I noticed that with movies, just look at captain marvel or birds of prey. I’ve never seen movies over advertised like those two from their respective franchises. Not even the main avengers movies received that much publicity... because they didn’t have too. Fun Fact the real reason for Quibi is a top tier scam act. Since everything is short web-based content everything filmed for it does not adhere to labor and union laws for the film and tv industry. All studios keep the rights to their work. this means a studio can film a feature-length movie without paying union salaries or royalties of any kind, chop it up into ten-minute chunks, and in a few years rerelease it theatrically and make box office as well. Its kinda like the play the producers where they are scamming the system. The more you know.

Towards the end it clicked for me that the "on-the-go" aspect may very well be not as genuine as they sell it. Modern streaming services are terrified of stuff like password sharing or really anything that prevents every person from having an account. If they be making it impossible to screen capture or watch with a friend on a big TV means that if you have a a group of millennial roommates who are all interested in Quibi they have to watch on their own instead of having like one Netflix account. It feels like this concept was developed during that time on KZbin when everyone made their videos 10 minutes because the algorithm liked that but now long form videos are much more popular so it doesn’t really make sense right now. My least favourite thing about the service is how the marketing was one of those "people incredulously repeat the nonsense brand word" deals. The only thing that makes me feel stupider than trying out a service like this is having "oooh, what's a QUIBI?!" stuck in my head anytime I use it. On that note, you bring up how this service is marketed to busy millennials (I am one), and that made me realise just how often millenials and gen z are conflated for the purpose of marketing. "Oh? They don't want healthcare, they just want some screentime that'll fit their Tony attention spans". Devil's advocate, there's very little that culturally divides the last two generations, but lumping all the young people together is amazingly disrespectful.
@keiskay4 жыл бұрын
I mean as a millennial on the younger side of the generation im starting to notice a gap between me and gen z in cultural things, mainly slang and mainstream media choice. It feels like some kind of celebrity vanity project. The price also astounded me. You can get Disney’s entire catalog or Netflix’s cheapest plan for the same or less than ad-free Quibi. They are giving the consumer subpar content that still contains ads even in a paid version. It’s a skip for me.

Quibi is like if KZbin Red was a standalone app with worse content, a strange upload cycle and a super tight restriction on the time for content that isn't intended for that type of structure. The only show that feels like it belongs there is Punk'd bc those episodes feel like a standard KZbin prank video that is just set up, prank, reveal like you said, just with higher production value. In my opinion a good example of what Quibi is trying to or should aim to be, at least in the horror genre, would be something like Crypt TV's videos where you get a good 5 minute video that for some of their videos and series follows an overarching storyline/anthology.

So they've decided to create an app that you can't watch with basically more than one person (and even that will be uncomfortable), and they've also completely blocked the ability for users to create memes and reaction gifs which would basically do their marketing for them. Seems like a great business model. Why do I feel like a group of execs decided what they "think" milennials and gen zers like without actually thinking critically about any of this?
@adultlunchables4 жыл бұрын
I think the reason they did this crap is so that people wouldn't pirate their content. If you can't watch it on a computer, it's much less likely anyone will bother ripping it and uploading it somewhere. It can still be stolen from a phone, just far less likely. Terrible idea on Quibi's part. I'm just saying, I think they were being greedy by saying it's phones only.
@beam28364 жыл бұрын
@@adultlunchables Sure, I definitely get doing it from that standpoint. Agreed that it's a terrible idea on quibi's part though. @adultlunchables4 жыл бұрын
@@beam2836 If nothing else it's short sighted. The pirate community will still rip their content, they'll just emulate Android to rip the videos from Quibi. Whether people will be interested in watching short pirated videos or not, over in those communities they gain respect for the effort they put into ripping videos. The Most Dangerous Game has a really interesting history. As you mentioned it was a short story and was adapted into a movie in the 30s that you can find on youtube. It's a pretty campy and interesting film to watch 90 years later. Most infamously The Most Dangerous Game was referenced by the Zodiac Killer in the first cryptogram Zodiac sent to newspapers. The solved cryptogram included the phrase "man is the most dangerous game". There's a very rich history of literature that's referenced in the Zodiac case including old pulp novels and comics from the golden age but the Most Dangerous Game is probably the most famous and relevant of them. Thanks for the video!
