I was once in a small, ~12-person discussion-based class in undergrad, and somehow taylor swift came up. I was a swifty when I was between 9-12 years old. I saw Taylor Swift during her 1989 tour in 2015 and as an 11 year old- dude, I was so bored. I thought it was going to be this extravagant concert and sure you could say I was young and she was just starting out. But , again, she had already been HUGE at this point, and I see 6 year olds screaming at her concerts, dude. Needless to say i was so bored that I fell asleep as did another girl who was younger than me behind me. Even my uncle who's still a swifty fell asleep. However, I didn't see another concert until 2018 and that was when I saw Metallica and 14 year old me acted as if that was the equivalent of seeing God and it still was. Seeing One, Orion, and For Who the Bell Tolls, I think I peed. I remember this old man looking at me and my dad and he smiled, gave me a thumbs up and said "is this your first hard rock concert? You're gonna love it." So fucking sweet. I'll always remember that guy. The metal community is one of the nicest and best communities I've ever been apart of

im not a swiftie at all and yes her fanbase is extremely unhinged, but I dont think its fair to say that she "whines about problems a 16 year old would sing about". Things like love, relationships, breakups and heartbreak are pretty universal experiences regardless of your age, so it makes sense that she would make music about these things that she's experienced. Problems like breakups and heartbreak is a completely normal thing to make music about, in fact tonnes of artists do. Swifties have earned a reputation for being insane yes, but it seems like theres a lot of people who give unfair criticisms of taylor's music just because they (understandably) dont like her fanbase. If you want to criticise her music for being boring and generic then thats fair enough, but criticising her music because its about problems that you personally consider trivial is not very fair IMO. And even if taylor was making music about teenage problems, theres nothing wrong with making music for teenage girls about the experience of being a teenager, a lot of this criticism about taylor making music for teenage girls honestly just feels like people mindlessly hating on whatever is popular among teenage girls. I honestly cannot see how Taylor Swift is a “Tortured Poet”. Like, most of her songs are about breakups which is an experience most people have felt atleast once in their life. To my knowledge, she wasn’t bullied or harassed, she doesn’t struggle with severe bouts of depression. I don’t think Swifities understand the pain a lot of actual tortured artists have went through; Elton John, Van Gogh, Osamu Dazai, Kurt Cobain. Like, you can enjoy her music but I feel like calling her some kind of “Tortured soul” is a bit of a stretch.
