This is part 3 of a series of swimming video tutorials on how to swim basic freestyle.
On this video I talk about what I consider the definitive factor on your speed while swimming, the legs. If you have the correct legs position and technique, this will be the motor that will drive you to success. Just like a boat, the speed is generated on the back and the stirring is mostly on the front
These tips and techniques will work best to help you improve dramatically your stroke if you do two things:
1- Focus on one thing at a time
2- Practice until you dominate that thing and move to the next.

Hi! I'm a 14-years-old girl and I'm trying to improve myself in swimming, 'cause that's my biggest passion since I was a child, but I stopped attending a course for a year (during this time I trained alone once a week). Watching your videos is the most helpful thing for me, because I want to re-start at best in the advanced course. Thank you so much, hope you will do some motivational videos. Sorry for my bad english and love from Italy🇮🇹🏊

I would like to see maybe a full lap of your kick from behind, with those lines, or at least a couple of arm cycles. With the green lines to trace foot/leg patterns, and maybe other colors to show arm patterns, I can't think of a better way to show linking the hip/shoulder/body rotation in freestyle. Oh, the timing of the kick and arm pull....

I am, so far, totally baffled by the kick stroke. I'm 75 and working at learning to swim well enough that it is at least a little fun. Today, at the suggestion of a friend I tried a paddle board to just work on my kick "stroke." That was enlightening, at the least. Just kicking alone gets me nowhere to slightly backwards stretched out with my hands in front as far as possible and just driving with the kick.

1 00:00:02,120 --> 00:00:09,960 "Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days." - Zig Ziglar. - Zig Ziglar. 2 00:00:16,730 --> 00:00:21,530 If you really want to get better at swimming, you need to learn how to kick properly. 3 00:00:21,980 --> 00:00:26,340 Here are four things that can help you perfect your kicking technique. 4 00:00:27,420 --> 00:00:31,740 1. Hip Rotation 1. 5 00:00:31,960 --> 00:00:34,720 In the last video I talked about shoulder rotation. 6 00:00:35,240 --> 00:00:38,200 The hip rotation should be synchronized with the shoulders. 7 00:00:38,820 --> 00:00:42,120 While the hips are rotating, you must continue kicking. 8 00:00:42,640 --> 00:00:44,920 The feet will be facing one side of the pool. 9 00:00:45,040 --> 00:00:48,200 And after a few kicks, they will be facing the other side. 10 00:00:56,620 --> 00:01:01,380 2. Knees slightly bent. 2. 11 00:01:01,720 --> 00:01:05,700 The knees should not be bent very much. Or else, you will slow down. 12 00:01:08,660 --> 00:01:11,820 They should be bent just enough to have the power to kick down. 13 00:01:13,640 --> 00:01:16,540 And then, use your hamstrings to kick up. 14 00:01:21,400 --> 00:01:24,260 3. Legs spread just enough. 3. 15 00:01:24,600 --> 00:01:30,000 If you spread your legs too much you will actually be pushing water forward, which is bad. 16 00:01:32,680 --> 00:01:34,420 To avoid this, 이렇게 하지 않으려면, 17 00:01:34,420 --> 00:01:40,680 try spreading your legs just enough to touch the surface, and downwards just a few inches past the body line. 18 00:01:44,560 --> 00:01:47,360 4. Ballerina Feet 4. 19 00:01:47,660 --> 00:01:51,200 If you already dominate all the other points of the tutorial, 20 00:01:51,200 --> 00:01:55,140 the thing that will make you improve the most is the ankle flexibility. 21 00:01:56,200 --> 00:01:59,540 As you can see here, my ankles are in dorsiflexion. 22 00:02:00,000 --> 00:02:06,420 I do not go forward very fast, even though the only thing I am doing wrong is my ankle flexion. 23 00:02:07,200 --> 00:02:12,000 So when you swim, try to have your ankles in plantar flexion like this. 24 00:02:13,840 --> 00:02:18,560 The thing with the ankles is that the straighter they are the less resistance you will create. 25 00:02:19,300 --> 00:02:21,840 Every one has different ankle flexibility. 26 00:02:22,800 --> 00:02:27,840 But while some say it is not possible to gain more flexibility than the one you were born with, 27 00:02:28,320 --> 00:02:31,860 you can get back some flexibility you've lost since you were baby. 28 00:02:32,680 --> 00:02:34,760 So be sure to stretch the ankles daily. 29 00:02:38,160 --> 00:02:40,160 Thanks for watching! Swim fast!
