 secs pause, charge again. 4. I did step 4 over and over again, the boss kept getting staggered after each charged attack.

For anyone else perusing the comments for more help, the summon that worked best for me was the Stormhawk! Not only does it avoid standing in the floor lava, Rykard had a lot of trouble trying to hit it in phase 2. Good luck! This fight is possible!

Basically, what I've learned is you kinda gotta game the second fight, because you need to get a ton of damage before he starts the skulls. If he starts the skulls before half, you're done. You had him down to about a third before he went into that skulls phase there... but man, it sucks when he can start it from like 55% or less. There's nothing you can do. Your build or whatever doesn't matter in this fight, Everyone hits for exactly the same damage, etc.

My one starts raining skulls at around 3/4 health + even if i dodge them all he does a sword slam down that is seemingly undodgeable, he even has a move phase 1 that you pretty much have to block (and you take damage anyway because of the lava) where he just lifts the ground onto you. Genuinely having 0 fun on this boss. Basically i just have to do it until i get lucky and he gets low enough before the skulls rain that i can kill him.

The phase one move i cant help with dude it was seemingly undodgeable, the skulls on phase 2 just run and keep running and stay away from him until he slams his sword then u can go back to dodging a few attacks. I found heavy attacks more effective as you can stagger and then do a double weapon art attack for massive damage… also start phase 2 with the double weapon art dodge what you need too and then try get some heavy attacks in maybe double heavy if u learn his moves and know you can fit them in and anytime you stagger him hit that double weapon art. I fought him once, decided to look up a guide and then got him on my second try so thank you, I killed him before the red skulls. Try using a shield with the "Barricade shield" ash of war and poke from behind your shield, spears can do that like rapiers. Just switch to two hands and use the unique skill when he gets poise broken and lowers his head. Grab attacks will still get you but they don't seem to one shot at least.

My advice: level up your weapon if you want, +5 should be good enough. Take your time with the boss. Do a special only when you know you're gonna land it, every other time just do a basic attack. Use special at the start of both phases, and around the end of both phases. Learn to dodge the boss, don't spam, breathe, stay calm, and do it. That's all I got. Very hard boss despite being a gimmick boss.

I found a better strategy for both stages. You can’t Stun Lock him, HOWEVER, you can animation lock him. If you only hit him with the FIRST L2 Charge attack, and then hit him with a normal R1 or R2 attack, it makes the first animation and cancels whatever attack he’s doing, AND it doesn’t count as stunning him, so if you do it over and over, you’ll keep cancelling his attacks and causing him to do his whole “I’m in pain animation, which gives you time to charge up the attack again before he can attack

you have to unlock the top left part of the map then you have to find godskin noble I'd recommend being lvl 60+ for him, then after you kill him an elevator comes down then it takes you up to the roof tops, then you will have to jump down into a lava lake and get to the building after godskin, then you have to go through a portal in the building and then you will be right next to his fog wall. Watched your video after dying three times in phase two - getting stuck really sucks in this fight. things get really frantic, here, and dying because, even in their fifth soulsborne, Fromsoft cannot make a good camera feels cheap and undeserved. Beat the bastard first try thanks to this and taking a breather - thanks, mate! PSA - carry three or four blue flasks for the weapon art, and put the rest into red, no matter if you're a caster, normally. I had a way easier time with just the serpentslayer spear, than I had casting spells, even at 80 Int with a fully upgraded catalyst.

One of the more annoying boss fights in my opinion. I did have a lot of fps drops though, which did not help. Some observations: 1. Upgrading the special weapon did not make a huge difference, although I am not a strength build. It did speed up the first half of the fight though, which is good because it's not that hard and the second phase is when you will die. It only cost me 12k runes to upgrade to +7 though, and somber smithing stones 1-7 are very common. (Don't waste +8 though, they are rare.) 2. First phase is easy. This boss creeps towards you and you don't notice him moving, so you can suddenly find yourself backed into a corner. He also spits poison everywhere. Plus he has a grab attack that gets me all the time, but luckily does not do massive damage. As mentioned in the video, do the light attack twice for good damage. 3. Second phase is where most of the bs is. You can get good RNG though, where the boss leaps away from you, giving you lots of chance to hit. At half health he will start the huge AOE skull attack. You can damage him here but it won't stop the attack. The best thing to do is to just keep away from the boss and dodge the skulls. I rolled constantly around the boss at a distance until it stops. One trick I found by accident: if you let the boss grab you, the skulls cannot hit you and his grab does far less damage. 4. At a third health, right after the skulls basically, he will bring out the snake head again. This is what killed me over and over and over. It does three attacks in rapid succession and they are not the same as the first phase attacks, so if you dodge like you dodged before it will kill you. I found it very hard to survive this because I had low poise, so each attack staggered me making it hard to dodge the next. The first time I survived this attack I killed the boss. 5. If you have enough fp, just keep spamming the Ash of War whenever the boss is not gearing up to hit you. It does big damage, interrupts the boss. You cannot stun lock him though - apparently that used to be a thing but they patched it out. 6. Make sure you two-hand the special weapon. It increases the damage a fair amount and, more importantly, your attacks will stun the boss every so often. Ultimately I don't think the boss is too hard, just annoying. I had big fps problems though, so if your machine specs are borderline like me, be prepared.

If you kill this boss before doing the letters to hunt down other tarnished, you will lock yourself out of that quest line. Just a heads up as I just did this to myself unknowingly…

Took me 4 attempts to kill it. Tutorial was actually helpful since I was able to see his attacks prior to actually fighting him myself... also probably helped that I was a tad bit overleved at 105.

Not really. Just like Stormruler in the Souls series, the special attack only works in one boss's arena.
