You are the absolute best Ambassador for this passion of ours, Paul. Your excitement, passion, and expression (both physical and verbal) for what you do is truly unsurpassed and never diminishes. Your personality is mesmerizing, with equal parts of humor, intelligence and sincerity. You share your remarkable talent and in depth knowledge unselfishly. I feel like I've known you for years, but never have had the pleasure. You're the only human being on this planet that I can listen to ...for hours on end... with or without a guitar in your hand. I often times get frustrated with your interviewers because they'll just pass over, or not recognize, something brilliant you just said, or a poignant story or smart analogy that you'll share. You really are one of a kind, Paul! Hope you're around a long time. Thank you, Sweetwater, for hosting and posting the incomparable Paul Gilbert!

54 years and still a student of music. Paul has been a huge inspiration for me since the last 80's. He's the reason I went to MI. I love his otherworldly technique which made me want to shred, was excited when he was in Mr.Big and showed his melodic sensibilities, but what inspires me the most is how humble he is - music is his guiding light, and ego has no chance there. He's a total geek who can talk about music for hours, and I just wanna hear him talk music for a couple more hours. A true artist.
@stephengaren22196 жыл бұрын
Back in the 80's I read a Steve Vai interview where he talked about playing what people said on guitar. Trying to get the inflections of the human voice. So I practiced doing that a lot. Sitting outside of the band room at my highschool, on my lunch hour, annoying people by mocking them on guitar. It was an unplugged electric, but the room was much like a tiled bathroom and was between the band room and gymnasium, so it was audible. I remember a couple people yelling at me to stop it, hearing me mocking them on guitar. I got pretty good at it after a while. Around that same time, Racer X was in the Shrapnel ads in the guitar magazines. Second Heat eventually landed in my hands, as well as a couple other classmates that played guitar. Although Paul states that he wasn't anything close to the Blues player he is now, in this video, a classmate and I discussed the fact that, on that recording, Paul, and Bruce, had some Bluesy bends happening in some of those insane solos throughout the album...which was sort of a stand out thing, as most of the other shredders, at that time, didn't. They had vibrato, sure, but not reminiscent of anything Blues related. Firkins came later. I'm just speaking of that particular point in time.

What an awesome interview. Paul is so passionate about the craft. It really impresses on me the idea that you can never learn enough about the instrument. Albert Einstein once said: "Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex… It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction." (Paul as a teacher) He also said: "Once you stop learning, you start dying." and "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." (Paul as a Player) "I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university." (Paul as an epic person) So we can see he really is the Einstein of Guitar. Einstein: "A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new." Well forget what i said - i never saw Paul making a mistake \m/
@Michael4yah6 жыл бұрын
Einstein was an invention. A fraud. Read true history. You'l stop quoting him overnight. Learning false facts and history is worse than not learning at all. Most Einstein quotes were prepared for him by his handlers. Do you really think that a genius would have trouble passing high school or end up working at a tedious job like a clerk? Einsteins theory of relativity is actually a combination of two european scientists theories. In fact the european scientists denounced him as a fraud early on after meeting him at their annual convention and realizing he didnt have even the most basic scientific knowledge. Listen to what Nikola Tesla had to say about Einstein. Cheers. www.thedailyplane.com/tesla-outs-einstein-and-his-theory-of-relativity-as-a-fraud-in-article-from-1935/

I agree, Einstein was a shill and freemason puppet. I used to really look up to him but doing research has changed all of that. Tesla shouldve been taught about in schools not the other frauds. Going back to Paul, Ive seen him twice and met him once and i think this man is a genius and bloody hard worker. He was really nice too, considering i was first in the queue out of about a thousand other guitar geeks all behind me. He must have thought, Ive just done a 3 hours workshop and now i have to make nice with all these geeks. LOL good guy all round.

Pauls enthusiasm is infectious and he nailed it on what playing guitar is all about. It’s an endless journey of learning and exploration and most importantly, happiness. It’s what keeps us all excited every time we pick up the guitar and learn something new or rediscover something old. It’s refreshing to have an influence that doesn’t make you feel like guitar is a competition and is just as excited as you are about learning.

Great interview. I'm left-handed and have been teaching music for over twenty years. I've come to the conclusion that ALL guitarists should play "right-handed" guitars. There are no left-handed pianos, with the high notes on the left side, and there is no reason why anyone should play a guitar in reverse position. The right hand is left-brain, rhythmic and repetitive; the left hand is right-brain, intuitive and creative. "Right-handed" guitar is what all left-handers should play; it's what ALL guitarists should play.

In January '84 I was at the Anaheim NAMM show and I heard this unbelievable guitar work that someone was doing from one of the booths (that naturally filled the convention center). It was this HYPER fast fluid melodic playing that blew my socks right across to Disneyland across the street. I found the source, this young 15 year old kid with messy hair on a cheap barstool at the Charvel booth just shredding the place. A crowd started to form and most people stood motionless in amazement (remember this is '84), one of the being Jake E. Lee from Ozzy's band at the time. I took a picture with my pocket 110 camera, wonder if I still have that print. Man, what I'd give to have an iPhone back then. His solo on the live RacerX CD doesn't even sound like a human could do that. I got to talk with Paul several times a few years later when he was with Mr Big, and his warm and even class clown personality is probably more likable then his playing if you can believe that. Phenomenal guy all around.
@fistoftulkas73356 жыл бұрын
Was that really Gilbert? I know he was in contact with Mike Varney since at least 1982, when he wanted to replace Randy Rhoads... He was a bit older than 15 in 1984 though, around 17, since he won Guitar Wars in '85 at 18 and he was born in November 1966, but didn't know he was already playing at NAMM shows that early... Anyway yeah, Paul's shredding was already unparalleled back then, with that crazy fast, percussive, accurate picking, and the bluesy melodic lines...

I walk away thinking about the fact that there are two types of people playing musical instruments. 1. That needs a guitar teacher to walk them through the process and cannot evolve without them. 2. Musicians whom know where they are weak and go searching for the answers in the practice room. The second group becomes really good and influential, the first group can never connect the dots or think a new thought. Thanks for the interview.
