so true on the 3rd method you speak of. biggest bass i ever hooked and saw was the same. on fly, sneaky pete just bobbing it in the same spot by giving the slightest of strips and she comes beneath to inspect and almost "smells" the fly. a few quick, short striips and she was on! ....for a second, way too small a hook for that big of a fish! damn, a maddening strike

ROF 12 for most, 80% of your stuff, If I were to slow crawl 5 ft I would go rof 5, deeper than 30 rof 16. good luck.

Awesome! I've had a hud for a while but never really knew if I was throwing it right or not. When your crawling that thing that slow especially with a 5:1:1 it doesn't lay over on its side? That is why I can't wrap my head around that crawl. I just always feel like I'm imitating a dead fish being drug around. lol. Thanks again Matt! You guys rock!

hudds are designed to stand straight up like a trout restimg on the bottom.
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 жыл бұрын
That's why you're throwing a hudd or other high quality swimbait (we linked to some others in the video description) if you're using a knock off they'll lay on their sides. The high quality baits lay upright on bottom and look great at super slow speed. :-)

Are there any special considerations to take with regards to these swimbaits when using them in the southeastern US where the water is notoriously murky or stained?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 жыл бұрын
When that water is dark, slow is generally better. Although the bait doesn't have much movement the water displacement will help them find it.

Consider adding a gold willow leaf underspin and Pro Cure Super Gel to any swimbait. You’ll enhance the sight, sound, smell, touch, taste & feel of the six senses. And there’s this other thing we use here on the west coast that we call a “Tactical Bassin’ Alabama Rig” that you should check out. It looks like you’re throwing the chandelier from your dinning room so it’s hard for fish to miss. Fish on like Donkey Kong!

I was pre spawn fishing here in sandiego at lake poway .on 2/09/18 .was just going to see if the fish were moving up on beds.they rent electric bass boats ei . so I tied up a 8"live target Rainbow trout.and I slowed down to a crawl like you guys say.. all I felt was some weight on the end of my line and I was hooked up to 6 lb fat belly female .yep that was my first fish on a big trout imitation lure . I'm sold man .and got a few bites later and missed them but still feel confident in using this lure way more

That's great! I thought most of the bass you catch were florida strain. You make the best instructional bass videos I've ever seen! Many videos just show people catching fish or promoting some baits and tackle. You show exactly how you work the baits and what tackle and baits you use, without pushing people to buy specific baits and tackle. I visit your page or the youtube channel everyday, always looking for a new video, and it's so exciting when there's a new one! :) Keep up the good work!

the jerkbait description on the final retrieve is perfect. i used to fish the original LC Flash Minnow in clear water in NY. i could see bass come up and track it and i would just kill it. the bass wouldn't move an inch. maybe drift downards under it. then, without fail, giving a couple quick reels would make those bass commit to grabbing it.

I am just starting with big swimbaits so I been collecting assorted baits but, I am having trouble finding a reel I like. I bought a Hudd rod and I have an old garcia 6500C on it but casting is not what I like. I have been looking at the Diawa Lexa 400HD because of what I have been reading and watching on KZbin. I fish from the bank so I need castability and a deep spool so what I hear this is the one. Is it hype or the real deal? I am fishing (well not yet...health issues) for mainly Striper, Bass and Catfish. Is it worth 300 bucks?

In my opinion, it doesn't matter. If you have a forage base that one of their colors match then use that but here on Clearlake there are no trout and "rainbow trout" is still my favorite color of huddleston.

awesome video Matt!!! I am thinking back and the Swaver retrieval types are very similar with the Huddleston. So my big question is if I am throwing one or the other, what would you say is the major difference in retrieval? Thank you so much for your time and knowledge of bass fishing and keep up the good work Matt!!!!!
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 жыл бұрын
The S-Waver is much more "reactive" meaning you do those things much more often to the bait. The huddleston, even when you're trying to be really reactive will only be done 2, maybe 3 times in the entire cast.

great vid Mat. I'v just started throwing swimbaits this past three months. Would you be able to show the difference between using 200 size reels vs higher capacity reels. It seems they take up the same lpi. the 200s feel fine to me. Does it increase casting distance? Does it really matter? Would a video be possible comparing casting difference? Thanks for all your info
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 жыл бұрын
We could probably do that. Main difference though is torque. Its not about storing line, its about being able to turn a giant's head that one time that you really need to so she doesn't come off.

Another great info vid! Same retrieves in same areas for the spotted bass? Just with 68 special? Or glide bait since they like to suspend more?

TacticalBassin very cool thank you ! Somehow I missed that! I am in the east, Pennsylvania. Our lakes don't have trout. But lots of Shad as far as a starter bait I am sold on the Huddleston. I see Tackle-warehouse carries a green gizzard Shad option. Do you think that matching the hatch as they say is important? Should I stick to the tried and true trout?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 жыл бұрын
If there is a good match, definitely go with it! The trout is just a complex color that seems to get bit well but that doesn't make it the end all be all.

Hey Matt, Im going to be fishing Dixon Lake (HUGE BASS) down in southern california this winter for a few weeks. Stocked trout so the Hudd should be nice. But it is a very clear lake and m not sure what to use as a leader. 17 or 20 fluro too light for a 6 or 8inch hudd? I know you use 30 mono but that just seems like it would be too visible on a clearer lake that has fairly moderate pressure. Thanks!

I don't think anyone in the industry can even come close to the vid time you've logged thats purely out of love for the art. Shit thats real cannot be denied. I was looking to get the ROF #5 but I see its not rigged with hooks. Or that is my understanding. Do you guys have a video on how you set up the bait itself? The size and style hook(s) etc. Oh and great video on the retrieves.
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 8 жыл бұрын
The ROF 5 with jig hook exists but they're really hard to find. We typically just get the ROF 12 and call it good. We don't have a full rigging video but we'll probably do one soon.

Do you guys do the "Butch Brown rigging" of any other sort of hook modifications to these? I think I remember watching an older video where you said you leave the hook alone, but I'm not sure.

Yeah they don't like the stinger hooks, they say it's better to leave the jig hook on

@tacticalbassin 8 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey nailed it. We throw the bare jig hook, you're so much better off. Without going into all the details I'll just say that I don't agree with the BB rigging method. The solid jig hook is a phenomenal option. -Matt

Just chuck it shallow and treat it like a big spinnerbait this time of year. Go with regular rainbow trout, they won't be that picky its just an easy meal.

Slow as you can go then slow down some more! If I feel a ticking strike or a fish bump I don't slow down or speed up my retrieve I'll stay there as long as possible without stopping hoping to piss them off. If I have followers (a sign of more active fish) I'll make a second cast covering the same area and use an occasional side sweep flick n pause retrieve that induces an about-face to my swim bait. One other retrieve that I like to use, is None!! A dead-stick or drifting floaty in clear water over a tapering point or drop off or a shallow weed bed shoreline.
