I'm paralyzed, and this song has been somewhat of a theme song for my life. In the late fall of 2003, when I was 19 years old, I had watched the movie "A Walk to Remember" and first heard this song. It was a rough period in my life, and at that time I was still able-bodied. The previous year I had graduated as Salutatorian of my high school, and received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Wyoming, but through a series of poor choices I had partied myself out of school. Not only that, but I found myself facing felony destruction of property charges for damage that I had caused while I was drunk. That summer I went back home, started a job in the oil field, and later moved into an apartment with a friend. While my oil field job gave me a little more stability, I was still making really reckless choices. Another friend of mine, who I would drink and get high with at college, moved back home as well, and it was his dad that I was working for in the oilfield. In fact, we both started working at about the same time, and we both continued to party together. About that time I received a deferred sentence, being a first-time offender, and was put on probation for the destruction of property charge. Needless to say, while my behavior was somewhat more moderated and restricted to the weekends, my habits did not change. When I was 12 years old, I received a gospel tract on a Halloween night, and I gave my heart and life to Christ. I didn't grow up in a churched home, but my life was certainly changed. I lived a pretty responsible and law-abiding life, at least up until about my senior year in high school. Even as I was living in a riotous way, I felt like God was drawing me to Him. I started listening to Christian radio stations and going to church, but not on a consistent basis. It wasn't long after that I watched the aforementioned movie above and heard "I Dare You to Move." I certainly felt convicted by my behavior and was trying to make better choices, but without much success. It was near the last week of December when I wrote a letter to myself, castigating myself for my behavior. The previous day I had taken a lot of drugs, and after the high I was extremely disappointed in myself. In that letter I challenged God with the words, "I dare you to move." Those words came directly from this song. However, when I said those words it wasn't in a provoking antagonistic sort of way with my fist in the air. Rather, it was more of a plea of desperation; a call to God to do something with my life. Three weeks later, on January 17th, 2004, I went snow skiing with a couple of friends in the Black Hills of South Dakota. I was a pretty avid skier, being a season pass holder to one of the resorts. After skiing all day, we went to a neighboring mountain where they had night skiing. It was there that I totally misjudged my speed going off of a tabletop jump. Rather than landing on the downslope, I landed on the flat just beyond. I broke my right femur, and coming down hard on my rear end, the force of the impact compressed my spine. While several vertebrae were damaged, the L2 burst, permanently damaging my spinal cord. God certainly moved, and I thought my life was over. In a very real way, it was. I knew I would never again walk, and feared I would never get married, never have kids, never be successful, and never amount to much of anything. The next few weeks for me were certainly dark. I went into a deep depression and thought my life was over. Somehow, the pastor of a church I had previously visited heard about the accident. He drove 2 hours to the rehab hospital I was located at, and gave me the book "A Purpose Driven Life." To make a long story short, it is through that book, and the Switchfoot Album "The Beautiful Letdown," that God used to help navigate me through those dark waters. I can remember specifically listening and reading the words of "I Dare You to Move." It's like God was now speaking to me through those words. A short time before I had dared God to move, and He did. Talk about a beautiful letdown. And then in that hospital room it's as though God began to turn the words around on me, "I dare you to move." It is through this experience that I learned what it really meant to say, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." This album ministered to me in ways you'll never know. It is through this experience that I gave God my life, even though it seemed very broken and worthless. I like to tell people that God broke the back of my pride so that I could truly walk with Him spiritually, and He has restored things in a marvelous way. Nineteen years later I'm married to my the best woman in the world, and we have 5 children. I've served three terms in the Wyoming House of Representatives, and have served in the ministry in various capacities, including in the pastorate and here on KZbin. Recent ministry challenges have ushered in another dark chapter in my and my family's life, but I count it all joy to suffer with Christ. "I Dare You to Move" is still very precious to me, and challenges me yet still. Thank you for sharing this song with me and so many others.

Anybody else start humming the beginning of Redemption at the end of this? haha. You can hear the 20 years of experience in this recording - even down to Chad's snare drum run up at 3:17, and his fill at 3:40. It's like having a studio version of the energy that they bring to their live shows! See you in October in Omaha!
