Normally in these games, when a character turns to heretical or unspeakable acts their knights/servents usually stay with them right to the end...but it says a lot about Rykard's knights that they were so disgusted by what he had become they turned against him and looked for something that could be used to destroy him. I suppose even blind loyalty has its limits.

I also feel like they wanted to spare him from the disgrace of remaining as the lord of blasphemy, much like Radahn's soldiers wanted to spare him from anymore suffering. Its not really comparable because they are directly opposing their lord, but the theme of soldiers trying to kill their master for his own sake continues

Honestly what's truly terrifying is that lore wise the tarnished could actually be beaten by Rykard if he consumes you and as such makes you one with him. I can just imagine the tarnished being swallowed alive but stilling having the wherewithal to slit their own throat in order to be resurrected instead of being fully consumed.. 😰

@@revengance4149 Haha well keep in mind Rykard isn't a hive mind like for example the flood from Halo and so by consuming you he doesn't merge your consciousness with his own but instead inherits your strength which is why he only devours champions. Furthermore lore wise I highly doubt Rykard would ever be strong enough to defeat demigods like Melania or actual Gods like Radagon and Merika. I guess you could say he definitely has delusions of grandeur and a massively inflated sense of self.

@@Doomseer He could have actually. When ranni gave a piece of destined death to rykard to stand a chance against maliketh, he could have defeated and devoured maliketh. I suppose he didn't get the chance. If he ever truly devoured maliketh and inherited the power of destined death, he can go on a rampage and devour anyone he wants. Literally the entirety of lands between could have been swept away by him. And not only he can inherit all the power types from the demigods, but also their great runes. He could become elden lord. But he won't stop there. He will grow more powerful and eventually maybe even devour godly figures. If he devoured ranni and got hold of the fingerslayer blade, combined with destined death, he might swallow the greater will. He can actually get an actual outer god powers. And if one outer god can go down, so might the others. This is why he is my favorite entity in the game. A being that is ever growing, immortal and inherits anyone's power that he kills. If we get some content of rykard becoming the strongest being in the game, I would love that.

I suppose beating even Radagon and the golden order just means that you were able to accomplish one thing Rykard wanted to do, which isnt enough for a tarnished to impress him. But, defeating *undefeated* demigods like Radahn and Malenia, THAT would make you worthy of defeating a monster who never stops getting stronger.

Interesting how Fromsoft takes from existing religious mythology. Zoroastrianism tells of a dragon-snake of outer darkness which seeks to devour the world, which itself is a very god. Its clear Rykard was inspired by this.

This has to be one of my favorite fights in Elden Ring because: - I legit was NOT expecting him to actually BE the snake. - The cut-scene was so disgusting, I was horrified but to the degree I felt nauseous. - Defeating him felt amazing because I really felt like I destroyed some sort of terrible evil, or put an end to something that would doom the world - Drops the most overpowered, broken faith weapon in the game, which was PERFECT for my build.

Headcanon: It exists outside of the Lands Between and is exclusively for Tarnished to use. However, it’s been a long time since the Shattering ended and as many Tarnished came and went, the Hold itself started to die.

Considering how the image and worship of the Serpent seems to vastly predate everything else judging by the item lore in the games; I don't think its wise to assume that Lady Taneth is completely delusional about incarnating Rykard (or the Serpent) in herself. Only time will tell.

In the opening cutscene that showed off all the principal characters, Rykard’s severed head was shown along with a normal-sized snake. So unless this apparent snake god was always comparatively tiny until Rykard fed himself to it, I’m thinking there’s a cycle of the snake god incarnating in a new, smaller form if it ends up dying.
