Great alternative to thinking about this issue. I have often read about a dropped elbow and tried to raise my elbow, but it felt so uncomfortable I knew it couldn't be right. Spearing my hand a little lower I can easily do. Thanks, Paul!!

I have recently purchased a GoPro and found my elbow/hand relationship exactly like your video. For me, I found that I was swinging my arms rather than a high elbow recovery which was a surprise. Upon entry, my hand and elbow entered the water at the same time yet it felt like I was spearing...amazing misperception....thank you GoPro and thank you Paul for your detailed analysis.

Hi Paul! I love the way you in Swim Smooth analyze underwater technique. Just great. I wish we had such a clear water in our pool to shoot some vids like that :) However, I have to disagree on one thing. What the guy on this video (not MP) does is exactly dropping the elbow. It's not about how close the elbow and the shoulder are to the surface. It's about the pronation of the shoulder. Phelps' elbow faces the surface, while your friend's elbow faces the bottom of the pool or close to it. And what happens next is a poor catch. That's the difference. And yeah, this rotation really requires good strength and flexibility in the shoulders. P.S. Watch some sprinters swimming in full speed in addition to MP. Their elbows are going to be higher, 'cause the catch is immediate without any gliding with the hand in front.

Thank you for the video, it really work for me. I have been swimming for 3k nonstop as a regular thing for a few years. This technique save me 1second per 50meter straightaway! I also try the increase frequency technique, it also has great improvement ,but it is very hard to sustain over long distance.

This is excellent. I've actually been trying to raise my front hand to be parallel with the waterline, thinking that it would lead to less drag... but perhaps it's leading to a similar alignment as we're seeing here.

I’m pretty sure when coaches are speaking on high vs low elbow they aren’t referring to it in relation to the top of the water. I know when I talk about it with my athletes I go a bit further in my explanation by discussing it in relation to the wrist and the hand. It doesn’t matter HOW you describe it or whether you want to talk about high hand or high wrist or whatever just so long as the athlete understands what needs to be done.

I always thought I was adding drag by angling my hand downward.
