Thanks as always from Toronto. I love all the little shells. The pink tip on the lace murex was soo beautiful! Since you mentioned the pen shells - I gave a presentation this week at a senior's apartment complex about my Florida shells. Showed some of the differences between west and east coast. Told several stories, including the $25 pen shells for sale at the Bancroft Gemboree! Also showed my shell flowers, pendants, earrings, wreaths, mosaics and sculptures. I gave a talk and handout about mollusks, comparing gastropod bodies to humans, trying to help people appreciate them more. They are important ecosystem engineers. If you like I'd be happy to send some pictures. Thanks again for your wonderful videos. Janet
@donnajohnson3334 Жыл бұрын
Wow, I wish I had been a fly on the wall there ! That is wonderful of you to do that for others !. I too, have done some of that for VBS. I compare the mollusk bodies to our tongues, cuticles, many similarities !. Kids ask me amazing questions. Alot of people in the Midwest know almost nothing. Except they all have heard you can hear the ocean in a shell. I sometimes face paint shells, dolphins etc for them for free, too. One time, We put a plastic sandbox of sand and shells for them to search through. Thankyou for sharing this ❤💕💖💓 Blessings

Wow wow wow on every single one of your finds in this video -- I love those so much! In addition. . . I crave one kind that doesn't register as special to most shellers -- those big heavy southern quahogs. ( I found one with clay colors that looks and feels like pottery and is very very old.) You've got me craving to go the other extreme finding tiny shells. your vids have led me to go back and search through my old collections. It took me a while to track down a couple of good ID books (you could do a show on that topic!) I'm selective on the big stuff, but can never get enough scallops, jingles, turkey wings, and neat small shapely bivalves.

Hi Sharmon! I’ve only shelled the Cape Hatteras shore line,so I have some of the same shells you find, but I’d definitely pick up any of the beauties you show us. I particularly like the calico clams and I’m drawn to paper figs, but I think the little lightening whelk would be the one I couldn’t resist gathering multiples of. I’ve picked up a decent sized collection of large whelks of all three varieties commonly found on the Hatteras shore, so the little guys really appeal to me. I tend to pick up even pieces of shells to take home and hopefully identify. I love learning about the coastal ecosystem and it’s inhabitants, so I guess I could a bit of a nerd😂

Question for you. On shell tours what’s the etiquette for who gets first dibs so to speak? Can an eager beaver sheller just power walk ahead of everybody, grabbing all the cones, leaving you in their dust?😂
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
Let's just say, the early sheller gets the shell. If you happen to be with some other very eager people, yes - the first person to get the shells gets the good ones! You can either try to be very quick and grab the good stuff, but you might miss a thing or two but the "tone" of the shell tour will be set by the others on the tour. If everyone is kind - it's fabulous! Since I live here I don't try to beat other people to the shells 😃

And there are several colors from typical white, grey, beige, yellowish. There's a pinkish one. They are just such cool little shells.
@donnajohnson3334 Жыл бұрын
They appear to not be your standard little gastropods. I bet they have no hinge, no "belly button" Umbilicus, no "trap door" operculum, no standard aperature or "opening", and they have a very flattened "point" or apex. Alot like an abolone except they don't seem to have al the vent holes !. I went through my stash and there's one, but it's broken. So I will add one to my bucket list. If I were there today, I would pick that up, and a true tulip bc I haven't had one of those. Blessings !
